And she's this very proper and strict lady who doesn't seem to fond of Rocky (Ooooh family drama~) so I doubt it's a nickname. So yeah "Rocky's" the nickname and I mean it does fit, the guy's certainly of his rocker ;D Mordecai's name is really funny to me. No idea if it was intentional but (info's from a fanWiki article I read) Mordecai's from a family of german jewish imegrants in new York. Why does this matter? Because in addition to Mordecai being a traditionaly Jewish name the first 4 letters MORD while being a common shortening/nickname of mordecai also spell "Mord" the german word for murder!
The reason Mordecai, the black cat with glasses, hesitated to kill Ivy was because he used to work for Lackadaisy. He was close friends with Atlas and Victor, but when Atlas died and the Lackadaisy started to go down he left for a more successful gang. And since Ivy was Atlas' godfather he knew her and thus hesitated. Hence why tge rwins were worried ge would get "sentimental".
You _absolutely_ need to read the comic. It's been running since 2006, it went on hiatus for the last few years while they worked on this project, but it's planned to start up again soon now that this is done. The main story is only 178 pages so you can easily binge it in a day or three, but there are also a lot of side comics that go into details. After you read it, come back and rewatch the pilot, you'll appreciate it a lot more.

And in the comics he was attacked many of Ivy’s potential boyfriends or fellow male students (she attends college and lives in a dorm there) if he doesn’t like / trust them so seeing her with Freckle annoys him a bit
Yeah, he didn't think much of her previous boyfriends. So here, he's not sure what to make of Freckle yet. This pilot doesn't quite make it clear how new to the gang Freckle is. As Tracy has said, this follows some of the comic canon, but some things have been rearranged to make for a better intro for non-comic readers. So I guess it's more accurate to say that, *in the comic*, Freckle is brand-new to the gang (having been dragged into this by cousin Rocky), and Viktor hasn't gotten his measure yet. So Viktor is reflexively protective of Ivy and suspicious of any new beau she is paying attention to. (After all, in Viktor's opinion, her taste has been questionable so far.)

Lackadaisy started as a webcomic, and there was enough fan love and interest that a kickstarter began for an animated movie (until I suppose they decided to make an animated series). This pilot managed to squeeze in enough lore from the original webcomic without giving everything away (i.e., the story so far). There's also some semi-animated and voiced videos on the Lackadaisy youtube channel based from some of the offshoot (?) comics, they're hilarious!
Technically, the kickstarter was to make an animated *short* -- it was originally intended to be about 12 minutes. The goal was to raise $85k. They blew past that to raise over $330k, and so were able to extend the animation to nearly a half-hour. Even so, it wasn't until it actually hit RUclips that we all saw it was given the title "Lackadaisy (pilot)". I do think that the original idea of making a short, was to see if that could raise interest in funding a full animated movie. And then, given the huge success of the fund-raising, they're instead going in the direction of a series, which is a thrilling idea.
So the fact that micheal is in this is not actually a coincidence! A bunch of hazbin people worked on this pilot, including Ashley which if you don’t know was a lead animator in the hazbin and lackadaisy pilots. She is well known for creating the hunicast, a pod cast that regularly had Hazbin hotel and helluva boss VA’s. Plus she is Micheal’s girlfriend.
Everything about this just works so beautifully. The concept is really interesting, I love the setting and the animation, character designs, sound effects, and voice acting are all incredible. Rocky's my current favorite. I love how theatrical and unhinged he is. Fable Siegel and the rest of the team did an amazing job bringing this world from webcomic to webvideo. I hope it's just the first of what's to come.

