Learning Detachment from Your Stuff

- Sometimes the things that we own end up owning us. Detachment prevents this from happening.
You may have heard of the minimalist movement that focuses on only having the things you need, and letting go of the things you don’t. Most people practice this by decluttering their house or storage, like you would if you were cleaning out a closet. But it’s not so much having a lot of stuff that’s the problem: it’s being attached to those things, and letting them have a sense of control over your life.
This can happen with anything we own, from entertainment resources like books or video games, to things like photos, letters from family and friends, or even notes from your favorite theology course. For some reason, our hearts hold on to certain things, even if we haven’t looked at them in years, just in case we need them someday. Maybe it’s because of sentimental value, or because we find joy in them, but most of the time, we keep these things for a sense of security.
There’s nothing wrong with having things, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with finding joy in the things we do have. But if there are things sitting on our shelves, collecting dust because we’re keeping them “just in case,” maybe the question we need to ask ourselves is, “what does God want me to do with this?” Does he want us to keep it and use it, or give it away to someone who needs it, or just throw it away? But the important thing to remember is that everything we have should be looked at with the idea that we can do something good with it, and intend to use it for the glory of God.
If you still have use for it, then keep it. If it’s done all it can for you, and has more goodness for someone else, then give it away. And if all its goodness is used up, then toss it. But whatever we have, we need to give it to God, acknowledging that he gave it to us in the first place. Letting him decide what we do with the things we own is the perfect way to not only detach ourselves from our possessions, but to gain more freedom in our lives to bless others.

in 2012, i learned a huge lesson about not getting attached to material things. my house was hit by a flash flood. almost 90% of my stuff, things that i had collected over many years and on my travels were destroyed. now i no longer feel too great a need to own stuff.
btw, a miracle happened, too. a container of Catholic stuff, books, etc, was left unscathed. later i discovered that the container had a hole in it, yet everything inside was dry! Praise Jesus.

Yes, it is a distraction. Detachment is going to be a marathon for me, not a sprint.

I am going through that too.. more than 60 pairs of shoes speak about how desperate or anxious I can be sometimes.. it is just simply a distraction... but the real peace comes from the Lord.

I have a similar struggle. especially when the things remember me of better times.
Now more than ever, I like my vintage stuff because it reminds me of a "simpler, happier" time.

@@ksks9541 Priests don’t get paid much and most of them don’t live in giant churches, they have smaller homes that they live in with other priests. The Vatican is in Rome Italy Genius, they don’t “work” for it like it’s the government, they work for God.

I’ve had a rocky relationship with spirituality between Atheism, Agnosticism, and explored all types of other religious avenues. But for an unknown reason the other day. I grew up southern Baptist as well and what I can definitely tell you is that there is sin in the church too and in much research it's not just Baptist it's all dark sin really dark don't trust in church trust in God and you will find comfort The stronger your relationship with Jesus Christ Through communication with him you will find what you really need love you and God bless you Amen.

When my husband would bring home an item of which we already had one (or two), I would ask why. He would say, just in case ... the coffee pot breaks or the toaster fails or whatever. It was good to have a standby replacement just in case. I finally teased him that “JUSTIN CASE” had moved in and brought an awful lot of stuff with him. We laughed.
In March 2020, my beloved husband of 50+ yrs died. And as I pack-donate-discard, I hold the item we have in duplicate (triplicate), and I (1) pray for the eternal repose of his soul (2) thank God for His extraordinarily providential care that we have never wanted for stuff (3) remind myself that the hearse that carries me will not be pulling a U-Haul truck.

Thank you, Father! This is very timely, considering that Ash Wednesday is two weeks from today- not that we only think of detachment during Lent, but that it's a perfect time to reflect on this as we go deeper into our faith. I think detachment not only applies to physical items, but to our reputations, ideas, careers, and preferences

What do you mean by attachments to preferences?
I think we should distinguish detachment and preferences - it's okay to have preferences as long as they don't become inordinate attachments. One can prefer to have something / not to lose something, without being attached to it and unwilling to give it up at all.
This is wonderfully timed for me. At a recent silent retreat, the call to simplicity rose up higher than ever within me and within just a couple of weeks, my home now looks astonishingly different. The driving force for me was Matthew 6:21: "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also". I found that my key attachments were to a) tangible signs of personal identity; and b) tangible connections to the past. There has been great freedom in recognising and acknowledging that God is, indeed, enough.

