Aristotle and Dante Cast and Director Discuss Making the TIFF Coming-of-Age Darling

- There's no shortage of coming-of-age and self-discovery stories nowadays, but director Aitch Alberto was drawn specifically to the 2012 novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by author Benjamin Alire Sáenz for her directorial debut. Making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film brought to audiences the story of two loners played by Max Pelayo and Reese Gonzalez who find comfort and acceptance in each other. Following its first screening at the festival, Collider's own Steve Weintraub sat down with Alberto, Pelayo, and Gonzalez to discuss how the compassionate tale of identity, acceptance, and expression came to be.
Aristotle and Dante focus on two young boys, Aristotle (Pelayo) and Dante (Gonzalez), a pair of Mexican-American loners whose differences outnumber the stars in the sky. Ari is an angry teen with questions about his family and about himself while Dante is a know-it-all whose sincerity and unique worldview endear him to Ari. During one summer in El Paso in 1987, they form a lasting bond that intertwines them for the long haul. Together, they navigate a formative period in their lives as they figure out their identity through their racial and ethnic identity and their sexuality.
During their interview, Alberto, Pelayo, and Gonzalez got to dig into both the behind-the-scenes happenings that led to the creation of the film and the actual process of fleshing out a more diverse coming-of-age tale. What transpired is a discussion not just of the typical challenges of shooting and selling the film, but also the cultural challenges and changes that stood in the way of making the film as originally intended. As with all of Collider's TIFF guests, the trio also went in-depth into some more personal questions about their favorite films, shows they'd like to guest star/direct on, and much more.

I don't remember dante having a long curly hair ( Hence, i rwad the book for 4th time to confirm... Guess what? Dante has tat bit long hair but not curly at all... I would love it if casting director confirm it with Ben the author)in the book. Dante looks like eng here rather than Mexican ethnic

@@angsavegas6671 i think he is not supposed to look very Mexican, because he said mutable in the books that he does not really feel like a true Mexican (cause his skin is not that dark). It is also mentioned that his skin is lighter than aris.

@@angsavegas6671 I've seen the film and you can rest your worries, Reese is Dante. He embodied the character perfectly and so did Max with Ari.
omg i love aitch she seems like such a kind and welcoming person, you can really tell she cares about her craft and the actors that she works with
I really like Reese's voice, which is an essential part of being a good actor
I can't wait to see it. The books were amazing. This, Heartstopper, Young Royals - finally getting some representation of the kind of real love that happens among the LGBTQ community. Beautiful representation that even the most bigoted in society can't watch without forcing them to think a little. Thanks for doing this.

The casting is perfection! Aristotle is absolutely beautiful. Dante has that nerdy vibe but equally gorgeous. Ugh the movie was fantastic! Read the two books you will love them

After I saw the trailer I relistened to the entire audiobook in a day and the actors where so perfectly cast I could completely see them as ari and dante

I really love the character of Ari and Dante. The actors who potrayed them were superb. Ari reminded me of my close friend back in the high school days. Geee, Ari even looks like him. Dante's acting was really natural though heartbreaking most of the time. Congratulations to the whole production but most of all, the actors especially the ones who acted out Ari and Dante.

I've seen Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe three times now and look forward to seeing it again. Max Pelayo and Reese Gonzalez are phenomenal. They portray their characters, and their individual transformations, with extraordinary skill. And they take you along with them each step of the way. I cannot wait for their next adventures on the screen! Highly recommended.

The guy who plays Ari is a great cast... fits as Ari but I didn't feel like the guy who plays Dante is a fit..
Editted: I read Ari n Dante book for the forth time to study if the Dante has curly hair and fair skin and english looking. It is said that Dante has tat bit long hair and bit fairer skin than Ari... Please I can compromise with the casting but please make this movie greater than the book. I am really looking forward to it.
