    the biggest thing i wish for when it comes to the "only following people online that make you feel good" is for social media sites to stop showing me things on my feed that i haven't subsribed to. it is so incredibly exhausting to lose track of how much "stuff" there is constantly when half of it is algorithmically created content instead of the one i already filtered for myself

      It's cute that you both follow your mom's cleaning schedule. My kids declutter the way I taught them. My adult son still declutters when he moves and before Christmas (to make room for new toys!) He also uses the method I taught him of having three boxes as he goes through things (keep, give away, throw away). All three of my kids are still minimalists, like me ☺️

  • @thatjillgirl
    @thatjillgirl 2 года назад +162

    One of the best decluttering tips I've picked up is along the lines of the "drop zone." Basically, if you notice that there's some type of thing that you tend to put in a pile somewhere, then create an actual storage space for that thing as close to that spot as usual. Something to hang clothes on should be close to where you tend to dump them in a pile. Something to put your mail in (or shred it if applicable) should be close to where you tend to dump your mail in a pile. Whatever piles of stuff you tend to make in your natural state, put some storage solution right there at the pile site. That way it takes very little effort from tired and apathetic you to place things in some sort of way that at least looks like it was by design as opposed to a random lazy pile. It makes a difference psychologically, even if you still have to occasionally clear out your storage basket or whatever it is.
    And yes on the cooking extra food! I love food. I love when I can make great, delicious food. But the actual making of the food is a time consuming chore for me, not a fun hobby. I have absolutely no desire to prepare a new meal every single day, especially on days when I work a closing shift. My husband and I double almost every recipe we make so that we will have leftovers to reheat for lunches or dinners later. It cuts the overall time spent on making meals in half, and it saves you money because you're less likely to order takeout or whatever on those days when you don't have the energy to cook.

    Definitely manage your passwords to avoid unwelcome financial or privacy disruptions, and have a plan to change them periodically.
    There are many different phone/internet providers out there; do the research and choose something that fits your needs and budget.
    For cooking hacks: I know my skills and my shopping habits, so I prepare food in batches that suits that. Not everything is a finished dish, but is a time-consuming prepped ingredient ready to add for a quick meal when time is tight. My freezer is stocked with ziploc bags of bechamel sauce, duxelle, cooked beans, browned minced meats with onions, etc. Most sturdy veggies in my fridge are washed and chopped, ready to use within 3-5 days to reduce friction preparing a meal from scratch later in the week.

  • @tenrrsax17

    Yes to the freezer cooking! It's something my mom always did when I was a kid, and now I do it, too. I take it even further, though. I have a big cooking day every six weeks or so, and then we eat off of it. Making dinner is never more complicated than reheating, throwing in the oven, or sticking in the crock pot. I work full time, so does my husband, and we have two busy kids. It's so much easier to just know what's happening for dinner.

    I have another strategy for staying on top of cleaning. I use an app (LogsIt, but I assume there are similar apps) that lets me create tasks and set a frequency. For example, vacuum weekly, mop every 2 weeks, etc. Every time I do the task I log it, and it automatically calculates the next "due date". It lets me tackle cleaning tasks in bite-size chunks, without the rigidity of needing to follow a specific weekly schedule. It also lets me better manage those tasks you don't need to do as often (e.g. wash the windows). I found it removed the pressure of cleaning everything, and my house has been far cleaner since I started doing it a year ago.

    I like the idea of offering alternative plan ideas but feel it's equally important not to get in the habit of making "consolation commitments" to manage people's disappointment. If you're cancelling for reasons other than money, such as overwhelm, it defeats the purpose if you auto accommodate with a consolation commitment.

    My best money habit I’ve come up with is to put a certain amount of money every pay check in a seperate account labelled car. Whenever I need to get a service, pay insurance or buy petrol; it comes out of that account. Sometimes for big repairs I need to take money from savings but never having to worry about affording petrol, even if there’s $3 on my card, is so helpful for my mental health. That being said, if I could get rid of my car I absolutely would but my job and where I live make that impossible.

    Also, creating cleaning lists and assigning certain tasks to different days is so helpful for me. I dedicated one part of my apt to one weekday and I created a list of all the chores I could possibly do in that part. Every morning, I go through the list and check off what I don't need to do or don't feel like doing. I clean for a minimum of 30 mins / day. Even though I don't do everything on the list every week, by having it on the list, I guarantee I do it at least once a month. Doing cleaning in little spurts through the week is so much easier than having one large cleaning session.