Rocky and Freckle are cousins. Ivy and Freckle are dating. Serafine and Nico are siblings. Mordecai was previously working for lackadaisy and was fond of Viktor, working with him a lot of operations. Ivy is like a daughter to Viktor (hence why mordecai not shooting her, getting sentimental over Viktor). Viktor is overly protective of Ivy, and he ends up scaring away all guys she tries to get with because of thinking they're not good enough for her. This is why he seems angry at the end when she sees Ivy get so close with Freckle. Ivy is very stubborn tho and is unwilling to give a damn about what he thinks of Freckle in particular as she is very much in love with him from first sight. Mordecai is a confirmed asexual, Zib is bi, Mitzi had a husband, Wick has romantic interest in Mitzi, Rocky too to an extent but Mitzi definitely shows more interest in Wick. Freckle does indeed have some sort of personality disorder which causes him to unhinge whenever he gets the hold of a firearm. He rather dislikes that side of himself tho hence why he is so hesitant when Rocky handles him the gun. Freckle wanted to be a cop at first but he was expelled due to some kind of "accident" in the firearms department when they were training (so he does have some experience despite his age) which leads him to work with Rocky for Lackadaisy instead. Rocky however is just naturally unhinged, despite seeming composed and classy most other times.
I love things with sketch lines too. It reminds me of older Disney animations. You can actually see sketch lines a lot in 101 Dalmatians so anytime I see them anywhere else that’s what I always think of. It’s like seeing a proof of passion.
Lackadaisy just works somehow. The pacing, the characters, the overall feel to it. It's not too short but it's not too complicated or long either. It's adult themed but you rarely see any adult things going on apart from alcohol and a swear or two. The music is oddly enough catch and enjoyable. The characters feel unique and fun the same goes for the art and I can't stress this enough but I love the little cat noises and movements they make
I think you'd be happy to know that this pilot is based on a webcomic! It deviates a bit from the source material, but for now, until we wait for more, we can always check it out! I did it in one sitting and I absolutely love the art style and the humour
@@BelBelle468 Well, rather, it's hard to tell how much they're going to change the canon we know from the webcomic, for the series (if they can get it off the ground). This pilot follows a lot of canon beats, but rearranges the order of some things, and seems to soften others. The question will be, does this pilot start off its own canon for a series, that will have similarities to the comic, but not be exactly the same.
I am delighted you got to Lackadaisy and yes the comic is a delight to look up- it's very unfinished and was on hiatus for a while, I guess as they worked on the animated, but I hope it picks back up soon. And cats in Lackadaisy may have a variety of feelings about water, but Mordecai likes to remain tidy and unmussed in particular.
I absolutely loved the old school animation style coupled with the on point voice overs. The depth of the vocal inflictions added to the eye candy style of animation brought me back to the intro of episode 7 of Arcane. I got lost in the mix between the visual and audio so quick that I didn't even realize it. I may need to buy some whiskey for the next episode out of respect.
I recommend trying Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. It current has 6 mini episodes and 6 22-minute length episodes. The series can be very dark and morbid, but also funny and witty. It has a lot of unique art styles too and even somewhat hints to a homo-relation between two of the main characters.

You should check out more Indie Animated series/pilots Also got to be a Clean-Up Artists on this. Fun-Fact: The sketch lines on the character were added after the animation was cleaned, the clean-up artists could add them to the characters to make the animation feel like a Disney film from the 60s/70s

It's based off a webcomic of the same name. It starts off in sepia tones (if I recall correctly) but it does start getting color. It took a long time between releases bc it's so detailed. It's absolutely beautiful and I need more show of it lol
Viktor and Ivy have a sort of father and daughter type of relationship in the comics so when he scratched at the wood it was him sort of being overprotective over her with Freckle
Rocky and Freckle are Irish... Thus the anger issues. (I am Irish) Rocky specifically has brain damage from getting his head split by a car. That is why he sees the world crazy now. Freckle has split personalities. One shy, quiet, kind. The other is Rambo.
Another series for you if you see this, Murder Drones is a series I’d recommend. With all the mystery behind it, four episodes already released, it’s increasing popularity, and absolutely lovable characters, I feel like you’d enjoy reacting to it! I’ve watched the Pilot I don’t know how many time and I think I added about 100 views because this animation is just….MWAH Chef’s Kiss! Also it only took the Lackadaisy Pilot to help discover the Webcomic and I wanted to slap my past self for not knowing about Lackadaisy!!!!
Very much appreciated how they put a warning for gun violence. It’s really hard for me to hear gunshots without getting triggered (no pun intended) and I don’t see warnings for them very often. But man do I adore the art style and characters! 100% agreed, I love ‘old’ style 2D animation. I’d love to see where this series goes (while minding the volume) because it seems awesome. :)
So looking forward to more of this show. It is beautifully animated, with just a hint of the original lines showing through. Really fun time period. LOVE the characters so much already. Plus we get more Michael Kovach (Moxxie) with Rocky. Really hope this show gets to grow and expand as it deserves.
One thing I love about this pilot is how they show Mordecai is a great shot from before he actually takes his first shot. The slowing aiming animation, the ticking, and especially the face of his target reflecting in his glasses gives a clear indication of how lucky they were to escape

