  • On September 22, 1943, Lucy Byard, a black Seventh-day Adventist woman, was refused treatment at an Adventist hospital due to her race. Since that day, the major details of the event have been subject to the whim of the teller, and variant versions have become embedded in church lore.
Dr. Benjamin Baker reconstructs this pivotal event using primary sources to tell the real story. His writings on it can be found on these sites:

The ungodly principle of MONEY before PEOPLE was practiced long before today's times. Hmm. Granted, financing is important but in my humble opinion, among brothers and sisters in the HOUSEHOLD of FAITH this sort of thing should not happen. There's enough finances among us to meet the needs of God's children, EVERYWHERE. No differences in color, social status, education or anything is pleasing to God and any truly Christian Brother or Sister.
Even now, I can't wrap my mind around the idea of the sick in poverty-stricken countries outside of the USA, Europe, and other wealthy countries around the world being turned away from medical treatment because they can't pay for physician's visit or their big Farma drugs. Might our move away from the SANITARIUM model of treating the sick have anything to do with this situation? And the hardening of our hearts as modern Laodiceans? After all, can we take the money with us? And are we going to enter heaven with hard hearts, tight fists and evil minds?

    This truth still exists today.
Why , I've always asked myself is the Seventh-day Adventist Church ,composed of a majority of rich white people?
I was raised in East Harlem,NEW York and attended the Spanish Manhattan SDA Church on 123rd St.,just a few blocks East of Ephesus Black SDA
Church and wondered to myself why is there an Hispanic & a Black Church & sooo many white SDA'S as opposed to members of color?
The only time I was privileged was when an Argentine pastor asked my mother could I be allowed to live with he and his wife and blond-blue-eyed baby, because he acknowledged my interest in the Bible & as a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, he could offer me a SDA Education,to which my mother consented and I don't recall a happier time in my life. My doctor was Seventh-day Adventist, all my friends at school, well we were more like a family. It didn't matter that my teacher was white, because as she said ,"We were ALL HER children. " It was the early 70's. But I came home it was different. To me he was the father any little girl could up to literally (6'5") & he truly loved me & I loved the fact that he was such a wonderful teacher, but his wife was a different story. She was German and treated me like her maid. I was 11+ and she'd spoiled her son and he was too heavy for me to carry all over, so I asked Dad was I supposed to carry this big baby who cried all the time ?
    I don't know what happened
But the next thing I know, I'm off to boarding school which I loved more- in the country with all my Seventh-day Adventist friends, rich, poor, black, white...a family of 168 students, but the staff all white; monitors-all white.
I want to research the TESTIMONIES TO THE CHURCH, because due to her facial features and shade ,for the longest I thought Sister Ellen White was Black...
It is shameful that what happened to Sister Lucy Byard is still the case .
I'm much older now and am at the mercy of today's parma-medicine. And I would love to go to a Seventh-day Adventist Sanitarium but I have no way of paying the Bill.
COVID-19 's situation has left me in great sorrow and much betrayal at the hands of both Black & White & et al so-called SDA'S. THE love of money is the root of all evil .
I needed surgery to see if I had cancer . The one sister I thought I could depend on wouldn't take a few hrs to come get me after recovery.
COVID-19 changed many people. Except for JESUS, I am all alone. I have many stories of how my own kind, White's, Blacks let me down.
I NEED to PRAY now more than ever.

I too have horrendous experiences from white Germans, cold as steel, abusive, cruel, extremely prejudiced. Heartbreaking to love them, it kills you to love them.

Tears. Horrifying. Dead cold hearts -- no agape love. While blacks have suffered publically, horrifyingly so, white SDAs who are not from white wealthy SDA medical families are similarly prejudiced against & who suffer privately, treated without compassion, coldly dismissed, ignored. Too many members have left the SDA people/church organization to find God's compassionate love in solitude, because. more often than not, the (or any) church is not safe anymore. For blacks, whites, Latinos, children, women. No one stands up for anyone or protects. It's like the administration on down to the pulpit is thus NEUTERED. Indifferent. Dismissive. Unfeeling. Laodicea are we, et al...
