  • Subscribe to Chiaki at / @imsenmusic . I had a great time collaborating with my friend Chiaki on this video about the weird Fostex FD-4! This is such a weird beast of a recorder. It was one of the earliest digital 4 tracks and came out at a time when Cassettes still ruled the home recording world. We put it to the test and recorded a fun song. I remember Zip disks! I had a drive in my first desktop computer (a Compaq!) with a 250MB disk and thought, "Man, I'll NEVER fill this!" Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Great video, good to see that my JAZ-drive is making normal sounds.
I bought one of these in 1998* and recorded an entire (industrial/doom metal) album on it in 2000**, and used it live for years as a sample player and click track.
Just this week I have started using it again.
For me it has the advantage of not distracting me with all the bells and whistles of a DAW, so I focus on the song I am writing.
    * I actually read the manual back then, which made getting back up to speed again very easy.
** On some of the quieter parts, I can hear the hum of the ZIP-drive.

@@demonicsweaters not officially, as far as I know. (Artist: B-LOW, Album: Demotivation Remake 2B)
But I think somebody has uploaded some tracks.
If I find them, I will post links below.

That looks very ...... 1998. Sidenote - that microkorg has been on my "shopping list" for a while now.

Your fostex don't have the headphones monitor out ?
maybe those older ones don't have them .
I really wanted the model you got ,
unfortunately I could only find the mr -8 on eBay for a good price.
Not bad , got mine for 40.00 .
mostly gonna use it so I don't have to make full sequensing patterns to switch up
    in the daw .
I just hate spending hours doing everything all in the daw , and then
having to full sequence everything , he'll no .

I almost brought one of these.. I had 4 track tape recorders back in the day.... always they thought sounded crap at the time. I thought if I went digital I'd have studio quality. The weird thing is that when I come across any old tapes I thought were crap at the time... they sound really, really good. I just jumped from tape, to computer, bypassing the digital 4 track thing.

I had one of these with the SyQuest EZ Flyer 230 drive.

haha, awesome, was that like a tape drive type thing?

@@demonicsweaters - not tape. more of a SCSI drive. higher speed and more density than the 100mb zip drive common at the time. I think zip came out with a 200mb drive later that had a short life in the computer market.

interestingly...and i had one of those....they also sold an optional Syquest 240MB drive instead of the zip drive...buncha more money. problem was that everytime you set it to record it would lock out the channel....a glitch that had to get fixed. Don't remember what they fix was but they wanted money. SCSI back then was great to work with on computers...not so much on audio gear. Here is the bigger gotcha though. the FD4 could have an internal SCSI drive installed but they wanted to charge you a buttload of money for both the drive (as if one could not buy one elsewhere) and have you pay to send the FD4 back to fostex to have it installed. The reason, they had the h/w setup to allow the internal drive but didn't solder down a connector and cable internally so users could not (without skill and deeper knowledge of such things) install their own drives. Imagine being able to install a 400MB SCSI drive internally on this device....endless space at that time. Also very quick access as it would have been 16bit ultra scsi at least...if I recall correctly....unless they just put the cheapest 8 bit controller in the thing. I gave my FD4 away. useless junk. kept it for at least 6 years hoping to be able to afford to get it upgraded I think. thinking back on it I should have just gotten the zip drive as at least the thing might have been useful. hindsight. good video guys!
