Huge issue in the hardcore scene. Not to mention if you have any sort of success you’re met with being called a “normie”.
Gatekeepers are most often jealous losers.

This is why I respect you as much as I do. I don't always agree with everything you say (I do here) but, you're always authentic. Authenticity is the punkest thing there is in my world.

Was a huge gatekeeper/elitest years back. I’m actually happier since I broke out of that. Really the only genre I can’t listen to is most country. There’s a few songs here and there that I like but it just doesn’t flow with me.

Lots of pop music I don't like but lots of pop music that I absolutely love. That's the cool thing about giving everything a chance - you'll find stuff you like where you maybe wouldn't have expected to

On the hating genres young women like. I think it comes down to anger that the women don't like the genre they like, and because they make it their personality, the women don't like them and so they take it personally. I used to be in this line of thinking. More so, though, against everyone, because I am actually friends with women. I hated people who like pop because I was under the mindset it was trash. But the gatekeepers eventually got to me and I realized pop is actually quite good and alot of the stuff I was told was good, was mid or even bad. If something is popular, usually there is a reason for that.

I was one of those "born in the wrong generation" type kids born mid nineties grew up listening to 60's and 70's music with my family.
My music taste leans towards heavier or guitar lead music. Strange dark sounds. This could be that I am chasing nostalgia. I think young ears are drawn to poppy music. I was when I was really little. In my preteen years when I first started seeing myself liking more pop-punk and emo music. As I got older the less pop style I would listen to and the more rock I wanted to hear. I lean toward psychedelic and metal now. Maybe it's the way I grew up or my ears are just more drawn to it.
One thing I always tell people that I never disregard all genres because there's always going to be a good song or artist in every genre.

Great message. Contrarian humor can be fun to make a point but being a serious contrarian isn't my jam. Really appreciate your encouragement for those of us who felt insecure about liking things, working to like things to want to fit in. Although, and I think your videos can help with this, we might need another perspective to help appreciate something more.
Hope you and your family are well, Finn! Thanks again!

Solid point. As a guy who hit punk in 79 I never lost my taste for disco, country rock , funk. You just shed the genre junk and go for what works song and groove wise . Yeah I've learned about some cool stuff from you ,Tank, Nick Nocturnal, etc. But it's an add on to what I like not negating the stuff I like.

I have never understood gatekeepers. If another person likes SOME of the stuff you find interesting, that should make them a friend. So what if they like other things. It might expand your tastes and open you up to more appreciation of the larger world.

It is weird cause I grew up listening to pop before I ever did any kind of heavy music.
I play instruments so music is music to me, there isn't just one way to prepare a meal or skin a cat and neither is there just one way to make a song.

The title of this video does not only apply for music, but lifestyle as well (at least from what I see). It seems counterintuitive that the majority tries to become alt. By being “normal”, you are actually in a way being “punk”.

This is rich. You have the nerve to talk down to metal heads about gatekeeping when it's the pop elitist who keep anything underground from being shared on a massive scale. Leave us alone and go bother the Swifties and the Kpop fans. How about Beyonce fans? You find metal kids easy to scold because you're afraid of these pop fans taking your channel down. Admit it.

I wouldnt have put britney, bieber, and rodrigo in the same line of pop. Through time pop has down graded. Its one thing if someone hates all pop and doesnt give it a chance but if the modern pop we hear just sucks its not neccesarily being cool to dislike it theres just a lot more garbage now then we used to have back then

I don't hate pop music as a whole. With that being said, most new pop is horrible. These "artists" can't even come up with a melody or lyrics of their own. For example, "blue" has been ripped off and the copy plays on pop radio every day. I could go on and on. It's pathetic.
