I think it was also a strategy by SRH to announce retention early. Since they got to pay klansen such a hug amount, and after knowing this every top player will negotiate more money from their teams knowing klansen is getting 23 cr. SRH thinking if we had to pay 23 cr lets put others team in the same page. Very smart move..!

Now Klassen has got an opportunity to prove his worth because SRH will have an inexperienced Indian core as SRH try to build a squad with 40 crores. So with 40 crores, SRH are going the RCB 2014 strategy where Head, Klassen, Abhishek, Cummins, Nitish are your Gayle, AB, Kohli, Starc & Yuvi & that didn't end up well. To build a squad of 23 especially considering others will have 100 & 70 instead, will be tough.
In a proper bidding war, I doubt two teams would have taken his auction price above 16, max 18 which is the 1st retention amount, but with new RTM rules, any franchise can force the former team to pay any amount.
I feel (LSG &DSG in SA20) might have told him that they would like to sign him due to the global franchise brand and would bid around that amount for in the mega auction (with new RTM rules) & SRH felt better to keep him happy & value his services. Other owners may have thought the same, but 23 is way too much for them to take that gamble. LSG can with SA20 link & we saw them overspending with Stokes move in 2017.
That's the only explanation for 23
My point is if I'm paying 23 out of 120 crores for a middle order batsman who is striking 200 and averaging 50, what does it leave me with at the mega auction table. I have Cummins, Klassen & Abhishek at 55 crores.
Assuming Head agrees for 14 & Nitish for 11, it is 80 crores for 5 players.
SRH lineup looks like:
1) Head
Abhishek
4) Nitish
Klassen
7) Cummins
I have 4 batsmen & maybe 8 overs in place. I need another 12 overs with one overseas slot available
Hyderabad despite batting aggressive ended up with net run rate of +0.414 with a much better squad than they going to build in 2025, just because their bowlers in Bhuvi, Natarajan, Cummins, Shahbaz, Unadkat. . . conceded as much as their batsmen scored
If other teams sign a player for more than 18 crores, there is no case to discuss because its a relative field.
The concern for example is LSG is rumored to retain Pooran & Stoinis at 14 & 11 while SRH paid Klaasen 23 crores.
It is wise for teams like KKR, RR to do 5 retentions rather than using the RTM game as they have really good squads. You don't want to be like RCB losing out KL Rahul in 2018 (whom they didn't RTM for 11 crores against 3rd retention amount of 7 crores) or RCB in 2022 overspending 10 crores each on Harshal & Hasaranga instead of retaining them for 6 crores

One other element that may have played a role in the higher retention at 23 instead of RTM, it lets them use the overall 75 to also secure Head and Reddy without worrying about how high they could go in the auction as well. If it is that the total is 75 then we could see them at something like 12 and 8 respectively which is reasonable. So maybe only a slight premium for keeping a strong core together

He's the top 3 t20 batters in the world in the last 2 years, he has scored 900 runs at almost 175 in the last 2 seasons, plus he's a keeper and an overseas player who plays spin very well, espn in another video told klaasen was being contacted by other teams for around 20, that's why srh had to go to 23

If you say if we retain 4 players it means 18+14+11+18= 61 crs we will still have 59 crs
So if we get one sharp bowler for 12 crs it means 47 crs left we have 4 good batsmen klassen, Abhishek, nitish, patcummins and 2 good bowlers patcummins, and one you get in auction we filled 5 places we can samad or mayank for bace price around 2 crs if needed which fills 6 places till now and our purse value 45 crs we can get a good middle order spin combo for less than 20 crs so 8 places 25 crs purse value so we can get one opening partner for 7 crs so 9 places filled and 18 crs left we will focus on uncapped and other players like natrajan for near to base prices or less than around 3 crs so 10 filled , 15 crs left we can get very good young talents with almost 3 to 4 crs or even less just like nitish kumar in last auction we can easily manage well and with 15 crs youncan easily get around 7 to 8 players but yes the scouts should do long hard work for young talents so overall you can get around 18 to 19 player squad ready
This is only a rough estimation as its a mega auction even prices may drop who knows all teams have limited purse to get full squad so players will go for less prices than usual for sure

What if SRH had only limited budget when Klaasen’s name came up in auction? They will lose him, that’s what happened to KKR in Rahul tripathi’s case
From SRH's example now that we know that the budget cut from auction can be adjusted and distributed anyway franchise likes to different players.
So, I think Punjab Kings should consider retaining Arshdeep and certainly retain Shashank along with another uncapped player. If Shashank demands more than 4 crore suppose 7-9 crores, give 12-14 crs to Arshdeep , and 4-5 crores to other uncapped players from the 26 crore budget that will get cut from their budget in the auction.

In SRH’s scenario, they have decided to give Klaasen(23), Pat(18) and Abhisek(14) total of 55. They will be left with 20cr and most likely they would get head for 13cr and nk reddy for 7cr i guess

There are enough talent in this country if provided with opportunity and enough money can make better players than klassen, you need a talent scout, talent investment and talent retainment. You will find their national talent always paid more than the foreign talent... if the league has to be stronger or better for future. There will always be one messi or one bumrah or one Nikolai Jokic who is above all world talents. Sorry I dont think Klassen is that one player now... He is in the top performer but he is not the only destrutive left hand batter in the world. Rinku singh came from this country who could PAR him just for same skill set in 20 Lakhs for last 3 years... and I'm sure Rinku singh will never get 23 crores in IPL or not even half of it in this Year IPL . I am ok for foreign talent if it involves other minor country players like ireland, scotland, namibia also get a look in as well. KLASSEN will make money from SA league/CPL as well.. can BUMRAH make the money from other league... then why call it IPL... change it to NPL or Global Premier League. They’ll fail terribly this season. They should have saved some purse for getting good Indian players. They are looking at almost 80-85 cr gone from their purse. Very difficult to build a starting 11 where they still need one good spinner, one backup seamer and two quality Indian seamer, along with middle and lower order Indian batsman
