Thanks to all the readers and viewers who explained the lack of difference between the diopters! The A1 had a long-range diopter that was taller but the same diameter. I was issued an M2 style years ago with different-sized diopters. I learn something with every review and appreciate when people fill in gaps so we can share that with everyone else!

The two different sizes of aperture really started with the A2 upper. The A1 had a short range and a long range aperture that were at different heights, but still had the small aperture size.

That must be what escaped me. I'm used to the A2 apertures.

You’ve answered a question I’ve had for years. I bought a XM16E1 clone from a friend that had gotten it from a coworker’s estate sale. The lower is an early Nodak Spud clone but the upper is completely original. I never figured out the difference between the two aperture sights other than one had a “L” stamped on it.

    • @johnnytyler5685

It would be a terrible starting point because it's not even close to being correct if you are trying to be movie accurate. The rifle in the movie was an A2 upper with a 10" barrel and a custom-made muzzle device. Ironically enough, H&R just released a CORRECT upper for a "Blood Diamond clone" like two weeks ago. It's available on their website right now. Nothing about the 723 upper in this video is correct for a Blood Diamond clone.

Carried one briefly in El Salvador. FWIW, an easy rear sight upgrade is to change to the A2 or even the 9mm rear sight, which gives you more of a ghost ring option close in. I much prefer either over the standard A1 peep.

PS the ones I trained with at Ft Jackson in the 80s were severely worn out Original Nam issues I think. You could drop it from holding the flash suppressora few inches off the ground and let the butt hit the ground and it would actually partially break itself down from the light impact. Holding the barrel in onehand and the butt stock in the other you could actually flex the rifle bending it slightly up and down about an eighth of an inch. It wasn't even rigid!

It is not that the rifle does not like the Colt Magazine w/Magpul Follower. The issue is that your Magazine Spring is WEAK and is NOT Bringing the Rounds UP properly and causing the issue. When ever going to Magpul Followers it is a Good Rule to change the Magazine spring to Wolff Extra Power Springs since they have an extra 10% amount of force to push the rounds UP and your mags will work much better for a longer period of time!

    • @pewpewtactical

@@pewpewtactical Glad to help out! I have seen way too many people throw out perfectly good Aluminum mags after they put the Anti-Tilt Followers because they did not change the Original Spring when they changed the follower. I keep a Log Book of my Mags by the Number they have so I know when they were first loaded up and since sometimes they will be loaded for 18-24 months because they are in a GO-BAG I can do an audit of the mags around my birthday in January and if the magazine has been loaded for more that 3 years without been used I will rotate the Magazines and take the ones with the oldest ammo to the range and then put fresh ammo and if the spring feels weak to me I replace it after checking how old the mag is. Magpul Mags are good for about 10 years of being loaded without any issues but USGI mags are only good for about 5-7 years of being kept loaded before the Spring goes bad. I always keep at least a 10 pack of Wolff Mag Springs on hand plus I also keep spare springs for all my Weapons and Magazines. The Log Book was something I picked up while in Navy where we used Log Books for EVERYTHING except how many times we went to the bathroom! LOL

I appreciate the opportunity to explain further. I don't have disdain for the rifle, I just prefer newer ones and their capabilities. I still dig old school. It was very cool, but I appreciate the modern amenities (navigation, seat warmers/coolers, automatic transmission, etc.) of my new Durango. To answer your question, ideally I'd have both--but if I could only have one, I'd go with the one that gave me more options.
