There was Schenker & Meine, who wrote about half of the songs, while Uli Roth wrote the other half of them. It was great, as it really offered up a lot of both different & spaced-out stylings. It's a matter of opinion, however, their later '80's songs with Jabs playing lead, nothing against him, pretty much all sounded the same. Still love those early albums, except for Lonesome Crow. Music was very good, but what did they do his voice? Sounded like the vocal-track to a third-rate '60's Japanese horror film that we got stuck with on Creature Double Feature back on Saturday mornings.

His styles of lead guitar wouldn't have fit in with the rest of them developing into a typical '80's band playing Four-minute hit, hard-rock songs. Nothing against Matthias what-so-ever, as he fit their later style perfectly. Still miss those old '70's albums like In Trance & Virgin Killer. They can't be replaced.
I totally agree, however, by the time Taken By Force was released, management had him playing 30 minute solos & trying to get Scorpions into playing 3 minute singles with Michael & later Jabs. You wouldn't have fit into that style of songs. I'm happy he went off to play in Electric Sun to really let his lead guitar rip on a couple of albums before he went into neo-classical nonsense. Great to see him back with Scorpions from time to time. Really did like the first two Electric Sun albums better than what Scorpions were releasing at the time.

I never saw them with Uli but they are one of the best best bands I've ever seen live. My favourite Uli era track is Speedy's Coming and there are some brilliant vids on here with things like Sails of Charon live. A friend of a friend went to see them live in Germany and was extremely pissed off when Klaus sang the whole concert in German, you gotta grin or you would frown lol.

I absolutely agree! I watched an interview with Uli and Klaus and Uli didn't know why people thought Tokyo Tapes was such a great album. He did go on to say that after he went back and listened to the album again he finally understood the reason why it was so good.

I have never heard another guitarist blend classical and blues the way Uli does. How he slipped under the radar as one of the greats is is a head scratcher. You always hear people talk about Randy Rhoads playing classical,Uli was doing it before him. The sails of Charon is in my top 10 of all time!
I literally just said the same thing to my partner. That everyone credits Randy with the neoclassical style when it’s clearly Uli! How he’s not in the guitar mags all the time is a real head scratcher.
Because he never had a "hit song" whereas you can still hear Randy songs like Crazy Train and Flying High Again all the time on the radio - where I grew up you'd even hear Mr. Crowley once in a while

Although his style was pretty much based on Jimi:s, pretty much all of Scorpions songs he wrote, he played all of the instruments to, excluding drums, as he said it was easier to get it done without costing more studio costs. He later taught the others how the songs went. Polar Nights was their best song by far, as it was a Jimi -inspired song with one guy pretty much playing everything. After he left, They pretty much became A Political Rock Band. No complaints as They were great in The '80's, but were far different than they were with Roth playing lead guitar. Guess he played bass on their songs their songs, or, maybe Rudy did, as one could ever hear it....

I just saw Uli Jon Roth in Lakewood about a week ago. He still has his chops, even improvising a neo-classical piece while playing a nine-string Sky Guitar. What he does is neither commercial nor everyone's cup of tea. But he is a remarkable musician and has so much to offer those who are willing to dig in!
I think Rudy played the Explorer on the Tokyo Tapes towards the ending of Fly To The Rainbow, you can hear it. Also there’s videos of playback performances of “Steamrock Fever” and “I’ve Got to Be Free” with Rudy using a black and white Explorer.
I first heard this song sitting in a car on an icy cold but clear winter day in 1976. It blew my mind and I was never the same. I finally got a chance see Uli play live a few years back in a club that was far to small for his talent.

When I was 13, my uncle took me to see Scorpions and Iron Maiden. I think it was the Blackout tour. So I decided I'd buy every Scorpions album, not realizing just how long they'd been around. My first score was a rare Lonesome Crow vinyl. When I put it on, I realized I was going on a journey. I found a lot of stuff in the "budget bins" in record stores. German "Greatest Hits". Tokyo Tapes with the awesome "We'll Burn the Sky". And here I thought they had only put out the Mathias Jabs era stuff- Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism, Blackout, and Love at First Sting. But the Uli Jon Roth era just blew my mind. Sails of Charon? Frickin' amazing. I loved this band when it was really not cool to do so. I'm sorry, but Worldwide Live was the last Scorpions album I bought. I was just not a fan of the whistlin' Nineties material. But I still have my collection of the good stuff.
I saw the tour with Girls School, Iron Maiden and Scorpions. I didn't think much of Girls School that night, (they were excellent when I saw them open for Deep Purple a few years later). I did not like Iron Maiden until that night when they became one of my favorite bands. Scorpions owned, as they have each of the three times I have seen them.
That’s so cool!! I seen the Scorpions open up for Rainbow’s Straight between the eyes tour. Without Dio as the frontman, NAH!! I was only there to see the Scorpions!!! During Rainbows set, the boys from the Scorpions came out and hung out in the crowd! Shook hands with all of them!! Best concert ever👍

