Somehow managed to get caught on a table and shatter everything on it whilst trying to out run the cook? Doesn't matter Daphne is getting married. Oh how beautiful it was to get to see her siblings grow up and watch their stories unfold. Isabella would sneak into Daphne's room and let her speak about her troubles, whether Izzy understood them or not. Collin and Benedict just got home drunk screaming up a storm, yet no one would be able to tell you who was making the noise because somehow the doors had all jammed closed. Had a go - my idea is to use the song titles as the theme for the chapters. I’ve only done the first chapter. It was getting rather longer. - Nothing Holding Me Back - Iris Bridgerton, the younger twin to Hyacinth St. Clair née Bridgerton, was fed up of waiting. It had been nearly three months. She had begged her mama to let them marry early but her mother remained firm; after all, Iris would her last child to get married - how could they rush? Well, Iris had other thoughts. She was not going to let her mama’s opinions hold her back. She planned to speak with Charles at the Hastings ball this eve. “Ah, sister!” Her eldest sister, Daphne, beamed at her. After her rendezvous with the dashing gentleman like the young Earl, the budding flower shook herself into bloom. It is said that wallflowers of the season spoke in hush tones of how quiver and flush Miss Dahlia Mayshire's appearance was during the ball. The soon-to-be groom's absence, Mister Hawkins-Smythe, was a thunderclap in the midst of the announcement. The guests, their anticipation palpable, were left in utter disbelief. Had a go - my idea is to use the song titles as the theme for the chapters. I’ve only done the first chapter. It was getting rather longer.
- Nothing Holding Me Back -
Iris Bridgerton, the younger twin to Hyacinth St. Clair née Bridgerton, was fed up of waiting.
She had been engaged to Charles Cowper for nearly the entire season and she was nearly at the end of her patience.
Her mother, the Dowager Viscountess Violet Bridgerton, had insisted that she and Charles wait till the end of the current season before they would marry and return to their county homes. It had been nearly three months. She had begged her mama to let them marry early but her mother remained firm; after all, Iris would her last child to get married - how could they rush?
Well, Iris had other thoughts. She was not going to let her mama’s opinions hold her back. She planned to speak with Charles at the Hastings ball this eve.
“Ah, sister!” Her eldest sister, Daphne, beamed at her. She had her hand tucked into her husband’s elbow and her exuberance made Simon smile. “Mama tells me your gentleman, Mr. Cowper, has proposed!” She smiled conspiratorially and whispered. “Well done.”
“They were betrothed since the womb, Daphne. What else would you expect?” Hyacinth responded with snark.
Iris groaned. She would have hoped marriage would have tamed Hyacinth a bit but alas, she had not been fortunate. Her elder twin sister had become more rambunctious, if anything, since her nuptials.
Hyacinth had been the bolder of the twins. She fought constantly with Gregory, their fourth brother, so much so that much of the ton assumed they were the twins. In contrast to her siblings, with the exception of Francesca, Iris was demure and introverted. She loved her family as large and boisterous as they were. As the youngest, she looked up to all of her siblings and their partners, even Hyacinth, for they had enviable love matches.
She liked Mr. Cowper quite a lot. He was kind and listened to her. They were barely out of leading strings when they became friends and that nurtured a quiet adoration which Iris was glad to finally have after seeing her siblings marry and live their happily ever after endings.
Her second sister, Eloise, frowned. “I must confess, when he did not honour your betrothal with a proposal during your first two seasons, I had thought he meant to cry off.” Seeing Iris’ look of hurt, she quickly added, “but of course, he did not.”
At Daphne’s admonishing expression, Eloise quickly swallowed her glass of lemonade and grabbed her stepdaughter’s hand. “Pardon us, sisters, I think Amanda requires….”
She trailed off and quickly made her escape, dragging poor Amanda behind here.
“On that note,” Iris sighed. “I am going to find the gentleman in question. Excuse me a moment.”
As Eloise had tactfully said, Charles had failed to propose her first two seasons out in society. He had implored her understanding - as his father’s heir, he had a duty to manage their affairs and make their business connections. Charles had wanted to improve their social standing before marrying Iris and ensure that he could keep her in comfort. With such sound logic, how could Iris have ever argued?
She bided her time and waited patiently. True to his word, he did propose during her third season.
However, this enduring wait had to end. Iris was firm. She was going to speak with Charles and nothing was going to hold them back from getting married.
Nothing.
