Livadeia or Levadeia is a city in Central Greece and the capital of the Prefecture of Viotia with a population of 22,113 inhabitants.
According to one tradition, the city was formerly called Midea and was built on a hill. Although many historians such as Homer and Pausanias do not mention it by its current name, it is rumored to have existed during Homer's time, so it is identified with Midea, which was most likely its Homeric name. It was later renamed to Levadeia by Athenaeus Levados, who settled the inhabitants in the plain. It joined the community of Boeotians having a common currency and followed the fate of the other Boeotian cities. In 395 BC it was plundered by Lysander, shortly before the Battle of Aliartos and in 86 BC. by Mithridates. However, it reached a particular height during the 2nd century AD. because of its many sanctuaries and temples.
The ancient city was built on the right bank of the Erkyna and its ruins came to light after excavations. Most of its buildings such as the bath, the market, the road, the register, as well as a large number of inscriptions date from the 4th BC. until the 3rd AD century.
But the most important archaeological site is the ancient Oracle of Trophonio, which was located and excavated on the left bank of the Erkyna, on Mount Ai-Lia. In Roman times, the city was called "sacred city", due to the presence of the sacred grove and the oracle on its territory, which were dedicated to the hero and god Trophonius. But what is so different about the Trophonian Oracle.
In the area where the springs of Ercyna are located, a "strange" oracle operated during antiquity, the oracle of Trophonius Zeus. It was located near the grove of Trophonio and had been created before the oracle of Delphi. Important personalities such as Croesus, Mardonius, Aemilius Paulus used to visit it to get an oracle for the future.
In the area of Krya, walking along the cobbled streets you will come across the river of Erkyna. It was named after the nymph Hercyna and is one of the largest female rivers in Greece after the Neda, located in Ilia. According to mythology, its flow began during a game of Hercyna with her friend Persephone.While they were playing with a goose in the Trophonio grove, the bird flew away and hid in a cave. Persephone to catch it, moved the stone, which was at the entrance, and rushing water overflowed. To this day, in the center of the river there is a bust of the nymph Hercyna on a rock, while in some parts of the river you can go down and wet your feet in its waters.
The stone bridges and waterfalls, created by the rushing waters of the river, make you feel like you are in a fairytale landscape. The large watermills take you on a journey to the adventures of Don Quixote, while the castle, which overlooks the gorge, takes you back to the 21st revolution. The Byzantine castle was expanded by the Franks and the Catalans.
Finally, the Clock Tower, which was built during the Frankish period and served as a torch, is an important element of the city. In 1803, Lord Elgin gifted the town with a clock, so that the local hooligans and agades would not obstruct his excavations of the Trophonian Oracle. The clock was placed on the Tower due to its prominent position and is one of the characteristic points in Livadia.
Even if Livadia is a fairly small town, it is a point of reference for many historical events, which makes the town famous everywhere.
