      That's because Elite Squadron WAS Battlefront 3. It was meant to be the cut down PSP version of Battlefront 3 alongside a cancelled PS2 version. This becomes even more clear because beta versions of the game are identical to the final product other than the title being Battlefront 3. There are some videos of beta versions of Elite Squadron on You Tube

    Now that I see the concepts of having 3 different battles happening simultaneously, it begs the question why the new one didn't have a game mode like this. Sure, Walker Assault is fun. But the idea of having a ground battle, space battle, and ship invasion all going on at once that could have influenced each other would have been AMAZING! Also, the idea that you could switch between the 3 would have been awesome and really a fun concept.

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  8 лет назад +11

      +BoltSpeedGamer This was the response of many fans who'd been following the various leaks of info on Free Radical's Battlefront III. What makes it hurt even worse is that according to former developers on the project, the tech they came up with for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was revolutionary in how it pulled off a full simultaneous battle without loading screens.
      At best, I think they may be trying to emulate Lucas Arts' own plan to try and reboot Battlefront. Lucas Arts was going to release Star Wars: First Assault as an XBLA/PSN/Steam budget title to gauge audience interest in their new direction, and then follow it up with their own take on Battlefront. This was all cancelled when Disney acquired Lucas Film and its subsidiaries.
      If that's the case, then maybe the next Battlefront will actually be worth it, and DICE will iterate based on the general feedback they've received. Unfortunately, it seems more likely that they genuinely thought something like this would be too complex for their audience. I really hope it's the former and not the latter.

    • @UnabridgedGamer

      Menno De Beer
      It won't just appear for you on PS Vita. You have to visit the PlayStation Store on either your PS3 or in your browser. Then you have the choice of either getting just Elite Squadron or the Star Wars PSP Bundle. Elite Squadron is normally $20 but I waited for a sale on PSN and was able to snag it for $8.
      If you can afford the $40 price, the SW PSP Mega Bundle is probably your best option, as it includes The Force Unleashed (which has a bunch of exclusive PSP content), Elite Squadron, Renegade Squadron, Battlefront 2, Republic Heroes, and LEGO Star Wars III. Although, keep in mind that Renegade has trouble running on the Vita.
      Once you've bought your digital copy of the game, you need to download it to your PS3 (or I guess if you lack a PS3, you'd be using Sony Media Go), and then connect your system to your Vita while your Vita is in Storage Manager. You can finally choose to copy over Elite Squadron here, and then it will start downloading. Once it's finished, you should be good to go!
      I know it's a convoluted system, but at the very least, Sony does have a new bonuses included for once you have a PSP title on your system. You can rebind prompts to your right analog stick and/or the system's touch controls, and unlike PS Vita titles, you'll retain your PSP saves on your memory card, even if you delete the title thereafter.
      Finally, if you don't mind doing the extra leg work, the PPSSPP emulator does play the Elite Squadron demo, if you'd like to try that first before dropping on money on the game. The demo isn't playable via PS Vita for some reason, but it can be tested at least via the emulator.
      If you have any further questions, just let me know! I hope you enjoy your time with the game.

    5.2 is way to low. you can't just expect a whole last gen game on a psp. if you gave battlefront EA a better rating then something is seriously wrong

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  8 лет назад +8

      +Dylan Gouldthorpe To clarify - 5 is “Average” on my review scale (I've got a video explaining the review scale coming up soon), so I'd say I'm actually giving fairly decent marks for an obscure PSP game. I also strongly praised the game for its ambitious elements. It's just that I'm equally realistic about how Elite Squadron is undercut by no longer having multiplayer and it's repetitious nature (among other problems).
      It's not that Elite Squadron is a bad game, and I'm not saying that people shouldn't try it if they're interested; but it does have notable problems, and those have to be acknowledged. If anything, I'd be more upset with myself if I had padded the review score for Elite Squadron simply because EA's Battlefront got a 5.5 out of 10. Then I'd be putting personal bias before the score I felt Elite Squadron was owed.
      Also, consider this: EA's Battlefront, at LAUNCH, only got a 5.5 out of 10 from me. That means, at the game's height of hype and interest, it could barely score better than a last-gen PSP game. That's not a knock against Elite Squadron, but it's a pretty big knock against EA's Battlefront.
      Finally, like I said in the EA Battlefront video, multiplayer games are fluid beasts and the review was a snapshot of the game at a specific point in time. It was a review of the game in 2015, with none of the updates or DLC included. It's a time capsule, which has unfortunately aged considerably since the game's first major DLC expansion is on the way. This is why I traditionally prefer to review games well AFTER their DLC is released -- especially multiplayer games. Then you can truly see how lasting an appeal each game has to offer.
      Thanks for the comment, and I hope that cleared things up!

