I always appreciate a musician's reaction, especially with great information. I can't wait to see you cover this or another Band-Maid song. Kanami, at times, writes songs that challenge the other members. One time, Kanami asked Akane what the fastest beats per minute she could play was, and she replied 180, so she wrote “Black Hole” to challenge Akane with 220 bpm.
Kobato actually means small pidgeon. Kanami's nickname is not really princess at all, it's Mincho, which is like adding "ito" to the end of a Latin name. It means "small one," and it's a shortened version of her Soundcloud screen name "Kanamincho." She will even ask you to call her Mincho after introducing herself on stage.
Many of us saw Band-Maid play “From Now On” live. OMNG! Kanami riffed her ass off. The DB’s matched the BPM’s! So FROM NOW ON, Band-Maid will grow in popularity even faster as their awesome, sold out 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR wrapped up at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26 and at Hong Kong. AND they’re adding the finishing touches for their new album, Epic Narratives, dropping Sept. 25. Order now! The Maids are one of the hardest working supergroups in the business! Their music, their sound, each of the Maids... and the love that permeates their live events is an experience not to be missed. Hope you can catch them LIVE! Thx, JM!
On the nicknames, some are organic, some are purely fan creations. The only pure nickname the band members use is “Mincho” for Kanami, that’s been her nickname since before the band. The rest they mostly refer to each other with the Japanese “chan” affect, which you might recognize from anime if you watch it. So Saiki is Sai-chan, Akane is Ah-chan, Miku is Miku-chan and Misa is Misa-chan. As for organic names that the band acknowledge, Miku as the Small Pigeon is the one that’s straight from them. Miku Kobato is a stage name (I think she’s the only one that uses a stage name) and Kobato directly translates to Small Pigeon. When she speaks she adds “po” and “kurrupo” to the ends of sentences. Those are the Japanese way of making pigeon cooing sounds. Gorilla for Akane I’m less sure of. I’m pretty sure it’s from the band but someone can correct me. I believe they have said she beats those drums like a gorilla and she loves bananas (she will eat them at shows for the crowd) so she plays into it. MISA the Barefoot assassin is a fan made name that is inspired by 2 things from the band. She nearly always plays live shows barefoot and when called out in an interview for not having a maid dress Miku jumped in and called her an assassin maid… which everyone laughed off, but it’s stuck. Saiki as Ice Queen I think needs to go away as it’s because she was very shy at the start of the band and would say very little besides the singing. She’s broken out of that quite a lot in the last several years and has been very fun. Kanami as Princess also needs to go away as she already has a nickname like I said above, but people have their copy paste explanations and I’m going to just agree to disagree with them.
a couple additions / corrections on the nicknames The only one who stated that she is using her real name is Saiki. The others never did say anything about them using pseudonyms. Saiki uses her real firstname and lastname. The others might, but also ... might not ;) "Miku Kobato" is a pseudonym. In her previous (Idol Pop) group she was Mika Noguchi - that might be her real name, but it's not clear... Kanami and Akane both use their real firstnames, but the lastnames for sure are not real. They don't even use the lastnames in interviews anymore afaik. MISA uses a pseudonym - clearly :P It's most likely an abbreviation of her real firstname (short form) in all-caps not using the real name for actors/musicians is pretty much common in Japan - stalking a very big issue and one of the main reasons... "Gorilla" for Akane stems from the band - it's the "she is only half-human, but half-gorilla"-joke. Internally it's likely just a joke about her eating habits. She used to snack all the time during their shows since the beginning, but settled more and more on bananas. They do provide a good amount of energy in a short time, are way healthier than "Snickers" bars / cookies and also way easier to handle than noodle-soup-cups she used to snack during shows in the early days ;) Kanami - "Mincho" / "Kanamincho" is used among the band members. The "princess" thing was a joke-like description of her during the c19-radio-interviews. She is the only one of the band-members who comes from a pretty wealthy family, the youngest daughter and basically "dady's little princess". Completely pure, (good hearted childlike) naive, very well spoken (VERY polite), well behaved and educated. I do remember her posting on twitter from her her bandmaid-account (instead of the private one) to her dad, asking something about groceries/shopping - and him replying in a very sweet dad like manner - she IS basically the little princess in the family :D But I do agree with you here - "Mincho" / "Kanamincho" should be it. "Princess" was never a nickname to begin with... Saiki as "Ice Queen" is just a try on describing "Tsundere" in english, I think. wiki on tsundere: japanese term for a character development process that depicts a character with an initially harsh personality who gradually reveals a warmer, friendlier side over time. The description itself is still true for Saiki. She still needs her time to accustom to new people. Experience on stage did help a lot with performing before an audience, sure. Off-stage, in front of unknown people - nah, she still is. They did say she "mellowed down" due to her hanging out with MISA a lot over the years though - and MISA is the nicest person they know... "Kobato" does not directly translate to anything. The "pigeon" thing is a play on words. "Hato" means "Pigeon" or "Dove". English is one the few languages where a distinction between pigeons and doves is made - in most other languages one word means both - the "white clean" ones and the "flying rats" ones. The prefix "Ko" is used to hint at something as being "smaller" / "cuter" / "petite". "Ko-Bato" spoken sounds like or can be misheard as "Ko-hato" - the "b" sounds more like a "bh"... so "Ko-bhato" -> "Little Pidgeon". But all in all - I think it was Mikus way of bringing / introducing a kind of mascot into the "lore of the band". And likely - she meant the pretty white ones XD "Band-Maid" is a band created specifically for japanese audiences, it just happened to get a lot of overseas fans - which is unusual for japanese bands. They just rolled with it
@@w.b.562 The band actually called her "princess" during an interview and thats where it began. People tried to give her a nickname "tsunami" but she asked people not to do that (because of the disaster Japan had) so we continued to refer to her as princess...for many years....and it stuck. So yes, she has been called princess for many years.
