  • A detailed step by step of how to break down, clean, service, and reassemble a vintage fly reel. For this example I used a 1950s Hardy Perfect 3 7/8 fly reel.
    The steps covered
    - Break down the reel as much as possible
    - Clean and loose dirt, oil, ext
    - Soak in a 1 part Vinegar 4 parts water solution
(Soak for 10-15min sessions, removing after each session to clean)
    - Quick soak in an EXTREMELY dilute dish soap solution
    - Rinse well with cold water
    - Let it sit over night to air dry
    - Reassemble and oil as needed

I would'nt bother with the water and vinegar. The service team at Hardys Alnwick told me to first use WD40 on the whole reel and then clean off with lint free cloth. Once all the old grease and gunk is gone wash with hot water and washing up liquid, then wash again with hot water under the tap. Dry off with lint free cloth and leave to dry in warm room overnight. Next day use oil on screw thread, check springs, pawls and handle, then grease + oil on spindle, grease on spindle head and check wheel. Put reel back together and wipe over with oily cloth....Job done !

I've heard that WD40 can really be tough on old reels. While this was an enamel reel in the video, I use the same process on my leaded Hardy reels (where i would never used WD40). I'd rather take the extra time and be careful on some of these older more valuable reels.

@@KevinHospodar Vinegar is an acid. I've used WD-40 to clean all kinds of reels including early vintage for decades. I've never had damage as a result, but I rinse with water and Dove detergent before re-lubing.

That's some minimalist intervention there..... Gone are the days of dropping all the parts in a tub of petrol ?

With the water soak, wouldn't that be a potential for rust? Just curious

Good stuff. I have a hardy perfect 2 3/4 reel, my handle for retrieving the line has come off. Do you know where I can get replacement parts for it. I emailed Hardy brothers Ltd about 3 months ago and they never got back to me. I'd like to get it repaired and ready to go for the spring fishing season. Any ideas???

I actually email Hardy again and they replied right away, I'm hopeful to hear from them this coming week. If I don't I will take your advice and contact Bill. Thanks
PS. It is a 3 3/4" The Perfect" reel from the early 1960's.... It has landed a 55 lb and a 48 lb Atlantic Salmon by my Grandfather. He was quit the fly fisherman and could put out all his casting line with ease....

Is vinegar bath safe for leaded variants?

    • @KevinHospodar
      @KevinHospodar  2 года назад +1

yes - the same steps I followed can be used on leaded reels. You just need to be careful with drying/scrubbing/wiping not to use abrasive materials or too much pressure where the leading is being worn off/removed

@@sky2k316 Your choice of line/running line makes a difference. I use mono line with shooting heads, so that affords me some space on my reels. The 3 7/8 (of this vintage) have more "trout" appropriate pawls and springs, but have been fine for me with Greats Lakes steelhead