      They also could have made the Melee combat better, and actually have the Melee Weapons appearance match what you see in continuity. Force Pikes are a lot longer then that, and Electrostaffs are the size of a double-bladed saber.
      In the Battlefront 2 PSP game, saber combat is flashy, and eaxh character has different attacks when movie and when standing still. It doesn't even look realistic, it looks stupid, when an opponent is behind you, you nonchalantly wave your Melee weapon or lightsaber behind your back to strike them.
      The AI is too easy to kill in Heroes vs Villains mode, especially with a saber.
      However, I'd rather have a bad story then no story, and, while I miss a lot of the leaked cutscenes that could have been in here, it tells the story decently, and the character cameos are kinda cool.
      Aside from that, the game feels packed with content.
      Just as well, the space battles and gunplay feel pretty good, though the auto-aim is off at times.
      I like how there are multiple ways to win battles, you could win by taking over command posts, shooting out the enemy ship, meaning no more mass reinforcements.
      I don't think this game is bad, hell, its certainly better then the new battlefront.

    • @azzzanadra
      @azzzanadra 8 лет назад

      Darskul to me the only good thing about elite squadron is the campaign, despite it having a lot of content it became boring so quickly.

    • @teddyisaliar271
      @teddyisaliar271 8 лет назад +3

      azzzanadra come on it at least it looked like they put a effort into the game and not like a certain company cough cough EA & DICE who spent all there money on graphics. The ground to space changed everything which was enjoyable and I liked how you could actually destroy the ship and escape using a escape pod and I didn't mind the custimation but I would prefer if they had default looks like they had in the battlefront 1 & 2. But for what they did on that console I thought it was really good the only thing I wished they changed was the lightsaber combat and have all the ships assessable cause we got to play in the ARC-170 but you can in certain missions and we saw Y wings, TIE intercepters, bombers and defenders but I loved the unique hero ships and both the capital ship and frigates available so you could do what they did with renegade squadron on that one map with that space station thing where you could get unique fighters. And I would change the galatic conquest a bit so it could be more like battlefront 2

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  8 лет назад +11

      Hello IrishRaider5590, thanks for the comment!
      To clarify, I gave it a 5.2 out of 10, which on my ratings scale of 5 as average, is just a slight bit above average. It's not that I didn't find some pleasure in playing the game, I even played around with it a few times since this review. That doesn't mean I'm going to ignore its flaws, in fact, if I did, then I'd be doing you a disservice and not be giving an honest review.
      Also, just because it's a PSP game from 2009 does not mean it should be coddled. There are some amazing games on hardware older than the PSP (such as Super Metroid and DOOM), and also games far worse on modern systems (such as the THIEF reboot or Knack). The system and age have an impact on some factors, such as hardware capability and controls, but it's up to game developers to work past those confines and produce a great product regardless of the platform.
      For example -- Conduit 2 is just a fun shooter, regardless of the fact it is on the Wii or not. Being on the Wii gives it some unique quirks and limitations, but it lives and dies by its game design more than its platform. This is the same case with Elite Squadron, which lacks the breadth of content and polish that could have made it a hit game. However, with its numerous faults, and it's normal price tag of $20 on PSN, it's hard for me to recommend, even as someone who was hoping I'd really enjoy it.

