Haley's parents and her sister have been visiting this past week. She posted an IG story of them jamming at her home with her friends, including Casey on the upright bass.
Casey Abrams, jazz messenger, had taken Haley Reinhart's wandering eye and focused it straight at the pinnacle. Instead of two American Idol contestants standing next to each other, what we got to see was two artists collaborating in a most intimate way, as they dusted off a classic 53-year-old jazz standard and made it relevant to millions of people who had never heard it .before... Bravo!!!
Andre Vaughn I was a huge Jessica fan that season but she almost ruined the song with her inflection at the end of the words fight and night. She's not Aretha nor should she try to be. The rest of the song was brilliant though.
This is it. This is THE best performance in all 15 seasons of Idol. I remember watching it live and just being like... "Holy shit. Did that just happen?"
+Kat MoeMoä yep - way better. American Idol doesn't really get jazz, it's not mainstream enough for them. but my guess - they'll still be around after Idol has been long retired.
More than 10 yrs later and I still cant get over this season. They could have gone with these 2 jazz singers for the finale and gave us the best finale in AI history. But they gave us a snoozefest finale with those 2 country teens.. Never watched AI ever again after this season..
The only reason why Haley didn't win American Idol people is because American Idol permitted "almost unlimited power-voting". Had American Idol permitted only "one vote per individual voting" instead and in which is the only way to host a fair and balanced talent competition, Haley have won in a land slide.
Ohhh!!!!!! Haley and Casey, best duet ever in A.I. Those jazz scats from Haley and Casey were just spot on better than top notch horn players cause their voices are heart and soul!!!
that was the zenith for Idol, what a year of crazy talent; Scotty, Lauren, Haley, i loved them all, but Casey stood out for me for sheer musical genius.
+racketman2u His awful grunts is what stood out to me. Why did he do that? He didn't have to do that. Thanks God he didn't do them when he performed duets with Haley though. No doubt she laid down the law.
The best duet performed on American Idol by a mile, performed by two of the best contestants to ever appear on American Idol ever. Casey was one of the best musicians, but Haley was the best and most talented contestant overall to ever have graced the stage of American Idol in all 15 seasons.
this season had a ton of amount of talents and these two really shone the brightest. They brought jazz into the show, something a majority of Idol contestants couldn't bring to the table
I discovered jazz through this (and Amy Winehouse in parallel) and now I'm listening to the Jazz Composers Orchestra avant-garde abstract jazz and Cecil Taylor. Came a long way, thankful to these guys. I also left a comment here 10 years ago.
not_emerald You can find two separate videos on RUclips of Haley singing Amy's "You Know I'm No Good" with the No Vacancy Orchestra at different venues. Excellently done of course.
Best duet on American Idol in all 15 seasons! Haley is so, so talented. Anyway, she is fixing to bust lose. At midnight tonight I plan to preorder her new album to be released on the 29th and download her next single, which is also the name sake of the album "Better".
My God they are brilliant..such a fantastic duo, such amazing performances. One of the best on AMERICAN IDOL if not the best. So sad they didn't win. Amazing talents
++Space Cowboy It's great watching it now, but wow, it must have been absolutely wonderful if you were following the show regularly every week and then all of a sudden this came out of nowhere and slugged you. My god, I bet you had a job believing you'd actually seen and heard this.
You liked this season? I thought Casey was one of the high points in the show's history -- his save night, audition, exit performance, plus "Why don't you do right?"
So amazing. And how cool is that these two are still performing together? Many have speculated on their 'coupledom'. I know nothing about that but it is clear that they are kindred spirits musically, and I feel like Casey really helped Haley find her true self musically. They are both brilliant and I am so happy I watched that silly talent show when they were on.
+Kim Andrews Because Idol didn't give Haley any backstory, we didn't know she had been the first-ever vocalist for her high school's jazz band or that she had studied jazz at a local college and performed as a vocalist for her professor's jazz trio. This performance then was a revelation. In a post-Idol interview, Haley related she and Casey had been rehearsing "Fever." During a lull, Ray Chew, who was then the music director of American Idol, began playing "Moanin'. Haley started singing along. He was like, "You know this song?" The Idol producers then approached and said they thought "Fever" was too racy for the show. Haley and Ray were like, oh, well, we have this...Oh, Casey!" Casey had played "Moanin'" on the melodica at his audition , but he didn't know the words to the song.
This is my favorite cover of this song. I almost couldn't breathe listening to it that season on idol. What a surprise! Originally, it was a hard bop instrumental - Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers 1958. The Mingus version lost the melody, so I can't listen to it = bebop. Guess I'm more of a hard bop / cool jazz fan. The lyrics were added later.
@HideTheTruthInside btw, at the 5:55 mark of this Idoloonies segment v=_TOGxmvBnc4 Haley talks about how Moanin' came about on the show. If you like Haley and haven't seen the Idoloonies interview before, I recommend watching all five segments.
American Idol 2011 was my favourite season ever!!!!! These two were my favourites, and they were amazing!!! I don't understand how they didn't win ;-; I'm glad that Haley got to the top three, but how could Casey be eliminated TWICE T_T They were truly the best.
@HideTheTruthInside Haley studied jazz vocals for three years in HS and sang with an acapella group, Midnight Blue Vocal Jazz. She joined the school's jazz band her JR yr. They played local clubs in Chicago and won a state contest that gave them the opportunity to play at the Montreux Jazz Fest in Switzerland & the Umbria Jazz Fest in Italy. Haley was enrolled @ Harper College where she took more jazz classes and sang in three different combos. v=GM9fNbzvr58 v=xbEpGOdtn_A
Casey and Haley were the best duo i have ever heard on AI, too bad they didn't win. but in some cases contestants who get vote off they became artists their way and didn't really need help from AI. just ask Jennifer Hudson who won the oscar for dreamgirls, Daughtry who hooked up with his band back home and became famous, and Adam Lambert he's better than that other guy anyday. and still they won either way.
This really is my favorite thing from Idol and this is my favorite season, these 2 were so great and I was also a big fan of James Durbin his rendition of Uprising was amazing as well. But this duet, a league of its own.
Honestly, they were just too talented for that show. They are both true artists. Making them sing covers of cheesy pop songs is like putting a bird in a cage.
Still relieving this after 7 freaking years -- IMO one of the best and diverse batch of contestants there is that year, similar to season 11 (but I felt this season had more "likable" singers to me). Saving Casey at the F11 was worth it just to have had this performance (and Haley's moments with him), IMO.
zjzr08 Great point about saving Casey being worth it just for this duet alone. This was a real once only, one-off moment. nothing like this ever happened on any other Idol show in all its history. I suppose the audience would have thought Casey capable of anything like that, but when Haley ripped it up like that - my god! That would have been a real eye-opener because no background information had been given out about Haley having been into Jazz previousky. All they knew was the chick could rock well. This was something none of the others did, or could do except perhaps Naima. I keep coming back to listen to this. There's a live version at a gig by Haley with Casey and a band of his own that's interesting, and slightly crazy but worth a listen. ruclips.net/video/RU9AfWQZsC4/видео.html
2019 I still come back to this, so good. This season I think was my favorite that I watched Haley, Casey, and James Durbin So good. I think maybe I watched one more season ...maybe....but I cant really remember what happened that season so...maybe not.
@seker7 Loved that video of Haley with Mayfield in his jazz club, New Orleans. Mayfield was astonished at how good she is. He tweeted "Love at first hear".
@HaleyFansDotCom ...Thank you for the info...I kind of figured that Haley had to have had some Jazz in her background because it probably is the hardest to sing. She is so so good when she gets into her Jazz mode...Well, really she is so so good all of the time but she kicks ass with her Jazz!!!
This is the absolute greatest performance that was ever on American Idol. Just brilliant a truly spectacular performance that will probably never be topped. But I'd sure love to see somebody try to be that cool.
Back here in 2024 to relive this performance. This is the best duet I've ever seen.
Right with you. I revisit this duet every so often. So SO good!
Here I am, more than 10 years later and I still think about this performance. Phenomenal
Yes! My favorite!!!
Same! Still gives me goosebumps everytime! Probably the most amazing performance ever on AI
Season 10 was phenomenal. One of the most talented seasons in AI history.

