I can't add too much - so many great comments here already except that I love this album. My late-husband and I used to listen to this (and Communique) around the campfire at Devils Lake, Wisconsin after a day of rock climbing (1980's - 1999). Precious precious memories. Thank for doing this, Harri. Great choice. Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler - a legendary band and an exceptional guitarist. Wish I could see them one more time. Only saw them once, in Milwaukee, during their Brothers in Arms tour. 🎸❤🎸
From 1982, "Love Over Gold", their 4th album, this is a jazz rock tune with a border rock edge. It was the last album to feature drummer, Pick Withers, and demonstrates a musical sophistication, with a stunning mix. The dynamic orchestral backing, even with a xylophone 🎶🎶🎶 is joined by Mark playing several guitars, including 4 Stratocasters of different colours. The thought provoking lyrics are so beautiful. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Terry. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I am a HUGE Dire Straits fan AND I absolutely love the xylaphone! That perfect combination, with added piano and Knopfler's flawless steel guitar... it doesn't get any better!! By far my FAVORITE Dire Straits tune (and that's saying a lot). 🎸❤️🔥
I've said it before but will say it again - best concert of my life was to see the great Stevie Ray Vaughan open up for Dire Straits on their Brothers in Arms tour
@@27thangel23 If you are also from Toronto we may have very well been at the same show ! Someone actually put the audio of it on YT although it is poor sound quality. But they do show the setlists of songs performed that night by both artists
Oh that must have been amazing! I saw the Brothers in Arms tour in Milwaukee but I can't remember who opened for them. I sure think I would have remembered had it been Stevie.
@@CuzKatieSaysSo If you put this in the search bar on this website ( RUclips ) you can get the audio for the Milwaukee show: Dire Straits - 08/02/1985 - Live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Full concert) This was the setlist: Ride Across the River Expresso Love One World Romeo and Juliet Private Investigations Sultans of Swing Why Worry Walk of Life Two Young Lovers Money for Nothing Wild West End Tunnel of Love Brothers in Arms Solid Rock Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero Your show was only a week after mine in Toronto were they did 4 nights in a row from July 26-29, then Aug.1 in St.Paul before your show on Aug 2. I did some research and saw that after playing in Toronto SRV played Rochester Hills on July 31 and then did not play again until Aug 9 in Baltimore. I feel so bad that he didn't play in Milwaukee for you. After looking at a few more sites it looks like there was no opening act for your show.
Check out the Scottish film “Comfort and Joy”, which features a few tracks (some in alternate form) and a few sly lyrical references from this album… plus, it’s a brilliant (and low-key hilarious) film.
This was acualy a vibraphone, the song "Private Investigations" from the same album has a Marimba also played by Mike Mainieri who also played vibraphone on "Why Worry"from the Brothers in arms album
It’s a great album. Obviously “Telegraph Road” and “Private Investigations” are standouts, but the other three deserve attention. “Industrial Disease” is a fun departure from the usual DS style, social commentary brilliantly written. The last song (after this one), “It Never Rains”, features Mark’s most blistering solo guitar work, IMO, a tad angrier in mood which brings out a masterpiece. “Private Dancer” was originally intended for this album, but Mark felt it deserved a female vocal, and Tina obviously nailed it.
There is a more dramatic exceptional UK no.2 single hit PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS from the same album or from Alchemy Live. For me: the album Love Over Gold is "for letting yourself go, for enjoying", Making Movies is for "every mood, for recharging" ... and the debut has this charm "never heard a guitar like this, especially for chilling out, also a bit of explorer nostalgia". You see, I'm not a ranker, I don't want to be one: the right album to the right moment!!!
In my view this is where Dire Straits could be boring. This is for the most part a 2 chord song that goes nowhere. It wasn't until Knopfler went solo that his writing credentials moved up a notch, when he kept his material less drawn out, and especially when he sounded like Dylan, who was a big influence. ruclips.net/video/BvAUQsbKnLI/видео.html
This whole album is terrific. Only 5 songs, most so long that they would never make radio play, so this is a true fan's record.
Yeah, except Private Investigations was a massive hit single in the UK, number two. Extremely odd choice for a single, I agree.
Absolutely a fan album, arguably the best Mark ever played.
This was my child's "lullaby" music. She would snuggle up with me and soon fall asleep... Sweet memories for sure.
❤ nice

IMO, it was game over after Pick left. And I'm a guitar player. 🙂
BTW, Pick also played drums on Dylan's Slow Train Coming, which Harri reviewed.
Very very very underrated album

The xylophone gave this a music box quality
Funny you should mention Private Dancer, it was originally intended for this album.
Love Over Gold is the best album from the dIRE sTRAITS
Mark scored a few movie soundtracks in his day.

Bill Forsyth's masterpiece. If you know, you know. 🙂
Actually, I'm thinking Love Over Gold began as the soundtrack to Comfort and Joy.
The long tracks on this album are very relaxing.

I used to go to sleep by this album. a great one, indeed. 21 in okinawa
Mark is narrating the story. he should not overshadow it.
Terry, this is beautiful. It’s very different from the other DS songs with which I am familiar. Great insights from Harri. Thanks Terry 🌺✌️

Great song
He has done some soundtrack work...he has a very theatrical flare.
Nine movie soundtracks to date, including “The Princess Bride.”
You should watch the films that Mark did the film music for, really worth seeing!
old songs good melodies
though I prefer 'Where do you think you are going ?'
❤🙏❤
"Arlo's song" by Jessie Stewart is one of the best songs ever or Try Saw Black "water tower".
Harry. Check out Kim Mitchell. Lager and Ale.
Bro should have done Sultans of Swing or Money for Nothing. The 80s video of Money for Nothing will definitely get your attention.
If you search HarriBest / Dire Straits you'll get a lot of his reactions
