Lenovo Flex 5 14" 4500u sketch test with packed in AES pen

- With the problems I experienced with Dell dual proyocol pen, I tried using packed in AES Lenovo pen with the Flex 5 14" 4500u. Much better experience and smoother pen action.
Also having it on landscape is better lol
The original amazon listing for $600 is gone until Lenovo restocks. You can find 3rd party sellers upselling it for around $800 atm (still worth the price).

BTW I have nothing to do with above link. It's just the cheapest Prime listing i found.
23 minutes of a guy making sketches that look better than your illustrations that take hours in mere minutes. I don't get it.

I've improved massively in the last few months but Im still way off because of lacking time to practice. I currently struggle with confident shapes and poses, long flowing lines, general clutter, and pretty boring composition, among other smaller problems.
Thanks a lot for posting this video. It means more than you know!

Well, this is nice, but when doing line tests, it's important to show different speeds of strokes. Not everyone uses fast strokes so drawing lines slowly in addition to what you're doing can give slower stroke users an idea of how it would perform for them.
You can see me do slow diagonal stroke at thd very beginning. Its not great at it like all AES and MPP digitizers. If you need to go really slow your realistic options are Wacon EMR or Apple Pencil.
your art is great!
You are too kind
Me gustó tu video!! Gracias por la traducción y tu tiempo. Saludos desde Argentina
Hello! Are you using a screen protector when drawing?
I would not recommend using a screen protector on a convertible laptops, especially since that affects the touch sensitivity on the screen. I've personally faced issues like that, while the touch interface have been rather smooth once the screen protector has been removed.
@@rupamhalder7957 but did it cause any damage on the screen or like scratches or noticable damage?
@@raq14 No the pens are soft and meant to be used on the screen
Thanks for the test. Most reviews out there miss the review this feature of 2 in 1 laptops (Drawing experiences). I looking for my first 2 in 1 laptop this is very helpful.
I choosing between Lenovo Flex 5 and HP Envy x360 13-ay00, Have you ever use HP pen by any chance? and how it compare to Lenovo pen. Thank you
Whether HP or Lenovo, AES 2.0 pens will behave the same. Same goes for MPP 1.8 pens. Just decide between AES and MPP device then on price.
@@Shogmaster Between AES 1.0 vs MPP 2.0, which would you recommend for sketching?
What a drawing software do you use?
change your smoke detector battery m8
Would you pick this laptop for digital art and media consumption or an other laptop without touch screen AND purchasing a graphic tablet without a screen ?
If you care less about portability, the drawing tablet is a good way to go. You can get a cheaper, lower spec laptop since even low-end hardware can handle drawing programs with ease.
Currently looking for my first 2 in 1 laptop for work and taking notes on the go. I'm from France and options are pretty limited here. The Lenovo Flex 5 14 is one of those. I know the video is more about drawing but does AES, MPP and EMR matter a lot when it comes to note taking?
It does not. A better penabled screen only matters if you are trying to create digital art.