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  8 лет назад +2

      Hello Karl, thanks for the comment!
      To clarify I reviewed the PSP version of Elite Squadron, not the DS version, specifically for the criticisms you yourself pointed out -- it was watered down and by all accounts an inferior game. Therefore my review does not reflect the DS version of the game, so I'm afraid regardless of your feelings on the DS version, it's a completely different game and doesn't have much bearing on this. I realize they have the same name but they are virtually unrecognizable when placed alongside each other.
      Now, I have a question for both you and "I couldnt think of a name". What, in any way, was epic, lengthy, charming, and or highly "Star Wars" about the campaign to Elite Squadron? Take a moment and really think hard about it.
      I ask this, because, we are talking about a story where you play a voiceless protagonist who gets micromanaged by various iconic characters, which culminates in a final duel fueled by an underdeveloped rip-off of the relationship between Obi-wan and Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. It's all incredibly derivative of other Star Wars stories, and even if you look at the original FULL story for the cancelled game that's been posted online, it's not great. Very few of the characters develop or have unique personalities, and cliches abound. Much like Free Radical's storyline in Haze, it's pretty clear the story writers weren't sure how to offer something new or interesting. It's a damn shame considering the studio's pedigree in the past, but it is what it is.
      Things are even worse on the PSP. General Kota and that bounty hunter woman literally appear out of thin air because they are never given a moment to be established in the plot. What connective tissue there was before in the Free Radical version has been completely eliminated in favor of getting the game out on time. This is not an incarnation of the story made with love, this is a campaign mode made to meet a deadline. Coruscant literally ends mid-mission without a proper conclusion. If you enjoyed it, then great! That means that at least on some level, Rebellion did their job properly when salvaging Battlefront III. I am in no way saying you can't enjoy the game, nor is my review preventing you from doing so. However, just because you enjoyed it doesn't mean it lacks problems or that everyone is going to like it.
      I hope that clears things up. Cheers!

      +Unabridged Gamer The PSP version from what I can see here is much, much better than the DS version. Still I liked it because I loved the campaign. Maybe you didn't like it, but this was the first Battlefront game I ever played and I loved it before I even knew Battlefront was a big franchise. The campaign felt like a full Star Wars story, even better than the awesome campaign in Battlefront 2. I'm sorry if you didn't like it, but I got a little ticked off when you crapped on something beloved from my childhood

    • @UnchainedEruption
      @UnchainedEruption 8 лет назад +1

      Unabridged Gamer Maybe in the campaign on PSP they cut some corners because they hadn't animated that part yet. But see in the DS they only used pictures and text boxes, so while it sounds worse at first, it actually looks and feels better (then crappy animation). Plus this way they can include the full story without having to cut. From what I remember, X1 and X2 were being personally awarded by Chancellor Palpatine himself for their valor on Tatooine when General Grievous invades Coruscant. From then on your mission is to track down Grievious and you eventually fight him near the trains, but he escapes. You then have to get in an ARC-170 and try to clear a path so that Anakin and Obi-Wan can make it to the Invisible Hand. I don't remember how the bounty hunter/love interest first joins, but I don't think I had a problem with it. I thought Falon Grey was a noble hero.

There is nothing else like it as far as I know and the battles you would get into with the mechanic was def one of the best memories about the games along with me destroying the enemy capital ship almost every single game in conquest.

      DICE certainly aimed for a smaller scale for the battle, but even in that regard, that in of itself isn't a bad idea if done right. Killzone: Mercenary is 4 vs 4 multiplayer in each of its modes, yet feels just as intense as the biggest matches in Killzone 3, for instance. I do have a theory as to why the new Battlefront panned out the way it did, but that's a subject for a future video!
      Thanks for the comment, hope you enjoyed the video!

    Conquest mode, both in Instant Action and Galactic Conquest, felt the same in every single freaking map. Start a game, capture the Ion Cannon, shoot the capital ship, then capture the rest. Rinse and repeat. This was a huge step down from Renegade Squadron, in which all of the maps actually had a unique factor to them.
    The game really makes me wish even more that Battlefront 3 wasn't cancelled, especially considering the huge potential it had on better hardware.
    I still call this game "Battlefront 3" because Rebellion and nSpace at least had the courtesy to salvage the remains, but this game only ever scrapes the surface of what would make a good Star Wars game.

