It's a process called Ceremorphosis. Basically? Illithids start out as tadpoles, then when they are moving to adult stage, are implanted into the head of a humanoid creature. (Usually, they slip in behind the eye or into the ear.) The tadpole devours the brain, along with all the victims thoughts, feelings, and memories, before seizing control of the body and mutating it into an adult Illithid.

I had to quit Divinity 2 because of the hacky, trope infested dialog. "You're god material but everyone talks down to you like you ain't shit!" Among other things... The combat system and all of that was smooth and fun, but god damn, I really hope they bring their A game for interesting dialog, and characters, not borderline stereotypes.
Everybody talks down to you because Sourcery is considered profane, and you may be God material but as you find out mid game that doesn't mean jack because there's been plenty of Godwoken who have come before and been failures. The main cast were interesting and I wouldn't call them tropey considering the lore of the Divinity world is pretty unique, yes Elves live in forests but it goes way beyond that. Regardless to each their own I guess. I'm very interested to see how they handle a class based system compared to a classless one. And how they handle skills out of combat.
@@Chaznar27 The dialog created paths that you knew you were supposed to take. Nothing really interesting as far as I could tell from my playthrough. So, I kill him, knowing full well I'm not "supposed to" but the game is narrow minded for the dialog tree. Where was the "Intimidate" option? No, it boils down to you either let him live or you have to kill him even though he's being a dick, suspicious, and threatening you when pressed. Now I'm the bad guy, much like I'm the bad guy for not wanting to take shit from all these characters with their cliche 'attitudes' while I'm armed to the teeth and battle-hardened. It's all silly.