    I couldn't imagine cooking every day. My mom has always cooked enough for leftovers (maybe not to be frozen, but definitely enough to last for several days in the fridge). I do the same thing. This is probably why I haven't made the leap to a meal prep service. While it gives a chance to try new things, the "pre-portioned" part also means "little to no leftovers", and that meal will be more expensive than buying the items st the store. You're only paying for the convenience of someone bringing the meal and recipe to you, but that's not much of a benefit for me.

    • @brachak.99
      @brachak.99 2 года назад

      Btw, I knew someone who would buy extra portions of meal kits on order to have leftovers

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley 2 года назад

      @@brachak.99 Yeah, but it's priced at about $20 per meal, which I can make multiple meals off of $20-$30 (multiple, as in, I'll be eating from it for about three to four days). It saves time only in having to buy the ingredients yourself (and possibly wasting what isn't used), so you have to decide what is more important, saving time or saving money. I value money the most and usually use everything I buy, and as I work from home, it's nice to get out and shop sometimes (and my car battery thanks me as I sometimes forget to start it up and then it dies after just two days. The constant jump-starts has now lead to performance issues that I'll have to have looked at ASAP).
      So, just ordering more food with these things isn't exactly a solution for me and my needs and income. They're not a bad option for busy people who have the funds for it, though.

I was in a T-mobile family plan with friends before and the package was a terrible value, and more terrible as my friends moved and left the plan. T-mobile customer service was so bad, there weren’t any transparency on pricing and services (website and on-site locations say 2 different things on the same day). As a tax professional, I don't necessarily recommend filing your taxes early, especially if you're receiving multiple forms of income across multiple 1099s, W-2s, etc. The reason being - LET SOMEONE ELSE FIND THE MISTAKES YOUR 1099 PAYERS MADE. If, for example, you're receiving a 1099-B for capital gains issued due to the sale of stock, and there's an issue with the $ amount reported, or the Payer entered their EIN wrong, or any other of a million clerical errors that can be made - let someone else find that mistake and alert the payer, who will then make a blanket correction and issue a revised 1099 to you BEFORE you file, saving you the trouble of filing an amended return. I wouldn't wait until April 10th to begin, but I wouldn't be the first one out the gate trying to file at the end of January. There's a sweet spot here, and I'd say between now and March 15th is it.

    • @HeronCoyote1234
      @HeronCoyote1234 2 года назад

      Question: you said let someone else find the mistake (like on a 1099). Who goes through stuff to find the mistake before you get the form, and file?

    • @amandaarmstrong3606
      @amandaarmstrong3606 2 года назад +3

      @@HeronCoyote1234 Payers are under deadline to get forms generated and out to payees prior to IRS delivery deadlines; as a result, thorough audits of 1099s take place after forms are initially sent - there is a gap between when the forms must be delivered, and when they must be filed with the IRS. That gap is spent auditing the forms, and awaiting client feedback regarding the 1099, W-2, etc. For example, perhaps Company A was acquired by Company B in 2021. The stockholders of Company A receive a payment at the close of the deal, say in March 2021, and another payment from an escrow release in October 2021. The Payer goofs up and only includes the proceeds from the closing payment event on the 1099s they send to maybe 200 shareholders. Agnes Onhergame sends all her forms to her tax advisor on January 20th, who discovers that her total payment amount doesn't match what's on her 1099. She goes back to the Payer (whomever issued the 1099) to ask about the discrepancy. It's found and corrected, and revised 1099s are sent to all 200 shareholders on, say, February 10th. If you've already filed your taxes at that point and DIDN'T notice the error, then it's not just swapping out one 1099 for a revised 1099 - it's going through the whole rigamarole of filing an entire amended return. Hence, my recommendation that you let the early birds get out there and find the mistakes that inevitably occur, or simply wait a month or two while Payers complete their internal audits, THEN file your taxes!

They were amazed by our house being fairly clean without external help. We just made sure things went back to where they came from and that made a large difference; saved lots of money too!

    I cook nearly everyday. But it's something I really enjoy doing and I also dislike leftovers and reheated food for the most part. There are some things that I'll cook in large amounts (stew, chilli, gumbo, soup, curry) to freeze, but it's not my jam. We've got emergency frozen food and quick prep things, but I've got a lot of dinners that are like 5 ingredients and take a half hour to make.

