  • “Scaling up will kill Burning Man.” “That new rule will kill Burning Man.” “The Bureau of Land Management will kill Burning Man.” “Selling tickets that way will kill Burning Man.” “Board infighting will kill Burning Man.” “Upscale turnkey camps will kill Burning Man.”
    Ha.
What if Burning Man is too fragile to be killed? What if celebrating ephemerality is the best guarantee of continuity? What if every year’s brand new suspension of disbelief has deep-down durability? What if conservatively radical principles and evolving rules are more robust over time than anything merely physical?
What really keeps the Man burning? If anyone knows, it should be the event’s primary founder, author of The Principles, and ongoing Chief Philosophical Officer, artist Larry Harvey.

Excellent talk. I went out to the free burn in the black rock desert and Larry’s garden ( this summer 2021 there was an estimated 50k campers over a two week period) was is full swing. It was the best of burning man minus the over the top law enforcement, rules and regs, and over the top rave culture. The experiment worked because the community had to practice radical self reliance ( composting toilets, ice etc.). It was radical inclusion too. I met loads of virgins who had no excuse about not being able to afford to participate. There were excellent radio stations, And people really were following the principals. Larry Harvey would have called it his favorite burn if he were there because it was so much about communion. Thanks Larry for staying after it. No doubt we live in a much more creative loving and gifting world because you guys believed in it being the greatest gathering of the tribe the world has ever known. Burn Free in 2022!!!!!!🍻💕🍀🌈🎸💐🎸🌹🍄💃🔥🔥🔥
