As a kid I would have wanted the tiny arcade as something for my dolls or plushies to “play.” Just like how my portable DVD player spent its off season as Barbie’s flatscreen.
The Keychains are probably for backpacks. Like when I was a kid, some of us would have things attached to our backpacks like cheap stuffed animals or novelty electronics. My sister had a miniature guitar it would play a 5 second song. One kid I knew had a minature Bop-It. They added flair to your backpack and I imagine adults or teens are doing the same thing with their backpacks.
These are the types of toys you would get as a souvenir on a roadtrip and you’d play when you’re stuck in a car and your portable console ran out of battery.
i can agree, i have my 4” nintendo action figures “playing” them right now, with my larger basic fun toys as a playset for my ninja turtles (that i got solely for the display until i can arrange a stop motion setup with them)
Fun fact about these! The same circuit board for one game actually includes code for *four* games - they just wire different “cabinets” to a different contact on the board. Which *means*, that as an intermediate level soldering project, you can get rid of that existing contact, connect four wires between the different game contacts and the different directions of the D-pad, and make different games boot up by pressing different directions whilst flipping the on-switch.
@@cosmicjenny4508I had one that broke a while ago and ive just started to learn how to code in html do you think I could extract the data some how and reprogram it to work on my computer because I would love to port space invaders to my website
4:38 I am pretty sure the keychain is for backpacks or purses rather than keys honestly. People do take little backpacks to cons and such so it could be a nerd fashion thing. Still a bit large though.
Some random thing I always thought about is if you somehow used the Ant-Man technology to grow them to normal cabnit size and get an entire arcade room of these for less than $100
i got an og pacman one that i chained to my backpack as a decoration, i usually dont play it but it does attract attention to my friends and it can entertain them for like 10 minutes lol, it definitely is a cool little conversation piece
I have a few of these Tiny Arcade units in my desk drawer at work. I work in learning support at a school, and when a student comes in overwhelmed with anxiety over their exams or assignment deadlines, or if they’re just in a heightened state due to their ASD or ADHD, I bring out one of these units for them to play on. It takes their mind off their anxiety while I talk them through whatever the issue is that’s got them freaking out.
Bought ones like that but 2-3x bigger through Walmart around 2017 and they worked really great! I wouldn't want to play a full session on them but they were great for my desk at work. Perfect for the novelty, especially since it had Mortal Kombat!
Yeah. The screw is kind of a pain. I think it's some sort of safety regulation. The idea is that anything that could be classified as a toy needs to have a battery compartment that's secured with a screw to keep children from eating the delicious batteries inside. I don't mind the MyArcade cabs too much. They're cute novelties, but I mostly just line them up and display them with 1/12 scale action figures.
The Space Invaders My Arcade is actually really cool, it mimics the original arcade machine and projects the sprites and a real 3D back ground, and the controls feel really nice
I remember one year for christmas, my mom was asking my sister and I for some stocking stuffer ideas. This was one of them I suggested. It was a surprise hit. I got dig dug and my sister got galaga. Made for a fun little hour on Christmas.
I just got back from work(Cracker Barrel) and at the host stand they put out these vr games, Atari set, and these mini arcades. One of the vr games was the fishing vr game Scott and the guys played earlier this year. I almost bought it.
A lot of those have multiple games on the same board; You can access them by desoldering jumpers on the board. I modded a Ms. Pac Man tiny arcade to play Pac Man, Ms. Pac man, Galaxian and Space Invaders. (the original four machines released) I wired the stick to the jumper pads with a ribbon cable, so you hold a direction on the stick and turn the power switch on and it boots into the corresponding game. turning it on without holding the stick in any direction and it boots into a factory test screen. Pretty rad.
I got eye strain just watching this video. I couldn't imagine actually playing these tiny machines. You'll be needing to get contacts within 5 minutes of playing them!
I took the insides of my tiny arcade and shoved them into the casing of a cheap smart watch. _Now I can awkwardly play games on my wrist!_ _But don't ask me what time it is. I don't know._ 😂
I got a couple of these (Including the DDR one) just so I could pose my figmas and friends with them. Now I can have "THAT" Woody recreating the Joysticks poster.