Cool video! What application are you using to make these drawings?
Thank you very much for making this video. I'm looking for a portable computer and was wondering if I should just get a laptop and a regular pen graphic tablet (no-display) or a laptop with a touchscreen and a pen like this one. Would you say this is enough for lighter professional projects?
This unit has 8 real Ryzen 2nd gen cores clocked at 4GHz. It will do whatever you throw at it except for high end AAA gaming. The Radeon GPU ain't too bad either even beating out discrete ones like Radeon 540 in the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro. So moderate gaming is also doable.
But for content creation tasks, this thing will be more than powerful enough. Only caveat is that the LCS is not wide gamut so you need to check the colors with external monitor.
@@Shogmaster Thank you for the information! The screen gamut was another thing I was wondering about and you answered that too. I appreciate it!
Bought one two days ago, pretty bad palm rejection on toonboom softwares, krita doesn't even work if palm touches the screen. Also the pressure sensitivity is pretty low.
Im hoping to get this for art on the go and i use krita, how has it treated you? Like would you say this is a good thing to get for artwork using krita? Hope you don't mind me asking
@@mediocreme7798 I would not recommend for krita. My palm keeps drawing lines, the pen sensitivity isn't great for fine art work either. You can turn off the touchscreen function and use krita but only for basic drawing. If you have very detailed fine line work and shading it might not be the best choice.
For car design students would you recommend HP ENVY x360 15" Ryzen5 with its HP Tilt Pen 2.0 or the Lenovo Flex 5 14" Ryzen7 with its 'digital pen' which is a slightly updated version of the active pen you are testing?
From what I've seen in tons of videos, Lenovo seems to offer better drawing experience.
Is this laptop good for a professional artist?
Months later here is a question. Does the flex 5 support AES 2.0?
did you ever figure this out?
Always nice to see you sketching, not your typical youtube scribbles, I can feel the quality. P.S. What do you do with your computer if 16 GB RAM is not enough :D I rarely use more than half of my 16 GB memory. And my iPad I think has 4GB RAM, it's plenty for sketching, though I do wish sometimes I could use it with desktop software like Zbrush, and as nice as Procreate is, I feel like brush engine is not as good as Clip Studio Paint, just love design pencil or whatever it's called in CSP, but I'm not paying damn subscription for Clip studio, hate subscriptions. Art Studio Pro is probably the best alternative, pencil doesn't feel as good as CSP, but it's close, and better than Procreate. Only wish UI was as good as Procreate, all other apps feel less polished and less comfortable to just jump in and sketch.
Thx. I do enjoy getting to do a bit more involved sketch on video. The oroblem is sometimes I get too sucked into the sketching and the video gets even longer...
The only reason I needed more than 16GB was for a print project that was oversized print with high enough dpi to start paging my disc even at 16GB. The way we were constructing it was with lots of layers that were complex enough to get the file size really big. 99.9% of the time 16GB is more than enough.
I hear you on app subs. One of the reaons I love CSP on Windows is its so affordable and being one time paid app. Although, I might comtemplate paying a sub for CSP if they brought it out for Android. lol
Hi, thabks for your video. I recently bought this computer, but I find it hard to draw smoothly straight on the screen. Do you think it's worth getting a drawing tablet, or is it pretty much the same? Thanks
Really love your line work! Can I know does the pen support tilt brush?
Thanks you are very kind.
AFAICT the pen lacks tilt, or more correctly, the digitizer board lacks firmware to receive tilt data from pen. I say this because I also tried using Dell AES 2.0 pen with tilt but can't seems to get any brush to recognize tilt.
@@Shogmaster thanks for your respond. It really hard to find information about Lenovo 2 in 1 laptop which the one that support tilt for the pen. They didn't advertise it like Microsoft do with their Surface product.

For the pen, did you use a lenovo active pen? And if so is it the active pen or the active pen 2? I currently have the lenovo flex 5 and is curious if the active pen is good enough for drawing, thanks

Did u drop the pen nib first? Try reseating thd nib. The pen might be damaged if it continues after reseating the nib.
Does this pen only work on Lenovo products or any AES device? I'm planning to match this up with a ConceptD 3 Ezel.
Do you have any reviews on some good 9 VOLT BATTERIES????? Asking for a friend of course
Have you been able to get any hands on time with the HP Zbook X2 G4? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
I chose Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 15" over the HP ZBook X2 for my personal machine because even though both were using similar hardware (Wacom EMR pen, Core i7 8550U etc.) I wanted bigger screen size over resolution (1080p is fine for that size), and the cost for Notebook 9 Pro was way better (1250 vs 2K).
If u can score ZBook X2 for decent price, go for it but keep in mind that Notebook 9 Pro replacenent is only 1600 brand new at Best Buy (Galaxy Flex 15.6).
@@Shogmaster Hey do you recommend Smasung Notebook Pro or the Samsung flex?
@@arianadourre if you haven't made a choice yet, they're basically the same device, but one has a faster processeor and slower graphics - while the other has faster graphics but a slower processor. Ideally, you will want to wait till February and buy the Galaxy Book Flex 2 since it should have the best of both worlds - and the warranty will be active. I bought the Notebook 9 Pro for $550, but the hinge eventually got jammed on nothing ( Samsung hinges are hit or miss)- i still draw on it, but since it's not under warranty, I'll be replacing it soon

What software are you using for me I'm using krita. What is the best with this device. Also the pen I've been using is the Bamboo pen. My experience with this software could be way better but then again I'm new to digital art
Krita is good but Clip Studio Paint is what I use. As for pen, all AES pen have the same load sensor so as long as the frequency is compatible, its fine.
this laptop looks like the best poormans tool. I see that pen works fine. Could definitly make money on this. However i still do not see this model in europe. How bamboo ink pens work on this? You did not said much about iaf.
If you get the original Bamboo Ink that only works on AES then it should be OK. I would avoid the latter Bamboo Ink that works on AES and MPP ( Surface).
IAF is wholly determined by the pen. The packed in pen has the same 1 gram IAF as other Wacom pens as long as you use the hard plastic nib.

Hi I have a flexbook 5 and my pen is not sensitive like that, it doesn't taper at the end. Is it the software you are using, the drivers, or could my device be faulty? Thanks!
Most software now days will give you option to use Microsoft/Windows tablet driver. If it doesn't, you need to install Wintab driver. Make sure your software is using Microsoft driver nuilt in to Windows. Check preferences under "tablet" or something equivalent to that in the software settings.
