I sincerely appreciate your good intentions in making this video. For older viewers this video is somewhat humorous because record playing is very common to us. So that you may relate to what I've written here, imagine that you are watching a video in the future, several years from now, and someone in that video is demonstrating in detail how to turn off and on and water faucet. If you think that imagined scenario is ridiculous, know that in some public establishments there are bathrooms with faucets that are automated to turn off and on automatically without the user touching any type of handle or control. If eventually these automatic faucets are installed in most places, there could be people in the future who have no idea how to manually operate a water faucet.
I have met people who cannot play even cassettes, and not even anything that has an actual button or is basically non-touch. We are pretty close. BTW, if you know how to play a record what are you doing on this video?
Thanks, Paul. Although record players are not nearly as intuitive as using a faucet , you make a great point. Something that may be very intuitive and basic to one may be foreign and challenging for others. Hope future generations will be able to continue enjoying vinyl records for years to come!
Come on gang, some RUclips videos exist solely because someone did a search on "how do I play vinyl records?" This video answers the question. It might be obvious to you, but to someone who grew up with streaming and wants to get started with vinyl, you gotta start somewhere!
Lol my parents are asian and they couldn't operate a turntable. I was approx 9 years old and I told them to put the arm down on the spinning disc. They wouldn't listen and kept arguing so out of frustration, I put it down and could hear music for 1 and a half seconds before my dad lifted it up and smacked me behind the head. In the end, they threw away the turntable that wasn't broken instead of listening to me :( People who can operate this were bron before the ninetys like me (1989) born in the west but outside of that, people have no clue on what this strange device is supposed to make music. I still have a grudge against my parents for that.
my mother is 91 years old (b. 1927, in south east China ) she even knows the terms of turntable, cassette deck or amplifier..etc. In Chinese of course.
I see many people today using DJ turntables that usually won't be used with a dust cover because they were meant for clubs and mixing and DJ work where dust covers would be in the way. But for home use I always use a dust cover on my turntable. Dust is your records #1 enemy. DJ turntables are good quality but if you have a dust cover for your turntables....I recommend their use.
I have LPs that I have not played since the 90s bc my son broke my turntable. I actually feel nervous about putting a needle on a new vinyl bc they scratch easily. Started buying cds in the early 90s but kept my old vinyl records. Now there seems to be a vinyl craze with new issued vinyl in colors. So cool.
Ahhhhhhh....so that's how you do it...I feel like such an idiot..I've been trying to play some records for about 2 weeks now and couldn't figure it out...thanks man..lol
Thank you so much! I love Opeth but for some reason the band decided to add an extra track on the Vinyl version of their album, Black Water Park, and while sure I can listen to it on RUclips I like to have tangible things. Besides the album artwork is badass and I'd love to have a huge and improved version of it.
I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad i found this video. I had no idea! i was just sitting here wondering why my Vinyl record wouldnt fit in my cd player. Thankyou so much!
as much as this video may seem odd some people might not know how to put the stylus right at the edge so it catches the lead in groove but then again that should be a video in it's own right because if a stylus is skipping over ALL the grooves it could also be anti skate
I can afford an entry-level turntable (~Pro-Ject Debut Carbon or similar) and a budget phono pre but the price of vinyl in 2018 is way OTT. Back in the day, I got sick of lugging milk crates full of LPs from rental to rental, and having them stolen/damaged at parties - its great if you have the room and the budget but I'll stick with digital audio for now. Thanks for the vid.
You can also put a needle down on a disc not spinning by hand and then rotate the platter a little to hear a click. Then just push start/stop button and it plays. But you can do this only on a DJ direct-drive turntables.
great vid!! thanks for sharing. can you choose the song you wanna play on the record? what happened if you moved the arm closer to the center of the dish or the arm automatically moves to process the "soundtrack" ?
