But it wasn't one shot - it was dozens of shots with invisible cuts. One could ask why, when you were watching it, were you not engrossed in the subject of the film rather than the method of the film production?
there must be muliple cuts.. impossible to do.. first u can not attach those big cams to another rigs while shooting. But never the less, its amazingly well done.. also capturing the sound of the actors and leave out the sound of the whole crew behind, is magic peace of edit..
Making any regular movie much take so much time but even a movie like Avengers: Endgame could not compete with this. I’m absolutely blown away by the amount of work this must have taken and it was such an interesting thing to make it seem like one shot because you really do feel immersed; as if you’re on the mission with Schofield and Blake.
I 💯 into war movies. I’m a 23 year old woman. (Not that it matters). Fury Hacksaw ridge Dunkirk This^^ 12 strong War horse They are just some of my favourites

Saving private Ryan’s beach scene is by far the best moment in all war movie history. For that it’s #1 I love 1917 Dunkirk Fury Warhorse Hacksaw ridge American sniper Schindlers list
just TRY band of brothers man, it's not 1 single movie and it's a mini series so you can watch it over time. It's one of the most AMAZING works of film i've ever seen.
Years later and I'm still thinking about this movie. It's so immersive from start to end, and while it looks like it was a lot of work to make that happen, I'm so glad they made it this way because the result is something very special. Definitely in my top 10.
It’s rare to say something is “one of the greatest films of all time” in a year as recent as 2019 1917 is one of the best movies ever, and the style it is shot is the closest anyone has ever come to detailing an accurate war story in real time
I really felt immersed when I watched 1917. It's a masterpiece! From the beginning, I was thinking what if you were Schofield who just so happened to be next to Blake when he was called. I mean I don't think the two really knew each other until the story kept moving. It was quite random that the two were put together, how they really connected, and I love both characters for that.
Nicole Lawless it does! but i think it’s really great at the same time. you’re on the brink of legality and reaching the end of childhood. there but not quite. also the thing about young men in the war, very true. so many of them were so young and idealistic too, much like blake in 1917. did you know dean envisioned him as being 18??? that’s crazy
All these people who watched it second time and there after say they noticed where the clips joined together. Utter crap! I’ve watched it 6 times now, it’s still seamless can’t figure out where they edited the clips. Apart from day to night scene. Amazing!
A lot of them aren't hard to catch, every time someone or something passes in front of the camera that's a cut. Also several cuts are made when the camera moves suddenly and gets blurry. It's still really well made and feels like there's no cuts, but they're not super hard to catch if you're looking for them.
This is the most Immersive bit of Cinema story telling I have ever seen....It's just amazing, you just feel you're on the Battlefield and in the Trenches with these guys....
Cumberbatch's character had enormous emotional momentum, and was able to pull that back ONLY because the general's letter had been protected in the boy's medal tin.
The props were amazing they are not CGI. I hope this kind of movies will get the traction it deserves. Very different compared to recent hollywood movies.
stunning directing - but when making a trench scene, build a circular one and have slotable scenery working behind the camera - then there's no need to time the lenght with the dialogue ....... a mile long trench - a needless waste..... but again STUNNING film making....
thats the only cgi effect.. there were a lot of cuts.. but very proper done.. most people forget the sound, its magic they also cut out the sound of the crew behind..footsteps etc..
Just watched 1917. The one-take gimmick is just that. It gets in the way of great film making. It dominates the film and distracts from the narrative. The lack of close-ups, still frames, counter cutting, choice of lenses other than 40mm, aerials, reaction shots all depletes the toolbox of film-makers tricks to build pace, focus, pathos, motivation. This is a shallow film that is an opportunity missed. Sam Mendes is not a script writer - and it shows. His co-writer seems not to add any finesse. In the hands of a pro script writer this could have been a project were the words matched the glorious images. The lack of authentic locations shows too... Salisbury plain, a pseudo industrial city (in Surrey), a dry dock, a raging gorge and waterfall... all within 4 hours walk of each other? And an enemy of 4 Germans. This whole project lacked credibility.
For the rest of us plebs that didn't notice any of the above: We love it! I haven't formally studied film so I wouldn't know what opportunities were missed, and yeah, it probably is a shallow film that missed the chance to have lasted many decades of study instead, especially with geographical inaccuracies. But to me, the average movie-goer, the one-take gimmick didn't distract at all. In fact, for me, it greatly enhanced the story and characters. By making it all one take (with editing shots together, of course), as the movie went on longer and longer, I grew more and more attached to Schofield, fully immersed in every scene, as though I had travelled all those miles right alongside him. Balanced with a few establishing shots, the "bad" camera shots are what you'd expect from the POV of someone in the thick of it. I felt the right amount of confusion and disorientation without getting taken out of the scene or distracted. So yeah, the one-take gimmick is a gimmick, but, like amnesia or a main villain, it's a gimmick that's well-utilized for those that accept it.
Every 15 minutes of watching this movie I would ask “This still a one shot?”
Josiah Martin Same here!
34 cuts, invisible. But still amazing tho

This is one of those movies you wonder how on Earth people were this smart and creative- never EVER would have thought of this
