    I've been wanting to see one of your gorgeous mamdolins being brought into this world from maple helicopter seed and pine cone to singing and barking to the masses. I'm sittin' on the edge of my chair 'cause my danged dog is sittin' behind me and won't budge.HA! Got my caramel cheetos and coffee and watching , and learning. Happy building! Kevin in NC

    It's really kind of you to share your mandolin luthier skills with us all Jerry.
    I know I am going to enjoy watching it unfold through the series.
    One thing worried me in this clip and that was your 1/4" bandsaw table appeared to be rocking about which might make an accurate cut harder and also present a safety hazard, thought I'd mention it even though I'm 3 years late to the clip.
    Thank you for posting.

    Had this playing in the background while working. I looked up while he was gluing his top pieces together, and for half a second it looked Jerry had no shirt on and had a giant tattoo of a Gibson 335 on his belly. Needless to say, I was surprised.

    Gerry, I dont know if you already knew this but when gluing up boards if the joints are really nice like you had you spread the glue on both sides and rub the two boards together the glue will acually pull the boards together & when you clamp them you should get almost zero movement. This has worked for me for 30+yrs..

    for wood that chips out a lot like that maple you should try using toothed blades in your thumb plane. That what I use building a violin and it works well on highly figured wood. Make sure your blades are razor sharp too.

    Hi Jerry, like so many others I am so excited to see the whole build of one of your amazing mandolins. You probably don't remember, but a couple of months or so ago I asked if, the next time you built a mandolin, if you could please take a little bit of extra time when you carved out your 🌹 Rose so I might get a better idea of how you carve them. If it's not too much trouble, do you think you might be able to do that? That rose is just so beautiful and I'd love to learn how to carve one. But... I understand if you are pressed for time and might not be able to. Thanks Jerry.

    I worked in a pulp and paper mill where safety was job 1!! That said, I'm going to need new teeth (from gritting them)
    ;-) by the time I finish watching this project. That missing belt would get me three days off without pay for the first incident. If I used the 20 years explanation it would get me fired. I do really enjoy watching your projects though. This kind of work has always fascinated me. I have assembled a few Fender style guitars, but I've never built one from scratch.

    Amazed you could plane the maple and not have any chip out, Ive never had such good luck! Are you using a special cutter head?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 лет назад

      Most of it has to do with the direction you're planing. Difficult to explain but you can't carve into the grain you always have to carve down the grain. This requires moving the part you're carving a lot because it's a curved surface and you have to be carving down the grain not into it. When I get down to the final detail planing I used a tooth blade. That blade will for the most part let you cut in any direction. Of course, either plain has to be very sharp. Thank you for watching.

    • @robertgoss9629
      @robertgoss9629 6 лет назад

      Looks like I phrased my question poorly, I was talking about the thickness planer, (it looks like a Grizzly).

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 лет назад

      Robert Goss yeah it's tough like you say to plane on any kind of planer on hardwood and not get some kind of tear out. Once again it does depend on which way the grain is going if you can feed it in with the knives cutting down grain you're a lot better off. Sometimes that's not possible because the grain Runs Out in different directions. Thanks for watching.

  • @jonahguitarguy
    @jonahguitarguy 7 лет назад +1

    This will be great Jerry. So can you tell me why you start out with the wedge shaped blanks when you basically mill it all off?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  7 лет назад

      Dane Nichols that is how the Sawyer cuts it out of the tree. If you picture setting the short log up on end and slicing it like a pie, that is how it is cut from the tree. By doing it that way the Rings go vertically through the top and back. And they are also book bookmatched because you can open up the two pie wedges together and the grain is exactly the same on both sides. Thank you for watching.

    • @jonahguitarguy
      @jonahguitarguy 7 лет назад +1

      That makes sense, thanks Jerry.

    Question from the peanut gallery: If the book-matched pieces are perfect before gluing (rather than infinitesimally concave), how is the wood tensioned?

  • @weldy7018
    @weldy7018 6 лет назад +1

    quick question...why do mostly all tops and backs need to be made in 2 pieces? im a metal fabricator/welder of 15ish yrs first and steered clear of woodwork but feel ive really missed out and trying to catch asap to make wood a close second to metals. lol

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 лет назад

      The top and the back are referred to as book Matched. That means that the wood was split and then rejoined therefore the green pattern is the same on both sides

  • @marisathebibliophile1519
    @marisathebibliophile1519 7 лет назад +1

    Just curious, why are the top and back made out of different woods? Is it to help be cost effective or does it make a more dynamic sound having different woods? I don't know much about wood so I'm so curious. Thanks!

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  7 лет назад +1

      marisathebibliophile almost all stringed instruments used different Woods on the back/sides compared to the top. The top is generally a soft would like Spruce or Redwood or Western Cedar. The back is always a hardwood like maple, Rosewood or some other exotic hardwood. The hardwood helps bounce the sound back out through the sound hole. The top board being softer, gives it a mellow Woody sound. Hope that helps.

    • @marisathebibliophile1519
      @marisathebibliophile1519 7 лет назад

      Rosa String Works oh nice! Yes it helps! Thanks!

  • @chrisofnottingham
    @chrisofnottingham 6 лет назад +1

    Late comment here: Does gluing two pieces together provide some physical advantage over one single piece - it seems hard to believe you can't get a piece big enough for a mandolin one-off custom job - or is it just about the pleasing visual symmetry?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 лет назад +1

      It has symmetry of sound on both sides because the wood is quarter-sawn therefore it's book Matched on both sides

    Your lines in the video are due to fluorescent lighting, not the curl in the wood.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  7 лет назад

      John Kelley I respectfully disagree. Because I don't have any fluorescent lighting in the shop at all. I can hold other things up without lines on it and I don't get the lines in the camera. It's just like when people wear fine line suits on TV you get the weird camera stuff going on. Thanks for watching.
