I never tire of watching this video. I spoke with Pava just yesterday. She was at the Ellis booth at IBMA. Delightful lady. Rock Star.

Here's my thinking, if everybody on earth played a musical instrument or appreciated music of some sort ( mine is mandolin and mandolin music) there would be no need for wars. Good music expresses the soul of humanity. War destroys the soul and is not safe for children and all living thinks we as humans cherish in this life. Yes, we should build Mandolins -- I personally have brought three mandos into this world, and with luck and care they will be around for many, many decades after I have gone to the other side of this life. Cheers, good people. Bob in Montana

First of all let me say how your video making as far as camera angles, lighting, etc. is done extremely well. Second, I absolutely love the fact that you made a Mandolin, and I appreciate your skill and love for woodworking.

They look like great instruments. I’ve been thinking of getting back into the mandolin, I’ll have to take a look when I can afford an instrument.

Ellis mandolins are either great or greater. I've had the good fortune to play approx. 10 and all were UNBELIEVEABLE!. I hope Tom Ellis lives for 200 years because the world needs more quality instruments. Can anyone provide the background music for download? It has a great vibe especially at the beginning. Again, Thank you Tom, Pava, and crew for the works of useable art.

Damn. I purchased a kit from Stew -Mac one winter when I was convalescing from back surgery. It was just a simple A style, and it actually sounds OK, but I made a hell of a wood pile building that thing. LOL After that, I purchased an instructional DVD on how to build an F style with a carved top, and after about 30 minutes it became very clear that I was out of my realm. If I was in my 30's I might seriously try it as a vocation, but at 51, there is not enough time for me to learn on my own. If Tom was my uncle, and he was so inclined to tutor me as I built more wood piles and toxic waste dumps of varnish, nitro cellulose, and other solvents I might give it a shot, but it's not in the cards. There is a very good reason why they cost $20K and above.

Allen Donaldson -- Check out Jerry Rosa at Rosa String Works on RUclips. He builds and repairs musical instruments. He is in Missouri near Rolla and Newburg. A very entertaining bunch of videos. Lots of tips and information. Cheers, my friend. Bob in Montana

Allen, good on you for attempting to build mandos. If you feel you can't build what you want, then perhaps you should reconsider. I was 72 and 73 when I built two electric mandos from scratch and both are wonderful to see and play. Don't give up if that is your dream. Bob

Marcus Mason. Another of my favorite things to keep in mind: Always find time for the things that make you feel happy to be alive. When I am around mandolins and pickers that appreciate mandolins and music, I feel happy to be alive. The late John Denver comes to mind -- he died doing something that made him happy.

I applaud your will because I know what it takes to build one. 3 years ago I built my last two instruments, a Les Paul copy and a Gibson Snakehead Mandolin. It took months part time. These were Christmas presents for my daughter and son-in-law. Modern Asian CDC machines can make an instrument now for pennies on the dollar of what a hand built costs. When you can buy a mandolin for $200 that looks similar and plays similar to a $5,000 handmade by a master luthier, even if the tone is not quite as good, you destroy the genius of the luthier. I wish you well.