I love these little guys, obviously they're not going to compare to a real authentic arcade game experience but it's just fun have on your desk or in your collection. I got a couple that I keep in the glovebox in my car and every once in a while I pull one out and play with it if I'm waiting to pick somebody up or stuck in traffic or something
Fun fact: 4 games are actually installed in 1 unit. Pac-man, Ms. Pac-man, Galaxian, and Space Invaders can all be modded to play all 4 games. Glen's Retro Show delves deeper into how to do the mod.
Speaking of cost cutting measures, some of them even have the same internals, and the other games are already inside and playable! All you need to do is to jump some contact points inside upon boot and different games will load up! I modified mine so that different games boot depending on which direction the joystick is held when you turn it on.
The thing about the tabletop model is that the controls aren't even on the correct side. They're supposed to be on the shorter end, and the screen as a result would be rotated in a way to fill the table more properly. So they even messed that up.
These Tiny Arcades are even worse than Tiger Electronics LCD handhelds! Also the MyArcade ones are actually decent for what they are, they’re reasonably priced for 20 bucks, their controls are playable for their size! I went to Kohls last week and they started selling them for Christmas season, they got Pac Man, Burgertime, Dig Dug, Galaga, and even Street Fighter! They’re fine for sharing with friends at work, even James Rolfe and Bootsy have praised them several years ago as playable mini arcades!
I've got a few of these Tiny Arcade systems, as well as a mix of other mini arcade systems from other companies. I have the Hello Kitty x Pac-Man Tiny Arcade system, which is apparently one of the rarest Tiny Arcade systems that gets few listings secondhand. That one is basically the same kind of version of Pac-Man Tiny Arcade, but with Hello Kitty-themed mazes. The Arcade Classics line of mini systems had some interesting and unique titles available, which were mostly at Walmart save for stuff like Pac-Man and Tetris. Arcade Classics had some fairly unique games like Rampage, Joust, Mortal Kombat with a pretty janky control layout that makes combos and fatalities hard to pull off, and even a Fix-It Felix Jr. system based on the game in the Wreck-It Ralph movies. The Fix-It Felix one is definitely my favorite with it being more of an original game to bring to these mini systems that fits the theme.
The thing that's missing from the tiny Atari is a tiny mom vacuuming between the console and the TV. Also, does the wood panel and shag carpet packaging smell like stale cigarettes?
The ones that I always find funny are the street fighter 2 mini arcades. I can't imagine it being comfortable to play a fighting game on suck a small device.
I found that these things scaled alright with, of all things, Playmobil figures. Maybe not to an actual machine, but at minimum to an Arcade1Up dealio.
i have a couple of these tiny arcades, but one series you didnt mention are the Basic Fun series of table top arcades, they are similar to the My arcade line up in size. i collected the heck out of them because they had Fix if Felix as a unit. i even have a DDR and skeeball i like them so much i made a diorama for the top of my display shelf with fake industrial heat duct work. i went to spencers for a black light poster i cut into a carpet and added some mini black lights. i also found lots of accessories in the doll house crafts at Michaels that were roughly scale such as one of those robotic psycic booths, a shooting gallery, snacks and beverages, phones, barrels for on top of Donkey Kong etc. i put a digital picture frame up on the wall with a slide show of gaming images and fake leader boards. still not complete though, i got stuck on trying to make a gift counter for tickets. i got prizes, no clue how to make a display case to put them in lol. the only gripe i have is the units auto turn off after a few seconds, so i cant turn them all on just for the ambiance of all the attract modes running
I still remember playing space invaders on a clunky computer thing with cassettes for the games. It had that, hangman, and some adventure game that might have been similar to kings quest but I’m sure it wasn’t. Really wish I had the hindsight to ask if I could have it since it literally built up dust and was eventually tossed because no one used computers in that house. They still used a typewriter when I last visited and didn’t really get used to using tech until smartphones.