Side note: I love the fact that these two are still good friends who play and sing together all the time.
Until now!

Greatest duet performance EVER on AI.
Actually, the only duet on AI. All others are just 2 soloists taking their turns to sing.
StreetTruckinTitan This was DAMN good.....however it's my second favorite...behind Joshua and Jessica.....
Andre Vaughn I was a huge Jessica fan that season but she almost ruined the song with her inflection at the end of the words fight and night. She's not Aretha nor should she try to be. The rest of the song was brilliant though.

Not true. You're forgetting Haley and Casey's other duet I Feel the Earth Move. They harmonise a lot on that one as well.
I agree - this was a true duet. Not many on idol could do this. Another AI duet I love is Lee Dewyse and Crystal Bowersox, “falling slowly”.
This is it. This is THE best performance in all 15 seasons of Idol. I remember watching it live and just being like... "Holy shit. Did that just happen?"
same, remeber watching it live and just feeling like HOLY SHIT DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?
One of the best duets in TV history, not just American Idol History
They are on a whole different level.
Yeah, definitely. Idol didn’t even deserve these two.
you funny guy you
YESSSSSSS!!!!!
they are better than American idol.
+Kat MoeMoä Yes they are. The problem was all along with the show, was allowing the teenagers to vote.
+Kat MoeMoä yep - way better. American Idol doesn't really get jazz, it's not mainstream enough for them. but my guess - they'll still be around after Idol has been long retired.

i still get goosebumps listening to haley. this is the performance that turned the lightbulb on for her, discovered her style with this performance.
They really should go on tour together and do songs like this! They really shined most when they sang together.
they perform together all the time!