I can't remember what everybody played, but they usually stick to a setlist for the whole tour, so chances are it was the same songs we saw on that tour! Pretty cool.

I met Uli about 11 years ago at a music lesson he gave. Hes a down to Earth no "airs" and an amazing Human Being. Ironically i really didn't get into his Scorpions era music until I found a couple Scorpions cassette tapes at a truck stop in the early 90s.

This song was pretty much A One-Man Show & was a spooky reminder of what Jimi would have been like, had He lived. Uli was the best lead guitarist that Scorpions, or any other band ever had, because he was both A Natural & did his solos with a smile on his face instead of later day others with their eyes closed and screaming for whatever. Nothing against either Michael or Matthias...
Got to see him in Nashville at few years ago at the Basement East club. I was 5 feet away from this guitar god. I've seen Yngwie, Roth, and Michael Schenker. You can take me now, Lord :)

Yep. A very underrated guitarist. There's a video where he recently played with the current Scorpion lineup. He plays three songs: Speedy's Coming, and two others that I can't remember off the top of my head. But, I was blown away with his playing. The video is still on here.
Uli is god tier. I mean, thank you Hendrix and all those, Ulsi is till the best ever in this context. Pretty much blows away anyone alive to this day almost 50 years later.
Everyone comments on his ability to play guitar and he is one of the best to ever exist, however I like his voice. His voice is very different than Klaus Meine's and I think provides a nice contrast. I wish he had provided more vocals while w/Scorps. I'd really love to hear him do the vocals for Sails of Charon.
I have so much love and respect for Matthias Jabs for taking lead guitar dues for Uli Jon Roth... Stepping in and knowing you won't be able to really replace that guy in what he played takes some balls. He did a fantastic job in his way, but unfortunately we -almost- never witnessed the "old" songs on stage live... Love them both!
In that opening solo I was just waiting for his picking hand to start hammering the neck along with his left, but we had to wait for Eddie to figure that out, but man I've never heard anyone as close to Eddie before Eddie as this guy.
Uli Jon, it's very disappointing not to see your name when top guitarists are mentioned His style deserves a huge credit. Blues, Jazz, Folk and Classical influences in it. Not the usual solo you'd listen to
Uli is killing it and Rudy as usual hanging in the background playing in whoever’s shadow happens to be there at the time be it Uli, Matthias or his brother Michael .
My fav era is when Mattias came in up untill Love at first sting, that whole 5 year run is the best for me, but this era....... 77ish is nuthing short of incredible. That dude made Hendrix sound amatuer imo

Uli in his "Hendrixism"... just fantastic! Too bad he had left the group. To me, this is the group's best formation.

Uli is god tier. I mean, thank you Hendrix and all those, Ulsi is till the best ever in this context. Pretty much blows away anyone alive to this day almost 50 years later.

Everyone comments on his ability to play guitar and he is one of the best to ever exist, however I like his voice. His voice is very different than Klaus Meine's and I think provides a nice contrast. I wish he had provided more vocals while w/Scorps. I'd really love to hear him do the vocals for Sails of Charon.
I love his playing, but ALL the lead vocals should have been Klaus. Same with Roger Taylor of Queen. Shut up and let your exceptional vocalist sing.

I have so much love and respect for Matthias Jabs for taking lead guitar dues for Uli Jon Roth... Stepping in and knowing you won't be able to really replace that guy in what he played takes some balls. He did a fantastic job in his way, but unfortunately we -almost- never witnessed the "old" songs on stage live... Love them both!

In that opening solo I was just waiting for his picking hand to start hammering the neck along with his left, but we had to wait for Eddie to figure that out, but man I've never heard anyone as close to Eddie before Eddie as this guy.

My fav era is when Mattias came in up untill Love at first sting, that whole 5 year run is the best for me, but this era....... 77ish is nuthing short of incredible. That dude made Hendrix sound amatuer imo
