Xymox Hybrid Snare UPDATE (It's bad)

  • It took a year for the Xymox Hybrid Snare drum that I ordered to arrive. I love the drum and it sounds great and I thought Xymox had turned around their customer service, but it seems they are back to where they always were as both of the drums they sent me broke (I had 3 problems with 2 drums) and despite being told twice 2 weeks apart that they'd put the new stuff in the mail "tomorrow" it's been a month and a half and I have nothing and can't get a response from anyone there other than a form email response.
    UPDATE: The new bottom rim I received has also cracked in 2 places. After my issues with the first one I hardly tightened it and even still it cracked.

    Plain and simple... either produce the drums, give refunds, or get the crap sued outta you by pretty much everyone who has tried to order one of these...

      I wonder if anyone has actually gone to sue them yet? I've seen so many stories similar to mine (waiting 14 months and counting, others waiting much longer and shorter times), but I haven't seen anyone say "I've begun the process for a lawsuit."

    I feel you. I’m so glad people are putting the truth out there. I ordered a hybrid in May 2019, received it finally on July 20th 2020. Of course after hundreds of emails, Yelp reviews, Reddit reviews, and a BBB formal complaint. I’m not impressed with the drum at all. It sounds nothing like a snare drum, more like a tenor with some faint rattling. I took the whole thing apart and found that the guts are cut in all different lengths and not making contact with the drum head. I have emailed them 6 times in the last few weeks asking if the would just send me the gut mechanism with correct lengths, of course all I get is the auto response. So now I have a hybrid that’s completely dissembled and I’m trying to cut the guts shorter and having to crimp new aluminum stops on each cable. I’ll let you know how it turns out, but I’m not getting my hopes up. Although this is something I shouldn’t have to do in the first place. Luckily no parts broken YET...I was under the impression from all the hype and their demos that this would sound like an actual snare drum. I had plans to review it and record with it, but I would be embarrassed to put this thing on video. I will never buy another Xymox product again. It’s a waste of time, energy and money on a product that will break or not function properly. I do endorse RCP and Off World to the fullest, their products are great and customer service is excellent. And you can play on them a week after ordering. Xymox needs a class action lawsuit. Any lawyers out there? Lol But thanks snare man for all the great reviews and honesty! You’re a good dude. Keep on getting the word out to the drum community!!

      Ok did some custom metal work. Tightened the snares. Still doesn’t sound like a snare drum. Not sure how they made them sound like snare drums in all the hype videos...it’s currently packed away, too embarrassed to play it on video. I feel sorry for everyone that ordered one cause they’re not what they made it out to be...

    Thanks for your video series on this product.
    I ordered a hybrid snare on March 3 -- about a week before things began to grind to a halt. Previous experience with Xymox told me to forget about my order and be happily surprised whenever it showed up; and to be unfailingly polite and respectful in all my communications with the company.
    After a few fits and starts, including a billing error at their end, the Hybrid Snare arrived yesterday. Considering their history and reputation, this could set some new land-speed record.
    Examining the construction closely and drawing upon my experience as a bicycle mechanic, I surmised that, regardless of their ad copy, this drum simply would not stand up to ultra-high tensioning when 95% of its construction is plastic.
    After watching your video series and taking in reportsd from others who've gotten this drum, I've decided to simply put it back in its box and hold onto it as a future collectible. This is as much a serious "instrument" as a vintage Noble & Cooley child's tin drum -- with the notable difference being that my vintage Noble & Cooley is still playable at full volume after sixty years. I don't have the same confidence about this Xymox drum.

      Thanks for the comment. You'd only be the 3rd person that I know that has one of these. I agree on the plastic and high tension, as evidenced by the rim breaking on mine. My replacement stuff is supposed to now arrive tomorrow. We'll see how it is. Where else have you seen people that have them?

      @@SnareMan An old college friend ordered one for his daughter last fall. It arrived last week, five months after she had decided to drop marching band in favor of dance. He's a drummer too; so he's been messing around with it.
      I've told him about your video reviews and maybe he'll check it out. But his assessment is similar to mine. "SO much plastic -- how will this hold such high tension without collapsing?")
      I had a thought of swapping in a Mylar head (a Pinstripe?) in order to get away with lower tension; but the idea of having to compensate so blatantly for a design flaw annoys me.

    They arent even responding to my emails i get a robotic email thats automatically sent to you...that says that all the workers at xymoz are home and the only workers working rn are the 2 owners so im not happy im actually pretty pissed off

      Open a BBB complaint against them, they will respond with "your order will ship in a month." It won't but its fun to watch them say it over and over.

      No, have contacted the BBB for over 10 months and 3 different cases. Each time BBB rep Bertha closes case with response from Xymox giving an estimated ship date, which always comes and goes with no pad. We have been waiting for 18 months for a Hybrid Snare, and about 2 years for a rim, yes just a rim for a reserve pad

    Bought my Xymox tenor pad back in 2015. Xymox was exactly the same back then. Endless wait time and countless frustrated email exchanges that never actually led anywhere. They've been this way for years, and anyone who actually believes that they're willingly going to change without major consequences motivating them (like class-action lawsuit) is clearly living under a rock. "Different company" my gonads.