i read this when it was webtoon when i was a wee lad. Haven't read it in years and years but i definetly remembered some details about the character (Rocky and freckle being cousins, The flapper lady's mans is dead, the doctor looking cat hes evil hes like gwalter gwite, freckle's bloodlust), also his love for waffles???? idk he's my fave my desktop background was a picture of him with waffles for five years straight when i was a kid) little things that made my inner child smile. I've always loved tracy's work, but i feel like the episode needed to be longer because i too was sucked in

That would typically mean they hail from really southern Louisiana, as in New Orleans or further south. It's also worth noting that St. Louis did - and still does - have a lot of influence come up along the river. As an LA ex-pat living in St. Louis myself, I'm always surprised at the amount of LSU fandom I see up here.

I was expecting a reaction towards that being Wick's quarry. They drive through the sign with his last name when they enter the quarry, and then Rocky basically gives it away with calling him "MR. Sable"
LOVED Lackadaisy (The comic) and was SO amazed by the "Pilot". I hope it gets picked up as well. But if you want more storyline without necessarily reading years worth of (VERY GOOD) webcomic, the page has some mini comics that are semi-animated and have the Pilot's voice cast. You could maybe do a reaction and compilation for those? They dive into some of the older lore.
I like the unfinished sketch look too. I think what they’re trying to do is Harkin back to some of those Disney cartoons in the 60s right after the Xerox method was invented. It transferred the picture right from the pencil drawings onto the celluloid, caused a lot of layoffs in the Ink and Paint department, and made the animation process a lot more efficient. The animators loved it, because they felt like more of their original work showed through, rather than going through another set of hands. What it led to was a lot of moments where the pencil details showed through, such as unfinished cleanup and sketchy bits of hair and wrinkled skin. They found ways to embrace this as part of the art form. Of course, the Xerox method is no longer used, and it’s cake to take care of the cleanup. But I think they let more of it shows through in this piece to give it that old-time sketchy look. The first Disney movie to use the Xerox method was 101 Dalmatians.

As a St. Louis native who went to school with the descendants of some actual bootleggers of the period, when reading the comic it's interesting to see which parts are carefully-researched bits of real history and which are invented for the story.

I read the entire comic in about 3-4 hours. I started it in the evening, went to sleep, and continued in the morning until getting to the final page.

I love things with sketch lines too. It reminds me of older Disney animations. You can actually see sketch lines a lot in 101 Dalmatians so anytime I see them anywhere else that’s what I always think of. It’s like seeing a proof of passion.
I'm 15 and when I see those lines I get nostalgic.
Lackadaisy just works somehow. The pacing, the characters, the overall feel to it. It's not too short but it's not too complicated or long either. It's adult themed but you rarely see any adult things going on apart from alcohol and a swear or two. The music is oddly enough catch and enjoyable. The characters feel unique and fun the same goes for the art and I can't stress this enough but I love the little cat noises and movements they make
I think you'd be happy to know that this pilot is based on a webcomic! It deviates a bit from the source material, but for now, until we wait for more, we can always check it out! I did it in one sitting and I absolutely love the art style and the humour
I wouldn’t say it deviates as this is supposed to not be canon, but exist as pilot (which means fitting in as much stuff as possible).
@@BelBelle468 Well, rather, it's hard to tell how much they're going to change the canon we know from the webcomic, for the series (if they can get it off the ground). This pilot follows a lot of canon beats, but rearranges the order of some things, and seems to soften others. The question will be, does this pilot start off its own canon for a series, that will have similarities to the comic, but not be exactly the same.
You should absolutely read the comic! And, since you didn’t catch it, it was Wick Sable (the businessman cat) whose quarry the fight destroyed
some shows you can feel when they've hooked you. Lackadaisy has a subtle hook, where you don't even realize you're hooked until it's over
I am delighted you got to Lackadaisy and yes the comic is a delight to look up- it's very unfinished and was on hiatus for a while, I guess as they worked on the animated, but I hope it picks back up soon.
And cats in Lackadaisy may have a variety of feelings about water, but Mordecai likes to remain tidy and unmussed in particular.
I absolutely loved the old school animation style coupled with the on point voice overs. The depth of the vocal inflictions added to the eye candy style of animation brought me back to the intro of episode 7 of Arcane. I got lost in the mix between the visual and audio so quick that I didn't even realize it. I may need to buy some whiskey for the next episode out of respect.
I also thought that being savage mode runs in Rocky and Freckles family. And I'm here for it.
I recommend trying Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. It current has 6 mini episodes and 6 22-minute length episodes. The series can be very dark and morbid, but also funny and witty. It has a lot of unique art styles too and even somewhat hints to a homo-relation between two of the main characters.
Viktor (the bartender) sees Miss Pepper as a daughter so he gets very protective when she’s shows interest in someone

