The best thing about Brett Favre was the childlike excitement. Watching him run up and down the field after touchdowns was incredible.

I was only two years old for the '98 season. I don't remember any of it and I can only watch videos and read about that team. However I vividly remember the '09 season. That team was exciting as hell. Watching Brett have some of his best seasons on the tail end of his career in purple and gold was amazing. I would've loved to see him hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year, but watching him beat the Packers twice was a great consolation.

Before I share my story, I'll give you the background..
I was born, raised and live in Central MA..the heart of Patriot Nation, to whom I am not a fan of..never have been..
..in 95, the SB 30 season, I was 11 and watching the NFC Championship with my dad. The Cowboys (who ended up winning to meet Pittsburgh in the Bowl) were playing the Packers and I was absolutely mesmerized by the way Brett Favre was PLAYING..I Emphasize playing cause it was obvious he was having fun. He was making throws nobody else should ever try, he was jumping around like a kid and he wouldn't let his mistakes get the better of him..basically playing backyard football.
Anyways, at halftime, I asked my dad, 'who is that guy playing quarterback for the green team' (road game in Dallas, they were wearing their green home jerseys)
He said, 'that's Brett Favre. He's the new QB for the Packers. Isn't he something else?'
Me, being 11, said 'yup. He's my new favorite player and the Packers are my new favorite team'
Fast forward a year and the Pack was playing New England in SB31..
I was in 6th grade went to a pre k-8 Catholic school with full uniforms..BUT the Friday before SB31, we were allowed to wear anything SB related...
Being from Worcester, MA, in the absolute middle of Pats Nation I was the ONLY KID in the whole school, out of 800 kids, to come to school in full Green and Gold Garb..Favre jersey, the lightning bolt Packers hat from the mid 90s and my Packer starter jacket..needless to say I got hated on for the rest of the school year.
But I've been a cheesehead ever since
..i HATE the Gaytriots..always have, always will..
Favre>Brady....and the ONLY reason needed is that Brady has missed 19 games over his 18 years..Favre didn't miss one till his 19th
321 starts in a row..no other player (not just QB), will ever come close to touching that..
    He is a true ironman

I lived on the MS coast from the age of 14 to age 54, from 1967 till 2006. I remember very well the sensation that was Brett Farve.
I was keeping up with Farve vicariously through a couple of friends that were alumni and were therefor rabid Golden Eagle fans.
Has anyone ever noticed how many of the toughest SOB's were from the State of Mississippi? There were Deacon Jones, Walter Payton, Archie Manning, Jerry Rice, Steve McNair, Ray Guy, Brett Farve, and Eli because he played for Ole Miss, and I have a hunch that Archie, Payton, and Eli still own land up in Sunflower County.
I well remember the scare of his fans when he had the car accident, six weeks before the start of his senior year, in which he lost 30" of his intestines. He missed one game.
He started the second game against a number 1 ranked Alabama, and beat them, on network TV.
I never met Farve, but I was vaguely acquainted with one of his uncles, Drew Farve, a very large badass who used to drive over from the Kiln to Orange Grove to whip up on our local badasses.
I have to evaluate Brett Farve as one of the very Elite quarterbacks to ever play the game. Had he not thrown so many clutch interceptions, we would really be arguing about whether he was the G.O.A.T.

Born and raised in Wisconsin I lived all of this, I was at Lambeau for many of those moments. I was a boo bird when he came back, and I cheered him on when they retired his number... Why? Because I'm a Packer fan first. Brett is the stuff of legend, and we'll love him forever, but when ya grow up around these parts you honor the green and gold before the number on it, and ya hate purple more than ya hate blue. Fans outside of packer nation may not understand but if you've ever walked up the ramp into Lambeau and heard the ghost of Lombardi than you know what I mean.

Everybody in WI got mad at Brett for going to MN... but the question you have to ask is WHY did he have that chip on his shoulder. How was he being treated that we felt urged to play WI twice a year and win?