    The bottom rim cracked in 3 places a few weeks ago and Xymox has still not responded on how to get this fixed or replaced. Fun fact: Elle is their cat that they made an email account for haha

    They gave me a tracking number after waiting for 3 Weeks with expedited production. as soon as I get it I'm going to sell it because I don't want to deal with Xymox if it breaks.

      This is what I find so fascinating -- Xymox has a rep for insanely slow turnaround and poor customer service; people come to places like this to complain; and as soon as there's a scent of one for resale, folks literally swarm like Piranhas.

      My snare pad's rim broke within a week. Emailing got nothing. Now I have a broken pad and a 120 dollar hole in my wallet. Only good companies are Offworld, RCP, and all the main ones like vic firth and evans reelfeel.

    As soon as I saw that they were using the same plastic rims on their reserve pad on a high tension practice drum, I had serious doubts that they would hold up. Low and behold, Xymox's failure to think ahead comes back into light

    To anyone that sees this: just don’t wast your time with xymox. If you truly want a premium custom pad either go with drumslinger perc, or Rudimental drummers. Each take a couple months for them to get them to you, but they both have quality service for their custom pads in my experience. No waiting a year for a mediocre product nonsense.

    Seems like Xymox has not changed or sued yet... for those wanting a refund (I went through it twice for two different drums from Xymox). Don’t waste your time with reviews, calling directly (yea I have their number found on internet / financials), BBB complaint Etc. I tried it all.
    Recent orders
    1. Contact credit card company (typically within 90 days, you should not have to justify anything)
    2. Reason: you’ve been informed they will not be meeting delivery date (CC company will force a refund with Xymox’s accounting/bank so you don’t need to talk to Xymox)
    Key: banks have policies but to keep it simple, tell them you have “paper trail of official payment, IG posts of delays and not meeting delivery time .” Most have failed because either the CC staff did not tell you to provide screenshots of email proof or you did not offer it. They will see that Xymox is not responding and / or not meeting deadlines.
    For most people who waited more than 90 days - you can do the above.
    Obstacle: your bank may say it’s passed your 90 day protection... if staff is not cooperating then follow below steps:
    1. Send a “friendly” email to Xymox getting some sort of estimated date in writing. They always gave me “2 weeks” on multiple occasions. Key is to get a response (yea it’s hard but this is a must).
    If they don’t give you one, make something up but make sure it’s friendly...
    “I understand you are meeting a high demand and willing to wait. I just want a general idea .. 3 months 4 months (you just need a time frame)
    2. Once you have new estimated date (typically 2 weeks or something ridiculous)
    If 2 weeks or something short, wait for this time to pass before forwarding all email screen shots with time stamp to credit card company. They will use the new date to issue a refund based on their within 90 day protection policy.
    If something ridiculous, don’t wait, send everything to the bank.
    **offer screen shots/emails if the staff does not request it. Once it’s in their inbox they MUST work on it)
    Again, this bypasses Xymox’s customer service and goes directly to their banks.
    Basically you’re baiting Xymox to give you a new date in writing (bc they use a 2 week new timeframe template) and proving to your bank. Bank will use new date for their 90 day protection policy. Up to CC staff to issue refund but if you show proof of original estimated date and email thread with time stamp, they will most likely do it.

    I started searching for a good 'snare sound' style practice pad, and came across a video that showed the Xymox compared to others... then I started digging into more videos about them... Yeah, no thanks. Appreciate your honest review; Cool concept, garbage company, I'll spend my money with more reputable, honest, decent people. Xymox can pound sand.

    Wow... I just sent an email inquiring about the head diameter (just found out it’s 13), and got a rather quick response.... Hello,
    I hope you're having a wonderful week! We recently had to reassess our situation here in Southern California now that openings here have been rolled back and we are once again supposed to be closed as of 7/13. We are currently filling orders and operating 7 days per week (however, shipments go out daily Mon-Fri and sometimes they do pick up on Saturdays). Prior to this new mandate we had recently begun normal production again. Our intention is to continue operations and not completely close but to have employees stay home while the 2 owners quarantine together and operate all aspects of production at the shop on their own. This means the quantity we can produce per day is reduced, however we are determined to continue fulfilling orders as quickly as we can given the circumstances.
    You may already know that we had to close for 12+ weeks (mid-March to June) by the direction of the Governor of the State of California as a non-essential business. Many of our vendors located here in California that provide proprietary parts and materials to us also closed and may be closing once again but we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.     So I ordered mine about 3 months ago with expedited shipping which guaranteed a 2-4 week shipping I believe. I was getting actual responses from a person the first month and a half. Typically took about 2 days to respond, and basically just said were gonna get all the back orders out within the next few weeks. I keep emailing every week untill I get one saying that they will let me know when it ships and that they don't know when that'll be. I stopped emailing untill about a week or two ago, and now im getting the same auto responses as you. Hope they're still sending stuff out. I mean their Instagram shows products they've made, so who knows.

