    I had a revelation because of you. 4:3 aspect ratio is more focused. It makes you focus. And because of less space, you are more focused on the stuff that is there. My brain was *blown*. I have ADHD, so I have issues focusing, and switching my secondary monitor for a 4:3 lower resolution monitor made me more focused. Maybe I should have *both* monitors I use 4:3. I also just mostly write stuff on it, and a lot of things, I noticed, don't even *use* the width of a 16:9 aspect ratio.

    • @tokisuno
      @tokisuno  Год назад +6

      4:3 is a lot more focused since you don't have other places to look. but also, you can achieve this by just learning to live with the discomfort of not having everything open at once to appear busy/productive.

    • @DigitalNegative
      @DigitalNegative 11 месяцев назад +1

      I find 16:10 great as well. It's also about overall resolution and the macbook pros from the era are also great for focus.

    • @Veg-Power
      @Veg-Power 6 месяцев назад

      I like 3:2 most. 4:3 is very cool but can't stand it for too long haha. Also bc of ADHD... bc I want to be extremly quick/instant with everything otherwise my brain slows down (lacks dopamin) and 4:3 laptops are slow even on linux. with my T601p Frankenpad i could install a fast enough CPU but I'd need to change panels, too since it just doesn't get above 90 Nits anymore. And yeah for my work I have to to a tooooon of research with 30+ tabs. So 3:2 is the best of both worlds for me while 16:10 is kinda ok. 16:9 ist the worst for me, can't stand any 16:9 laptop ^^ just good for media consumption which is not the no.1 thing I want to do with a laptop.
      That said my X61 is my most beloved Laptop lol. It has a T8100 with BSEL-mod @3,06 GHz, 8 GB DDR2 and an SSD and it's kinda fast enough with AntiX linux. XGA still bothers me a bit while i find the sxga+ ips screen from the x61 tablet wonderful. Planning to upgrade to that. The formfactor and looks of the x61 are just too cool ^^ and yeah the keyboard. + like I said 4:3 is at least better than 16:9 or 16:10 to me so I don't use an x200 or x220. In linux I can even run 1080p youtube but with some dropped frames while 720p is smooth!

    I actually enjoyed using a core 2 duo laptop for school. It was annoying to multitask and it only had 2gb of ram. However I found it smooth and enjoyable to use. It was an hp dv6000 that my grandma gave me for free.

    • @tokisuno
      @tokisuno  11 месяцев назад +3

      2gb of ram and a core 2 due is never a good sign for multitasking. having 4gb of ram minimum was enough for my second year of uni. i think using an underpowered computer helped me get into deep focus more honestly, since i literally couldn't do anything else but study on the computer. like, that's all it could handle. not being able to multitask like i can with my desktop was a plus.

    Huge problem on Thinkpads like X61 is the TN panel, so if you are sensitive to bad screens, you should avoid them. Yes it can be upgraded, but that's expensive. And the overheating Wifi card can be annoying. Still, cool machines, in terms of aesthetics and utility. X220 and X230 are the way to go in 2023. I use X230 i7-3612qe as main and only machine.

    • @tokisuno
      @tokisuno  Год назад

      wifi card can be replaced pretty easily for aftermarket cards. the screen is pretty shit yeah, but usable if you're in a well lit room most of the time. my main problem with it is the fan, which can also be replaced and oiled (im lazy).
      how are the thermals and power consumption on the i7 x230? they're terrible on the x220.

    • @Wisankara
      @Wisankara Год назад

      @@tokisuno Wifi card isn't the problem in itself, it's location is. I've tried with another one, nothing changed. X230 with i7-3612qe is actually cooler, quieter, and has lower power consumption than X220, and the original X230 i7-3520m. I have X220 too, it's fan is always spinning, loud, hot, and power consumption often spikes up to 30+ watts just for web browsing. You can limit your cpu to 30-50% usage with TLPUI, battery life should be better. I managed 6+ hours with my X230 and 89Wh battery (mixed use). It's a bit slower, but for reading documents and writing it's almost no difference, being down clocked to 1.2Ghz, you can even watch 1080p videos (and it decently outperforms X220). Is i7-3612qe worth the investment of 200$? Depends. I got mine much cheaper anyway. Default X230 is better than X220 for sure.

    I have a ThinkPad T450 and I like the keyboard on it too, but same problem with your X61 that it has a pretty poor TN screen.
    On the topic of the X61 and older 4:3 laptops, honestly I find the aspect ratio nicer for writing documents as using Microsoft Word or Google Docs or any word processor on a widescreen display is a just a massive waste of screen space. I've gotten used to snapping Word on just the left or right side of my T450's screen and I found I'm able to focus better on documents that way.
    As far as multitasking, my T450 has an i5 5300U and I find its still pretty underpowered for doing graphics and basic game programing on Unity and similar tasks even with 16gb of RAM.