I only agree because hes my fav qb of all time.. he held the #1 spot in almost every statistical category a qb could hold a spot in at one time except SB Championships, he is the man of the people the IRON MAN, the only NFL player that you could run into at Home Depot or Walmart and feel like hes a long time friend, hes from my state, went to school with my dad and family, and because I just plain love the guy .. but with all that being said if all that werent in my heart, I would have to say Joe Montana because to me he is the #1QB... Even though my heart says Favre my mind says Montana... #1 Montana #2 Favre but i feel so wrong for not saying #1 Favre .. And Im a Saints FAN

I have always believed that Montana and Brady and Bradshaw were the greatest QBs ever due to their 4 rings, but after much thought, Marino, Unitas, and Favre are better for me, and Rodgers and Brees for me will also go down as one of the best. Why? Cause I now come to realize that while Montana, Brady, and Bradshaw are all time greats, they were mostly products of their system. They won those rings because they were great, but also cause of the team they were on. This is why rings don't determine GOATS, even though they do have a significant part in it. Rings are won by great teams, not just QBs. I seriously think that Marino, Unitas, Favre, Brees, and Rodgers are more talented than those QBs, but they failed to win as many rings, cause their supporting cast was not nearly as great as the ones they had. Marino hasn't even won one ring, but he could still be argued as a GOAT considering all he accomplished with little help. If Marino, Favre, Brees, Rodgers, Manning, or Unitas had those teams that Brady, Montana, and Bradshaw had, they would also have won about 4 rings. I am not saying that Brady, or Montana are not the GOAT, but all I am saying is Rings shouldn't determine who the GOAT is

I have to put Rodgers, Montana, Marino, Favre and Brees at the top of my list. Manning could be up there as well, because he had amazing instincts and was a very good QB. Montana does belong in the list though, he proved that the moment he stepped away from the system he was still successful in making a team like KC relevant through sheer talent alone.
There is a legitimate argument that there is a difference between talent and accomplishment.
I wish everyone who says Brady is the greatest QB of all time realized that. He might be the most accomplished, but he is also the perfect game manager. He will by no means be throwing a team on his back to carry them through seasons. Games maybe, but not entire seasons like the people above have done.

Typically because rookies who started their careers as starters seldom find legendary success. Look at Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith. Alex Smith was the first overall pick in 2005, Aaron Rodgers falling to 24th. Aaron spent three years under Favre while Smith started immediately and had a very poor "welcome to the NFL" season. Now who's considered the GOAT, a future hall of famer? Rookie starters don't have the time to adjust, learn the game, and learn how someone else plays it. They're thrown in there with high hopes and not the credentials. Even John Elway started his rookie season off poorly, but he become one of the legends that started his rookie season. It happens. Matthew Stafford, maybe not of legendary caliber, definitely is worth noting for taking the sub-par at best, most likely worse Lions, and turning them into a team and valiant contenders.

Favre is the greatest. Throw it every time. I'm tired of watching guys play safe, fool around and lose then fall back on some QBR while a hundred other people get blamed for losing. Guy are out there running and blocking their balls off and some many quarterbacks slide for 2 on 3rd and 4. I'd rather go down swinging with Favre than lose on points with Rodgers. Rodgers took chances this past year in 2015. Yes there were INTs but there were also Hailmarys to win and 4th and forever 1st downs. Rodgers NEVER had any of that until this year. If he keeps that up then the Packers will be legit again but if not they'll just win all the easy games and go 1 and done as usual unless Joe Webb or Dez Bryant show up.

    • @DougTozier
      @DougTozier 5 лет назад

Funny how nobody but Packer fans say that Favre is the greatest. He was great. Absolutely. His passion for the game and his daring were unmatched. But his record would probably have fallen to Brady if not for a cheap shot to the knee that took Tom out for a season. And then of course there was the Debaclegate. Sorry. Can't say that Favre was greater than Brady, even though he did some things better; he still wasn't the best ever.

As a Wisconsinite who lived through the years when the Packers struggled just to produce a winning season and the playoffs were little more than a pipe dream, Favre lifted us from the dark ages and I'll always be partial to him for that. While his confidence cost us a lot of games via interceptions (yeah, another one of his records), it made for some spectacular moments as well. The guy had as much ability, feel, and intuition as any QB I've ever seen. Over the years he's had some solid receivers in Driver, Freeman, etc... but I often wonder how many records he'd still hold and how many titles he'd have brought home had he been coupled with some HOF receivers. He was something to see.