      Right. I asked about that expedited shipping way back when, if they were going to be able to meet it and she told me they could. Also said they'd refund the extra money if they couldn't so make sure you get that back.

      I ordered 3 weeks ago with expedited and just got a tracking number after I made an Instagram post, Made a chargeback, and Contacted the BBB. I tried to email them before I did all that but they gave me an automated email.

Cause there are loads of other youtubers I’ve seen dumping on Xymox and I haven’t seen a statement from Xymox as a company....

    I ordered the same drum on 8/24/2019 for $133.55 and it's still "In Production." It's been a year and still no real word. It's sad to see such a good product be poorly managed. Someone else has to see the demand and fill the void, right?

    What’s even worse is that a *_Chinese_* company (Jinbao) made a better version of this, metal hoops and an Invader-style pad on the back, making switching from the snare to the pad only around 2 seconds, longer if you have it in a tight snare basket. Sadly at this point it seems to be a one-off/limited supply, JamesAnimalHarrison has a few videos of it on his channel.

    I think the offworld pad could be drilled out and turned into a Xymox type pad with a little effort.

      It’d be extremely difficult. The off world pads don’t have enough material outside of the rubber diameter to put the added hardware and parts on

      @@ecampbell6447 I think you are thinking about making it a Hybrid Snare. I am thinking of making it like the Xymox Pad with the ball bearings. I figured a Forstner bit carefully applied would hog out the center and then just make it work.

      6 months time is considerable a fast time compared to a lot of other People’s orders which have been on for 1-2 years.

    Offworld is so much better about this. I got my pad in a week and emailed a question and got a response on the same day. Xymox needs to fix their production and customer service before I would even consider go to their website again.

    Ordered a tenor kick and one of the hybrid snares (kick ordered April 4, 2019, snare ordered May 5, 2019). Multiple emails to them, always the same excuse; "we're working on it... it'll be soon... next couple of weeks..."
    They continued to push back their "estimated" date. COVID hit, then I started to get the same response you got. I've asked for refunds multiple times as it seems as they're never going to deliver the product, and they ignore my requests.
    I re-opened my case with the BBB (I opened one late last year regarding this and they said it would be arriving "soon." spoiler: it didn't) and now I have a new completion date for the order on September 9. We'll see if they actually follow through with that.

    I filed a complaint against them with the BBB a couple weeks ago about a pad I ordered one year ago. Xymox responded with a specific date when my pad will arrive for the first time in a year. I wonder if they will actually go through with that, or if they’re even willing to lie to me through the BBB’s site as well.

    I ordered mine a year ago and have emailed them at least 15 times and now they are just copy and pasting that exact email that tells me that they do not have the materials to make my pad, which makes no sense considering they are posting on their instagram that they are building pads.

    Been waiting since May 2019. I have also gotten the auto replies. They have been the quickest responses I have ever gotten from them. The COVID thing would have only worked if they had a better track record. How they can legally still be in business is a shock. To me this seems like a cash grab to them. I've seen the Instagram stuff as well. I only follow them still to hopefully one day get my drum or get my money back. When I can order a brand new product from another company such as Beetle Percussion and get their BAP with in a month of its release you know their is an issue. Its the business.

    i still don't have my hybrid snare yet but i wish that they added metal rims so the snare head could get the extreme tension that everybody likes not some plastic rim that breaks easily when tightening it

    I payed for the expedited production which said it should ship out between 2 to 4 weeks. I've been waiting for over three months. I've emailed them asking for a refund for expedited production and they haven't answered.

      Mark Ponekovic me too I thought it was so cool in may of last year bought one then one week later I bought a second one just because I knew it was gonna take for ever and for some reason my brain told me well buy two and some how that was going to magically make me get one faster . I even offered to work free to help them make the drums and get them out to everybody timely , and personally my work ethic is always on beast mode so that’s kinda odd to refuse my help especially when offering to do it free I’m qualified in burning rubber on any pad or drum I won worlds fastest drummer 2019 I am well versed in banging pads to the point of no return I mean not only am I a drummer I’m a padder as well lol I just like xymox and always have and I know they can do it , I feel instead of complaining any more let me at least try to help them out if we all tell them we really love what they can do and point out all the pads they have made that everybody pretty much grew up loving vs bad mouthing or bashing them .,

    I ordered my hybrid snare December 25 2019 after 8 months I contacted the BBB. Xymox did respond that It would ship September 2020 Today is October 21, 2020 and I have no drum and no way to contact them. If you email you get the automated response.
    Update its now Dec 2020 a year has passed so I called my credit card co and got a refund!

    Finally got a Sheriff's Deputy to roll over to the facility. SURPRISE, its empty. They are moving to LA. If you are waiting for something, you'll be waiting even longer. Given their ability to keep track of things I will bet a doughnut they will lose orders and repairs etc...
