Hi! I am researching the history of pockets for a presentation and would love to make examples of my own to go along with it. How long did it take you to entirely hand sew these pocket hoops? They look lovely, by the way! Do you have any materials suggestions?

It took about 7 hours to hand sew these together. I used the Norah Waugh pattern (from Corsets and Crinolines). Patterns of Fashion 5 is also a great resource for these. Linen with linen threads is historically accurate but any heavy weight fabric will do. I used spring steel for the bones (I bought mine from Truly Victorian). You can also used cane. Thicker synthetic baleen may also work.
I also have a video on the history of pockets of you’re interested in that.

@@costumeandconservation Thank you! I just recently got some linen thread from Burnley & Trowbridge.... It's SO much better than AP thread! I'm never going back :) I'll take a look at these!

Why did we ever endure 2012 jegging pockets when we could have had these bad boys?

I once showed my cousin a picture of pocket hoops and she said. "Wow, they're HUGE! You could fit all seven of your kids in there..."
