German can sound harsh and rather guttural--to the untrained ear. Someone who's been learning the language, or has been around people who speak it will begin to hear the subtle things in the language that make it beautiful. Like the rolling of an 'r,' or the odd ö sound. I love this language like I love the people who speak it, and Stille Nacht is just another example of how fundamentally wonderful the language is. I only listen to this when I want to hear Silent Night. Never the English version

German sounds guttural if your only experience of German is when extras in a WW2 movie battle scene are yelling orders. If all you heard of English was people shouting "Take over!" "MOVE MOVE MOVE!" you'd think English would give you a hoarse throat.

It was winter of 1914, the war was supposed to be over by now. The British and German trench wars were calmer around this time due to them waiting out the winter. The two sides ate lunch at the same time too so there was already a daily ceasefire. When patrol officers wondered into no man’s land they would often see the other sides officers as well. Neither side would fire a bullet at each other because it was a tiresome and stressful time of the year. Many soldiers were frightened and thought they would be spending their first Christmas alone. It was miserable due to all the snow and cold weather. As a result of this trenches were collapsing with men inside killing them. They sat on the benches all day because the ground was soaking wet. The British generals saw that the patrol officers ceased fire when seeing another officer so they commanded a British raid towards the German trench. This resulted in heavy casualties on the British side. Then a miracle happened, on December 24th, Christmas Eve. It stopped snowing and the trench grounds became solidified making it safe to walk on. The British heard the German soldiers singing “Stille Nacht” the British wanted to out do them with their singing. After a little bit they came to a harmony singing together. Christmas gifts were sent to the soldiers from each side the British soldiers received 1000 extra cigarettes from the queen and the Germans got chocolate and salami. Of course both sides were given gifts from their families. Winter clothing was given to both sides from their families. On Christmas Eve night the Germans put up small trees with lights on them. Then Christmas Day came, at around 6:00 AM German soldiers started walking into no man’s land, of course this was frightening for both sides. Soon the British saw that the Germans were unarmed and began to talk to each other. By 10:00 AM soldiers from both sides were outside on no man’s land. They were enjoying their day but it was hard to with their dead soldiers on the ground. Both sides Barrie’s their dead to keep peace between the two sides. At one point both sides remained in their trenches in order to let a French church mass take place. After it was over a solo was played by a French singer. Gifts were exchanged between the two sides. Winter clothing, chocolate, cigarettes, salami, barrels of beer. At the end of the day a general from both sides saluted each other and fired revolvers in the air signaling the war being back on.

the Christmas of 1914 is my favorite Christmas story. A german soldier sang this song. A ceasefire had already been called, but then the English and the french joined in the singing. The next thing that happened was so beautiful. The german singer walked out of the trenches onto no mans land. Slowly, one by one, both sides met in the middle. They played football, drank, and ate chocolate. Before the sun rose, the German sang the song again. But the German singer died the next day.

Born in Scotland, at primary school at the grand old age of 7 (1961) I joined our primary school choir. The first Christmas carol I learned to sing was 'Silent Night' and we had to sing it in German - hence 'Stille Nacht'. The Headmaster had invited a friend who was German to teach us to sing it. It was part of a post-war reparation at the time. When we sang it as a choir, everyone enjoyed it. Have never forgotten the words....60+ years on.

When I was in high school, all of the language classes went to the nursing home and we sang carols in our languages. I was in German, and after we had preformed we were requested to sing once more. There was an old lady there who was from Germany who asked if we would sing her “Silent Night” once more. So we gathered around her and sang her “Silent Night” once again as tears streamed down her face in happiness. I was so happy to be apart of that moment.

In 1818 the carol "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht" was heard for the first time in a village church in Oberndorf, Austria. The congregation Midnight Mass in St. Nicholas Church listened as the voices of the assistant pastor, and the choir director. On each of the six verses, the choir repeated the last two lines in four-part harmony. On that Christmas Eve, a song was born that would wing its way into the hearts of people throughout the world. Now translated into hundreds of languages

This is a very pretty version because it's so close to the original composition. In modern practice it's slowed down with plenty of rubato, but it should be sung at about this speed or a little faster, and in strict time. The music is straight from Austrian folk-style: it's called a "landler", which is the ancestor to the waltz. We moderns slow it down and sing it with lots of feeling, but when sung according to original intention it speaks straight to the heart.
    So pretty. So lovely.

@Nuttee History They speak a dialect very similar to Bavarian German there. Austria could have been a part of Germany, but never joined the Prussian Confederation and fought against the German Confederation in the Austro-Prussian War. The North German Confederation won and then went on to fight in the Franco-Prussian War against France. The North German Confederation was victorious and took the French region of Alsace-Lorraine as their prize. After the war, in 1871, the North German Confederation formed a complete country with all of the kingdoms and republics that were a part of it. They formed the German Empire or the Second Reich. The head of state would be the Kaiser (Emperor), which was also the King of Prussia.

To me, even in its simplicity, Stille Nacht is one the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful carols of all time. Maybe THE most. Somehow, I wound up here in early May, seeking some kind of solace for the pain of seeing my beautiful wife of fifty years slowly inexorably fading away, to die some day hence. I can't tell if my tears hearing this song were for my wife's cruel fate or just because the words and the singer's nearly perfect voice lifted my soul. Why not? For both. Stille Nacht.
