I had this and am selling it, as a stills guy. I found Sigma's 65mm to just be better optically and more fun to use with its metal construction, odd focal length, and tactile controls.
I have had the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 T* ZA for five years, though I do want a Lens to have an aperture ring and a AF/MF switch, I can live it, because the 55mm are so compact and Light weight, very well built and with excellent optical image quality ! When combining the 55mm with the excellent Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 T* you have a very nice compact and Light weight set for fx Street Photography. About focal length, I really do not like 28mm and 50mm focal length, boring and to often either too wide or too narrow, the 55mm is just that bit longer and are better for fx portraits of people.
This is also great for barbers/stylists/make up artists etc for photos. I am a barber and this lens always gives me way better photos than sony 135gm and sigma 85 dg dn, the sharp but soft thing is so true thats why its a game changer for this niche of users exactly what we need
The best way I would describe the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 is a modern lens with all of the benefits that means but with a slight and very well controlled vintage vibe. The slight swirl in the bokeh is just amazing!
It was the first lens I bought when I started down the Sony full-frame route, and I still love it. The biggest disadvantage is that it doesn't focus very close. To get round this I add a Nikon 4T close-up lens using a 49-52 step-up ring. The results are excellent with very little degradation of those famous razor sharp images that the 55mm produces.
I have this lens for 2 years its almost perfect , size weight sharpness , af speed , the only downside its the minical focus distance I sell it recently and I buyed 50 1.2 gm for work but I will buy again the 55 1.8 to travel .
hey there, awesome video! this lens is stellar even tho you've rented the old version with a lot of CA and bit slower AF. Old verson got the 'Carl Zeiss' branding, new ones same look, but only 'zeiss' branding on them.
One lens to buy in 2024, Sigma 50mm 1.4 DG Dn or Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8? Both photos and videos. (Considering that next one will be Sony GM 90mm 2.8 macro 😂) Thanks! 🙏

@@KenseiAkatsu ALL autofocus lenses have trouble one way or an other !!! I have some of the very best Sony GM lenses, they can also struggle with AF, THAT is why I do manual focusing 99% of the time, faster and much more precise !
Loved this lens!
You?
Even if it's way more heavier (like 4 times this Zeiss), I love my Sigma Art 50mm F1.4 too much to consider replacing it with the 55mm Sony Zeiss.
Ordered this just of manny Ortiz and your review, you guys sold me on it. Get it on Tuesday :)

You explained it well sharp yet soft, I own Nikon z but adapt this lens it is beautiful rendering and best infrared lens I have ever seen.
Bought this 2017
I sold every lens since that except this lens 🤣
Its the best

Hi David do you have any details of the Nikon 4T .. have the same 55mm lens and the lack of close focus frustrates me . All the best Gary
Not many other Lenses apart from macro lenses have better close focus !
Absolutely love that lens
YES!
Great review! Thank you
Very welcome!

I own two copies of it. A jewel of a lens.
True!
Haha, nice ending! talented review
Glad you liked it!

I never knew this. Do the newer ones have improved CA performance?
All lenses give the same compression from the same distance. It's just more or less cropped.
What do you think is a better lens: sigma 35 art or this 55 1.8? Thanks you! Love your channel
I like this better.
Because it’s much lighter and 55mm gives me more tighter shot!

If i can only afford buy 1 lens.... would you recommend this? i want to use it for making shutterstock photos
How about Sigma 28-70mm F2.8??
How’s the noise when changing aperture and auto focusing in photos A mode - AF-S focus mode setting to F22?
Not a lot
one more subscribe, fantastic content!!!!!!!
Does the autofocus motor hearable while recording video?
Sometimes yes

I had 85mm 1.8 should I buy one more 55mm 1.8?
If I were you, I'll keep 85
Great Lens lightweight and fabulous on gimbal, NICE DOG 👍🏿🫶🏿
Love my 55 ziess. Love it for video and photos. Only 2 bad things are the minimum focus distance and manual focus on this is terrible lol.
Amazing lens!
I wish it could zoom in more, but still I think it's more than what we pay!
To use it for macro, I add a Nikon 4T close-up lens, attached using a 49-52mm step-up ring.

Japanese like French sounds very musical
Sexy??

Hey, anyone wanna buy his lens??
@@KenseiAkatsui will!
jk, i already have it 😅
@@JesusChristSaves. I sold it, I replaced it with the Sigma. Now waiting for the GM II.
"The lens didn't know where to focus....on a mountain" Really dude? Just revive your dormant cells and use manual focus man.
I’m talking about AF, open your 👂 man.