Fun-Fact: The sketch lines on the character were added after the animation was cleaned, the clean-up artists could add them to the characters to make the animation feel like a Disney film from the 60s/70s

It's based off a webcomic of the same name. It starts off in sepia tones (if I recall correctly) but it does start getting color. It took a long time between releases bc it's so detailed. It's absolutely beautiful and I need more show of it lol
The quarry was called sable quarry… the blue eyed dapper gentleman is called mr sable, hence he was concerned when they mentioned dynamite

Very much appreciated how they put a warning for gun violence. It’s really hard for me to hear gunshots without getting triggered (no pun intended) and I don’t see warnings for them very often. But man do I adore the art style and characters!

One thing I love about this pilot is how they show Mordecai is a great shot from before he actually takes his first shot. The slowing aiming animation, the ticking, and especially the face of his target reflecting in his glasses gives a clear indication of how lucky they were to escape
All I can think of whenever I see Rocky is that squirrel from Over the Hedge, especially with the twitching as he’s exploring

i read this when it was webtoon when i was a wee lad. Haven't read it in years and years but i definetly remembered some details about the character (Rocky and freckle being cousins, The flapper lady's mans is dead, the doctor looking cat hes evil hes like gwalter gwite, freckle's bloodlust), also his love for waffles???? idk he's my fave my desktop background was a picture of him with waffles for five years straight when i was a kid) little things that made my inner child smile. I've always loved tracy's work, but i feel like the episode needed to be longer because i too was sucked in

@@tsubaki4106 (Bit on the late side here, sorry) but yes, those two have pretty classic Cajun accents. That would typically mean they hail from really southern Louisiana, as in New Orleans or further south.
It's also worth noting that St. Louis did - and still does - have a lot of influence come up along the river. As an LA ex-pat living in St. Louis myself, I'm always surprised at the amount of LSU fandom I see up here.

LOVED Lackadaisy (The comic) and was SO amazed by the "Pilot". I hope it gets picked up as well.
But if you want more storyline without necessarily reading years worth of (VERY GOOD) webcomic, the page has some mini comics that are semi-animated and have the Pilot's voice cast. You could maybe do a reaction and compilation for those? They dive into some of the older lore.
I like the unfinished sketch look too. I think what they’re trying to do is Harkin back to some of those Disney cartoons in the 60s right after the Xerox method was invented. It transferred the picture right from the pencil drawings onto the celluloid, caused a lot of layoffs in the Ink and Paint department, and made the animation process a lot more efficient. The animators loved it, because they felt like more of their original work showed through, rather than going through another set of hands. What it led to was a lot of moments where the pencil details showed through, such as unfinished cleanup and sketchy bits of hair and wrinkled skin. They found ways to embrace this as part of the art form. Of course, the Xerox method is no longer used, and it’s cake to take care of the cleanup. But I think they let more of it shows through in this piece to give it that old-time sketchy look. The first Disney movie to use the Xerox method was 101 Dalmatians.

As a St. Louis native who went to school with the descendants of some actual bootleggers of the period, when reading the comic it's interesting to see which parts are carefully-researched bits of real history and which are invented for the story.
I feel like lackadaisy and hazbin hotel are gonna dominate the field when they become actual shows!
