  • When we talk about the midline, we mean an imaginary line that bisects the body from head to foot. An informal study carried out by one of The Little Gym teams in the UK found that 5 out of 7 children aged 3-4, from a sample of approximately 100, struggled to cross the midline without teacher assistance at the beginning of term.
It’s a shocking trend that backed up by comments from educators and childcare experts also witnessing a rise in young children struggling to cross their midline. Handwriting is suffering in school, children are delayed in learning self-care like brushing their teeth, tying their laces, dressing and toileting, and many are even struggling to sit cross-legged in class.
Crossing the midline takes more than just running around. It takes practice, a lot of practice starting as young as possible. Our gymnastics and child development classes at The Little Gym can gauge how children are progressing with crossing the midline, and whether they need a bit of extra help to develop this critical area of development.