Over 6 and a half minutes before you got to the music video. I'm 66 yrs old. I don't have that much time to futz around. Thanks for reacting to BandMaid. I hope your channel grows. Your comments were cogent and appropriate. You picked up on a lot of details some gloss over. 'Others have done a great explanation of names here in the comments.
Great to get your thoughts on one of my favourite instrumentals. They have a new album ("Epic Narratives") out today, so you might get less traffic because their fans are a bit distracted with that, but I can never get too much of/about this one. I'd definitely like to hear you have a go at it. I listened to your "Bring Me to Life" cover. I'm no drummer so can't analyse it, but it sounded great to me. I can't let a mention of a cover of that song pass without mentioning Wagakki Band's fantastic version, with Amy Lee as a guest vocalist. Another Japanese band, but they blend in traditional Japanese instruments. Haha, yes, some fans get a bit carried away in the comments. Some things that come from the band joking around on stage (e.g. the drummer being likened to a gorilla). Some things that are purely what a few fans like to say (e.g. "ice queen"), which is fine if they want to do that, but personally I'm here for the music.
I don't know if you've reviewed the video before but Manners/Blackhole is a good one. I think Akane's drumming in Black Hole is the cover challenge you're looking for.
Miku Kibato: Kobato means small pigeon in Japanese, and Miku actually refers to herself as a small pigeon both in Japanese and English. Kanami: She is not called princess within the band or by most fans. Her usual nickname, actually pre-dating the band, is "Mincho" or "Kanamincho." Akane: Gorilla is correct, although her fellow bandmates often call her A-chan (Ah-chan). She does refer to herself as a gorilla and frequently eats bananas on stage. Saiki: Ice Queen has never been a thing within the band. Sai-chan or Sensei are the correct nucknames for her. Ice Queen was a name some fans tried to give her due to the "tsundere" character she portrayed early in her career (she's naturally extremely shy). As she has become more comfortable in her role, that character has been dropped and she's actually quite personable. MISA: within the band, as far as I kniw shes just MISA (possibly Misa-chan, but don't hold me to that). Barefoot Assassin comes from her outfit being described as an "assassin maid" outfit in a 2016 (?) interview. The show's host asked why MISA was the only one without a maid outfit. Miku replied that it's an assassin maid outfit. BTW, she's also extremely shy, although she has come out of her shell a bit in recent years. She also usually plays barefoot, hence the "barefoot" in barefoot assassin.

You actually did quite well on your pronunciation. 👍🏽 The background lore is deep and fascinating. The nicknames have actually originated from the Maids themselves, believe it or not. Organically. For example, MISA as the Barefoot Assassin is rooted in a comment during a group interview. The hosts were asking why MISA’s outfit was so unlike a maid. Miku jumped to her defense, saying, “She is assassin maid, po!” Given MISA’s barefoot nature on stage…the name was coined. Much about this band is unusual and unique. As you’ve seen in this performance of “From Now On,” the Maids are musicians and composers and performers. The extra layer of fun and legends makes it even better!

Me too man. Exactly the sweet spot for me. What did you think about Akane getting away from her patterns and basically playing a duet with the lead guitar (Kanami) during several passages? You hear it a lot in jazz but not much in rock. I love it. The lead guitar is the songwriter. And the drummer is her best friend who she's played with from before Band Maid. You can see their relationship when they look at each other on stage. (I've seen them live in a small hall.)
Her last name, Kobato, means Little Pigeon. In Japan pigeons don't Coo, they Kruppo, so she ends her sentences with Po. For their recent April Fool's Day prank it was Miku Goes Solo as Cluppo. You should check that out as well as their other prank, BAND-MAID becomes BAND-MAIKO. Your last pronounciation was correct. A-ka-ne Hi-ro-se. She was originally The Beast.