Steve Yoo I think highly of that when you handle an LP got to put your hand under the circle of it not the grooves because it will collect fingerprints or dust that will ruin the record
You’re just charging your records by doing that you have to touching the brush against the metal spindle on the record player this will make the record nonstatic
I dont understand. How do I know where to put the needle if i wanna play the first song from the beginning? And are vinyls really at that much of risk of being damaged if i screw something up? Like make them unusable? Or is this fear just for those that want to keep their records as minty as possible?
Nice now any recommendations to a turntable I could get? Some say Crosley but I've read bad things about them. I need something that plays my vinyl records without ruining them and something that can transfer vinyl to digital (I have music that hasn't been released on CD or iTunes and I like to keep a digital copy of those rarities like when I go the gym?) update: i got the Audio technica lp120
emptyspotlight I dunno if this is too late but do NOT buy Crosley. They are cheap nasty turntables that will not only not do your music justice with poor quality tinny speakers, but also chew up your records. Since you want digital conversion I recommend the same table this guy has: an Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB which allows you to transfer records to a digital format on a PC. I have this table and I have found it to be excellent.
looks like i've made the right choice getting Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB picked it up at best buy 2 weeks ago, i had less money in the bank but in the end it was worth it. i've also heard the same Victrola players the newer ones you see at like Dillard's and stuff.
Good choice avoiding the Crosley! As Gallifrey1993 mentioned in his comment, Crosley's have been known to damage your records over time. Happy spining!
+Teddy2Grizzly There are 12 inch records that are 45 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM), and 7 inch records that are 33 1/3 RPM. But most often 7 inch singles are 45 RPM, and 12 inch albums are 33 1/3 RPM :) (Oh, and there are some records that play from the inside out, as well... not that common, but do exist. "Sigur Rós - Ekki Mukk" for example).
Do not Hold your Record like that, it is Prone to slip on your hand and dropping it.. Look here's a Logic on this. The needle or Stylus is Sharper than your skin and we drop it everywhere the groove but doesn't affect any performance or sound quality, compare it to our soft skin. So basically it is ok to touch the record with your skin and hold it with your thumbs for much safer way to take out on its sleeves. It is not a CD that if you touch the surface 50% it will not play and Look you're going to put it on a Slipmat that is Rougher than your skin
hi, so i was planning on buying the audio-technica at-lp60 wireless and i got some questions do i have to use bluetooth speakers? is it worth the buy? im a beginner so i need some help
De República Dominicana. no piquincles. quiero saver como puedo arquirir un equipo de estos y cual es el costo si es que hay ala venta. espero su respuesta. gracias
Do you (or anybody else) know any good record players, that are good for sampling vinyl, for a $100 or less? Or is it definitely worth spending an extra $100 to get that one?
Hey Dig, you're absolutely right! The vibrations from the speakers, depending on the setup, can cause the needle to move and even potentially damage the vinyl. I had to make this video for a presentation in college and had to move my setup temporarily to the living room where the lighting was better. Didn't think that the video would get this much traction. Thanks for watching!
Federica Mezza IM NEVER WHAT I LIKE IM DOUBLE SIDED AND I JUST CANT HIDE I KINDA LIKE IT WHEN I MAKE YOU CRY CAUSE IM TWISTED UP YEAH IM TWISTED UP INSIDE MY MIND
A TT with pitchcontrol isn't that desirable and putting the speakers on the same plank of wood the TT is spinning is the worst case scenario I can think of.
Wow....thanks , I clearly see my college education was worthless, I'll still have to study, but 1 day, I too might be smart enough to put a record on a turntable...thank you sensei, may the force be with you, wait there's music,....ON BOTH SIDES???.... BOOONNUUUSSSSS!!
lengua muerta eh it seems funny but many of the people don't even know how to properly do it, so many of them touch records right by the lid because they don't know. this video is pretty informative and i was actually looking for something like this to send someone who doesn't know how to do it in the right way

