      @fightthepowerman 3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, it feels like trusting people to ignore the incentives that go along with power to act for the greater good is a poor way to run a political system. We have a similar thing in the UK where many roles basically have the power to impede democracy and cause constitutional crysies, and the 1 protection we have is convention. Why is this just built-in? For instance, the king technically has the power to deny the PM an election. The queen even enacted said power in the 1970s. Lords (of the House of Lords, our equivalent to the Senate) are appointed by the PM in the same way SCOTUS judges are appointed for life by the president. I don't really understand how these mechanisms aren't obvious safeguards _against_ democracy.

    I will also add that I am African-American, and I would NEVER vote for Harris. Too many African-American leaders are trying to frame this situation as one where it will be seen as racist if Harris is not the replacement, but I don't think these voices actually speak for the majority of African-Americans. Kamala is loved by black elites (who many of us despise), Howard university grads, members of the AKA sorority, and a few others who attended HBCUs, but this is a small minority within the African-American community. The rest of us are keenly aware and resentful of hr history of getting black men unfairly or disproportionately incarcerated in California, and she's very disliked among many African-Americans for that very reason. To us, it made perfect sense that Biden (who we also see as racist because of his voting history and dehumanizing of Palestinians) chose her as VP. A lot of people questioned having geriatric runners in this and last election. The past several years you could actually see age catching up to Biden.. I even questioned myself for maybe being to harsh on Joe. I had mentioned his diminishing capacity.. Then had some doubt on his condition. But the past few months it has shown up a few times. This spiral down has sped up. Even his physical appearance looks bad. It does not look good when he shuffles on to the stage like a skit from the Carol Burnett Show. (Tim Conway)

    The notion of VP being the backup or 2nd string POTUS is a shaky assumption. They're not elected directly, they get appointed to a ticket and are widely not considered to be a difference maker election wise.
    Just consider Tim Kaine's role in the Democratic party, Mike Pence, John Edwards, Sarah Palin, etc. For every Al Gore or Joe Biden you have VPs who aren't heir apparents so to me it's not crazy to look past Kamala Harris.

    The solution is simple: Biden bows out and endorses Kamala and throws her his delegates. (Has to be Kamala and done that way or the internal fighting would be harmful.) Obama and others jump on board. The convention goes beautifully. Kamala gains ground in the polls, as people become more familiar with her and, also, she is a much better speaker now than she used to be. She has a better chance of winning in Nov., against Trump than Biden.

      Lol not how they do things in the US. There, they cling to power until they die. I'm surprised Mitch McConnell decided to retire after only 237 years in office. Diane Feinstein died in office. Ruth Bader Ginsburg died in her position too.

    Will dems lose black voters if they pass on Kamala? Probably. Will trump gain racist/sexist voters if they go with Kamala? Probably. Based case scenario is keeping Joe as the candidate, even though I might even prefer Kamala. I think his debate performance is overblown

    Harris should NOT be the standard bearer bc she's a terrible candidate. Initially, in 2016, I was for Kamala. Until i saw her perform and she was AWFUL. I'll grant that she's improved since then, but she's too big of a risk to go against Chetoh Mussolini.