      Actually, I've done a fair bit of research since posting this video and not only were several missions drastically changed, but only some of the maps are close to 1:1 with the main console versions. Vjun was never meant to be a map and that's why it's not present in the DS version or any of the leaked builds for Battlefront 3. Dantooine is also drastically scaled back.
      The DS version has the most complete rendition of the story, but it's still missing a few bits and pieces, and obviously is otherwise a completely different game.
      Elite Squadron is Rebellion's hasty attempts to put together what assets were lying around and what resources were still available. Which is why characters give exposition dumps mid-battle, as they didn't have many finished cutscenes to work off of.

    Wtf this game is awsome THIS was my standard as a Star Wars Battelfront game. The gameplay was amaexing you could start at one planet captrue some points go to the space with a ship get in a destroyer ship, activate the auto-destruction. Wtf it had everything it was a real dinamic battle. Like Battlefield games but with more objectives. The combat was awesome at the same time you were captruing some base in land your allies were capturing the enemy ship, or maybe your friends prefered to maintain the sky of the planet or the space clear of enemy ships and only played as pilots, but with the option to land they ship and start fighting as a normal soldier. It was my first multiplayer game and no other game give me the same sensation.
    The actual Battlefronts have 2 sides well divided: or you are playing in ground or you are playing in the "sky". But you can't go from sky to ground with same "life" (i mean landing the ship and to the ground battle).
    We need this game with better graphics and better controls for PC, the Battlefronts EA is releasing this days are an insult to this game. We don't care that much in "GRAPHICS" we want a gme with good mechanics and good gameplay for GOD sake!!!

    • @UnabridgedGamer
      @UnabridgedGamer  5 лет назад

      Marius - I understand being frustrated by how EA handled things, but I think you just highlighted the main point of contention here: this is a nostalgic game for you. It's fine that you enjoyed it, I certainly walked in hoping I would.
      That said, some of the features you specifically point out, like the multiplayer? That's not accessible anymore unless you can actually gather multiple people with the game and the handhelds to play it. In fact, I specifically cite in my review that it's a shame the AI -doesn't- explore the options presented to players. Like, I would've loved to try and play as a support role or sniper, but the AI actively discourages this by primarily engaging in close-quarters shootouts.
      I know things aren't ideal for Star Wars fans right now, but there -are- alternatives. Galaxy in Turmoil aims to capture Battlefront's gameplay as a F2P title on Steam. The original Battlefront 2 on PC has mods that greatly enhance its gameplay and allow you to experience this sort of action on vastly superior hardware. Battlefield 1 and V both, ironically, are aiming much harder to capture the Battlefront experience than DICE LA's Battlefront. It's not all doom and gloom mate.

      The digital version runs on PS Vita and PS TV, so if it's more financially feasible to make the upgrade, I highly advise it. Runs great on my Vita.

      Okay, that's fair, but... why did you look up a review for it, then?

      I wasn't reviewing it for you as a kid, I was critiquing it as someone would experience it today. Your memories are yours - I'm glad you got something out of it. That doesn't mean things don't age or have flaws.

    Well done review I always enjoyed the game somewhat, but it was not up to it's full potential so I agree with your review.
    Although have you heard of the indie remake that the development studio Frontwire studios is working on. Here is a link to there site if you have not frontwirestudios.com/ Oh and their youtube page has footage if you wish to check it out.

      Hello Jonathan, glad you enjoyed the review!
      Yes indeed, I have heard of Frontwire. In fact, once we get my work PC in tip-top shape again, I have an interview with their president that will be going up ASAP. I'm really looking forward to what they're doing, and hope they get to make a proper release without Disney or EA giving them any headache. Their early prototype footage has looked quite promising. Thank you for the suggestion!

      Oh also now you have one more subscriber, may the force be with you and your channel. Oh and I am definitely looking forward to your interview with the president of Frontwire and will be sure to tell my friends interested in the game to check out your video.

      You two must know that Frontwire received a C&D from EA.
      They have now turned away from the Star Wars IP in their game and are making something completely original.

      Yeah I saw the video on the channel talking about it a couple weeks ago, but thank you for telling us anyways. Also I believe I will still play their game when it comes out, since the core mechanics are supposed to be the same.