    Just came across this now. I'm curious in a couple years, 5 years, 10 years...would you still be in the same mentality to use older hardware to complete like you've said 90% of what you need to do. Obviously, not saying you die on this hill, if you need high performance and modern architecture then ya need it.
    I love older tech. currently, I am a fan of anything from the 2010s, roughly starting around 2012 until even around 2018 ish. Technology wise, things have advanced so far but a quad core i7 or even i5 can still do wonders on an older machine. My parents all have older hardware, they don't need the newest and fastest. They have optimal. Even having linux on an older laptop is a lifesaver. And I understand this is all use case and more niche if anything. I was just curious if you keep this old tech mindset in the future, what era or generation of the tech you choose would you move on to next. IMO unless you are just word processing, anything before late 2000s is gonna be brought. I still have my netbook from undergrad in 2009 that I just loaded up linux with a 1 core 2 thread intel atom and 2gb ram, that thing is a typing machine. So I completely understand putting yourself in a distraction free mind set that way. Not everyone has that ability to ignore notifications or the temptation of netflix oa second monitor while trying to write.
    I have more to say but figure this was enough. This was just kinda my response to that bitter one below haha. That was rough to read. A mind has never been more closed.

    So many young people buying these stupid old Thinkpads these days because they watched some RUclips video or something. It really maks no sense to me... A year or two down the line he's probably gonna realise that this was a waste (It he hasn't already) and there are more slimmer, affordable laptops out there, that will out perform this thing by a mile. The modern age of software just isn't compatible to be running this old technology as a daily driver, especially in work or school based enviroments. Unless your a vintage tech hobyist your honestly just wasting your time.

    • @tokisuno
      @tokisuno  9 месяцев назад +8

      you missed a major point of this, which is the fact that you can use lightweight minimal software and still do 90% of what you do. you can't stray away over to distractions if your cpu can't physically handle them LMAO.
      and yeah i swapped off my x61 because i started doing data analysis in R. you don't have to go to an extreme like a core 2 duo, but older laptops generally are better bang for your buck. i don't see how it's outrageous to think that finding a cheap x1c6 or a t470 is a good deal. if someone overpaid for an x61 because of my video, that's not on me. that's on them. i literally got mine for free. my x220 i got for $70 and i used it for almost a year. i only upgraded because i needed a 1080p display.
      in work-based environments, they'll give you a laptop so you won't have a choice. most schooling can be done on an underpowered chromebook.
      i don't see the point in this comment. people will be hobbyists and pick up something because of youtube videos. communities form through this. who cares man.

      are you also aware that not everyone has the means and the funds available to get something as quickly and optimally as you see fit? everyone's life situation is different. it's a ridiculous method to you and that's fine, but you're knocking over people for experimenting with things they're interested in. im sorry you feel so personally vindicated by people enjoying older tech in the study space. people learn their own ways and figure out their processes and ideals through trial and error. i have a setup now that could not run on my x61 anymore, and that's fine. but it can run on basically anything else. i wouldn't have gotten there if i hadn't experimented with thinkpads and linux. it's a process.

      1366x768: Awful resolution for basically anything
      TNT display: Terrible visual display (washed out colours, etc) and angles.
      Battery: Very, very low battery life even with 9cell.
      Touchpad: Awufl touchpad! The thing is basically unusable. The Track point is still good, but the fact that the touchpad is that bad is insane.
      Keyboard: Mediocre. I know it's subjective and the thinkpad fandom is very vocal, but the newer chicklet keys are just superior.
      The only good thing about that laptop was that It was a pretty small form factor for the time and was quite upgradable. But the reality is by time you upgrade that thing with a 9cell battery, Ips display, more ram, better cpu, you're still stuck with a pretty mediocre laptop with a terrible resolution and a bunch of money lost that could have gone to something better. It's just not very good.

    • @tokisuno
      @tokisuno  9 месяцев назад +1

      i agree with everything but the keyboard. i can agree to disagree with 1366x768 because yeah, it's bad. but for most things it really isn't that bad. it's very usable. the whole idea behind buying older thinkpads is that you can find good deals on them for cheap, that's all. they're just a known brand which get tossed out by businesses when they go out of business, making them easy to find for cheaper online.
      another bit point you're missing is that it doesn't have to be thinkpads. it's just what's common, and now that thinkpads are becoming more expensive second hand, it's harder to find good deals for them. the point is, you can buy second hand business laptops for a fraction of the price that do probably 90% of what you want your laptop to do if all you do is study and do ligthweight coding. i don't think that's an insane viewpoint to stand by..
