it never felt like tetris to me other than the playing field being vaguely similar, it feels like 2048 with fruit and physics

I made a clone on steam called Suika Shapes where there are modes with different shapes, including to scale (relative to each other) tetris pieces. There's also a rising floor mode that you can choose with it (or any other modes/mods)
I like watching my friends play this game and realize they have little to no problem solving skills
To me this seem like the Reverse Tetris.
The game has such calming music and you can see play at your own pace unlike the competitive Tetris 99 needing you to blitiz everything.
With the new rule of giggle physics, everything needing to combine and stay unlike Tetris stake and delete.
It cost 2.99 on the switch while Tetris 99 is free.
For what seem like a simple game, and one time purchase. I gonna to play since it seems so sweet.
To me it seems like a simple fad… But since it doing it own thing not a reskinned Tetris and seasonal update. I can see it lasting long.
I don’t why I having a sense of déjà vu like the game already existed but everyone just noticing it.

This game did not invent its own gameplay concept by any means, it's just the first one that people know about. I hope the real "Tetris killer" creates its own groundbreaking gameplay, instead of using the same concept plenty of other random mobile/website games have done before. It's also not fully polished, as shown by the sometimes broken physics of the fruit.
0:06 I mean, are they Pokemon killers if the games sell better than ever now? A better pick would be companies who make various spinoffs (TiMi, Spike Chunsoft, Bandai Namco) that not only review poorly now, but more importantly dont really sell well.
But on topic, I'd call Suika more of a modern 2048 - a fad puzzle game that will be huge for a few months....then forgotten. Tetris killer is just lol
How about doing gym leaders from previous games trying to become champion rank trainers of Paldea by being as close as possible from there original teams

Clearly the real target this game is trying to overthrow is Kerbel space program. After all, why try to puzzle your way through complicated sequences of stages and controlled burns when all you need to go to space is 1 unlucky stack of fruit

Never saw this game before, or maybe I did and it just wasn't memorable for me? (Then again, that 2048 game didn't make an impression on me, either.) Honestly, when I look at gameplay footage of it, I sooner thought of those match games where you drop round balls with cute faces on them--forgot the actual name, but it definitely doesn't remind me of Tetris.

Probably just a fad. Like 2048, temple run, wordle, flappy bird, fruit ninja, or dozens of others. Simple gameplay loop, little to no story elements, easy to pick up and easy to sneak in a round at work/school. People like it cause it’s novel, it will have some number of knockoffs, and then there will be a new one. The popularity will be fleeting, that’s just the way with these types of games. I’m not saying it won’t have a few loyal fans, but they will be the exception.