kinda scares me though, reminds me of that one scene from wall-e

I sample to make beats and I always download it but I want to buy rare vinyls to do so now
Thank you I've looked through a lot of videos just to see how to play the record, and you just got right to it very well. Again thank you.😁
This is exactly what I needed.
Lol my parents are asian and they couldn't operate a turntable. I was approx 9 years old and I told them to put the arm down on the spinning disc. Feels bad man

I hate when parents don't listen to you
bro that's childhood trauma

on some very odd levels, this is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen.

Much appreciated for this thank you!
Amazing tutorial. Thanks man!

I’ve never used a vinyl record player before. I haven’t even used cassettes either.
Thanks for sharing the video, Steve!
Sweet turntable my friend.
After this video I'm not sure if I'd have enough dedication for owning a turntable 😅
I had to show my son this video. Lol, I read people asking what brand turntable this? If I had to guess Technics SL 1200 MKII.
Death Cab For Cutie are lyrical geniuses
Joe Holland you never heard Dan Le sac vs scroobius pip then, among many other bands
Need speakers though, right? The sound won't come out of the side of it or anything?
who’s watching this in 2021 ? ME 😁👍🏻
By the time you actually get to play the damn thing this way you will change your mind and just put on the Radio.
I fancy this guy.
New retro collectors watching this in amazement! LOL! Kids today just tell Alexa to play music.
this guy is the definition of hipster XD beanie, check, gingham shirt, check, has his own website, check, plays music on vinyls, check
The fact people have to watch this video to actually play a record 😂
Atleast this video is helpful for them lol
1 video, going on 200,000 views. Legend
Yasss, I love Death cab for cutie!
I wanted to figure out how to configure the arm and the weight and I still don’t know how to.
What album were you using to demonstrate? The beginning sounded pretty cool.
Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie
Such a simple question yet few actually show how it's done. Born in the digital age I just dont understand how this works
whats the little black part with the hole in the middle for tho?
45 adapter
You’re just charging your records by doing that you have to touching the brush against the metal spindle on the record player this will make the record nonstatic

glad i decided to get the AT-LP120-USB !
Victrola.
hey, great video.. but what weight should the needle be at? and 12 inch records are 331/3 right?
Teddy2Grizzly 33 and 1/3 rotations per minute, and 7 inch records are 45 rotations per minute.
+Teddy2Grizzly There are 12 inch records that are 45 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM), and 7 inch records that are 33 1/3 RPM. But most often 7 inch singles are 45 RPM, and 12 inch albums are 33 1/3 RPM :)

WHere do i buy the record cleaner?????
Frickin thanks! I'm an 11 year old and I want hot space for my birthday and this will be such a help!
Is it the same process with a good band? Thanks
Do not Hold your Record like that, it is Prone to slip on your hand and dropping it.. Look here's a Logic on this. How about compressed air? No friction, works on pc parts too!
Could you do a video on how to brush your teeth pls
Youre appreciated
hi,
so i was planning on buying the audio-technica at-lp60 wireless and i got some questions
do i have to use bluetooth speakers?
is it worth the buy?
im a beginner so i need some help
What’s the turntable and amp that you are using?
De República Dominicana. no piquincles. quiero saver como puedo arquirir un equipo de estos y cual es el costo si es que hay ala venta. espero su respuesta. gracias
but how do i start from the beginning???
I just figured out how to play vinyl records today.
Thank you. 👍
what if I don't have a brush?
And I was wondering why my music skipped around parts
For your next video....how to tie your slippers.
Very good G Thanks
...That cartridge is misaligned... >.< .....
It sure is !!
nerds
How does it start at the beginning if the needle starts randomly?
The groove(s) are in a spiral, there is only one way for the needle to go.
@@joepachten2976 Well I feel stupid
whats the name of this turntable?
If I had to guess Technics SL 1200 MKII
'Next week : How to open a door' 😂

Thank you.
what speaker you wearing on the turntable?
nice, very nice! tanks
Could I just take a dry rag Ober the record and press gently to clean the record?
whý? Åŕė Wê Thęřĕ Ýëť no, rags are too rough on records.
Are those the Dayton audio speakers?
Hey Freddie, yes they are!
Bro put some lights on. Really can't see it.
Do you (or anybody else) know any good record players, that are good for sampling vinyl, for a $100 or less? Or is it definitely worth spending an extra $100 to get that one?
Jack Johnston 6-1 violara
nice job! thanks.
Bad Idea to place the Speakers on the same surface as the turntable is
Why it's a bad idea?
Vibrations of your speakers(bass) can change the sound

nice
Hey man! Great video, but I have a question: is the turntable full automatic or semi automatic? 😉
No automatic at all. Technics 1200 mk 2 is classic
Federica Mezza IM NEVER WHAT I LIKE IM DOUBLE SIDED AND I JUST CANT HIDE I KINDA LIKE IT WHEN I MAKE YOU CRY CAUSE IM TWISTED UP YEAH IM TWISTED UP INSIDE MY MIND

I'm sh*t out of luck. My records are styrene.
Bro which brand is the player
If I had to guess Technics SL 1200 MKII
oooh death cab
So wait, do I put the record on the turntable before or after the needle? This stuff is so confusing.
Sloe Bone seriously bro
You've probably figured it out by now but before
What kind of turntable is that?
Hey, Carmelo! It's a Technics SL1200 MK5!
Steve Yoo good ol' classic!
cool.
A TT with pitchcontrol isn't that desirable and putting the speakers on the same plank of wood the TT is spinning is the worst case scenario I can think of.
uh dude, a tt with pitch control is the best kind
So that is why high end TTs have none :)
Sure dude.