    I wish I could get everyone in my house on board with having left overs. My roommate likes to eat his "fair share" and if I do put stuff in the fridge for left overs he takes out whatever is left no matter how much is left and eat it all. It ended up negatively effecting me because I would start eating more to make sure I actually got some of the food that was made. He said at one point that left over should be for anyone who wants them, but if *I* have leftovers and he ate all that was allotted of that meal for him I shouldn't be stuck not getting as much because he decided my leftover were his.
    I once got 2 family sized bags of chips one plain wavy kind for dipping and one cheddar sour cream (My favorite) for not dipping. He ate the WHOLE bag of cheddar sour cream in one night. It's so aggravating that he does stuff like that.

    At Woolworth's, (or other 'Five and Dime" stores), we used to be able to buy a package of 7 linen tea towels, for little girls to learn to embroider, (along with floral or animal pillowcases and bureau scarfs), with the day of the week and it's related task and a picture to go with it. Also a set with the dinner for each day too. ie" Monday -laundry and soup, because once you threw the ingredients in the pot and put it on to simmer, it would quietly do itself while you did the clothes, wash, hang outside to dry, bring in and fold and put in each person's room on the foot of their bed, and supper was done and waiting for you basically! Saturday was House cleaning, (and the men and boys did the yard work) and the sacred bath night, (so you were all clean on the outside at least!), for Sunday and we always had home-baked beans, hot dogs and corn bread or baking powder biscuits. If you did laundry on Monday, then Tues was ironing day and possibly mending too.
    Thanks to a clever advertising campaign in the 60's, with Anthony Martinelli of Boston's North End, Wednesday became 'Prince Spaghetti Night'! Sunday was roast chicken or beef, something you could use for leftovers for a lunch or two, and a day of rest and spiritual cleansing and gratitude, and family times, (remember going for a Sunday drive?). frequently the dinner was made ahead and just heated up on Sunday, so that there was a bit more of rest for Mother too, from the daily heavier cooking .Thursdays and Fridays, I can't recall, other than perhaps a beef stew and a running-errands and paper-work day, somewhere along the line!
    It was a simple way of organizing things so they never piled up and became overwhelming, and you had plenty of time for fun along the way and visiting with friends in the afternoon, (AFTER the morning's daily pick up of the house, and kitchen and bathroom (if you had one IN-doors!), was done and dressing in going-out-of-the-house-clothes were put on!) and you took your 'fancy-work' with you to keep your hand gainfully employed while you chatted, for "idle hands are the Devil's workshop"! lol. Ah, good memories!

    I hate hate HATE the drop zone rule! That's my opinion, but I can see how it helps people. I'm big on organization and have gotten rid of all catch-all trays and random hooks. Each item has its respective place in my room that I know i can find it in. My method works similarly to your drop zone method, but I feel like I can never gauge out what I have and how much of it too when it's all tossed inside a tray. For me, everything must be tidy and visible.

    I'm by myself and hate cooking, also leftovers are never appealing to me and usually end up in the trash. I tend to not be able to produce before it spoils either. I looked at my grocery spend, eating out spend, and figured out that doing a meal service would be the best option. Yeah they are pricey but it would save me money in the long run and I'm not wasting food anymore either. Definitely eating better too than the quick grab stuff and takeout I was doing before too.

    And also to add, I'm certified in IT and cybersecurity. Even if Chelsea told the world her high school boyfriend's nickname, it's not like tomorrow somebody is going to up and hack her. They'd have to guess the variation, they'd have to know her email address and/or her username, they'd have to know where she used this password, and, they'd need her phone more than likely to get past the two-factor authentication. Not to mention also possibly needing access to her email inbox for temporary security codes, or even security questions needed after logging into an account that only Chelsea would know the answer to

      Honestly just guessing here, but it's a truly massive country - you need a mobile phone mast within a certain area of the phone in order to get reception, so with a lower population density over a wider area (the UK has a population c. 1/5th the size in a space smaller than Louisiana), the cost of running a network per person is probably higher, especially in more rural areas (more masts, often in more remote areas, with associated costs of running data/electricity to each mast). That probably doesn't account for all the expense (I imagine "because they can get away with it"/"it's normalised" plays a part too) but it's probably where the difference started...