Thank you, Father for another great and timely message! I used to belong to a consignment shop where I would sell some things but I have felt the Holy Spirit tell me to just donate the items. So now I donate items and I donate them to our local St. Vincent Society which has a thrift shop. The money from the shop funds the family soup kitchen and other services. I say a simple prayer to the Lord before I donate to please let the items be a blessing to whoever buys them and to let the money from the sell to be used in the best way possible. Even though I have debt and I was using the consignment money to help pay down the debt, I will continue to spend less, pay on the debt, and donate. My moto this year: simplify the worldly and be rich in the Spirit. God Bless!

I think a lot of people would like this, but my hunch is that he/ascension would try to stay away from pointing the focus on "mike schmitz's personal life" as much "mike schmitz as a guidepost that points away from himself and toward God." It's a slippery slope toward our inclination toward a sort of idolatry. That said, I'd probably totallllllllly watch it. 🙊

I think this is very important generally and very convicting personally, but it is a hard teaching. I love having my books, I am very sentimental, and I purposefully cling to any shred of even illusory security. That message of good stewardship is a revelation, and I will strive to strive for it.
This is just my two cents and I'm not saying anything definitive, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think the key is to distinguish between attachment and preference - it's okay to like having books, memories and to dislike the idea of them being destroyed since you like them, but they shouldn't be viewed as our security. We shouldn't cling to them in the sense that they are our safety - only God is our Rock. Desiring and enjoying having these things is fine in itself, so long as they aren't our security blanket, and we can handle losing them if need be. Detachment is simply knowing what to actually be Attached to, and ordering everything according to Wisdom and the greater Good.
I am in the midst of a move-to-be, that has been fraught with delays and chaos. Fr. Mike, I love your Masses and sermons and podcasts. Thank you for your effervescent nature and your wisdom, and most especially for your humour! You always leave me with inspiration and renewed gumption....God has truly blessed you.

For a long time, my lifestyle involved moving every few years -- that will teach detachment! Moving is hard work! So, here's a mental list I go through each and every time I want to buy something: for each item, I have to 1) pay for it; 2) probably pay tax on it; 3) insure it; 4) maintain/clean it; and 5) find room to store it. Do I really want it? :-) And ... one positive of the current time is that I've had tons of fun trying to make/fix/re-use something using what I already have in my house. Creativity is fun and satisfying!
Just lost my purse (had no valuables in it) and was disappointed because I have no good way of finding it and then got on RUclips and found this video. Glad to know that someone else who needs it more probably has it and that I can glorify God by using less stuff.

Great message! As empty nesters, we (I) are in the process of downsizing. Not just our things, but half an attic holding belongings that my late parents owned. Add to this monumental job, being sentimental and it has been emotional and very drawn out job. You touched on something a friend shared with me last year. She said, "Find a charity thrift shop and donate those things to them. You will be financially helping a charity near and dear to your heart, but your treasures will become another persons treasures." All the bells went off! It has made the job of downsizing so much easier, knowing those loved items will be loved once again, while helping a good cause. Thank you for this timely message, Fr. Mike. I plan to come back to it often when I feel myself slipping back, wanting to hold on to material comforts. Pax Christi.

The best way to answer 'do I need this?': Imagine you are a truck driver. What would you put in your truck? Example: I get to go home every other weekend. I have what I need in the truck for exactly 12 days. Everything else is at home. Figure out what you need for 2 weeks and go through the rest. Good Luck!

My husband is a OTR truck driver. He takes just what he needs for 4 or 5 weeks and off he goes. Always living in the moment. Gratitude for an item before you give it up can also help to let go. Sometimes I feel ungrateful for letting go of gifts people gave me
I am very sentimental over things, and struggle with this because of it. Even books will remind me of where I was when I first read them, people I knew at the time etc. So it's very hard to let go.

Detachment from things I already own is far easier for me than detachment from getting new stuff. Not ordering online etc, making do with what I already have - that's my challenge!
I think we all need this .... and during a global pandemic when so many are suffering from a concern of loss. I think it's ok for all of us to give presence to this... @@Rebeccar219 Respectfully Disagree. They have served their purpose. When I decluttered I kept a binder of cards with a written msg or something handmade. I used the Marie Kondo method of taking time to send a msg of thanks, savour the memory (wedding, birthday) and then decide to keep or discard. I know if someone throws a card I sent, I hope it has served the purpose of bringng joy or consolation for the time they read it or chose to keep it.

However, I have a box of birthday cards ,as I treasure the children's handwriting throughout their school years. Plus, since we only live for a set period of time as per God ,I treasure the handwriting or handmade gifts of the dearly departed. Which could be anytime for all of us. I went through this a few months ago. And I weeded out alot of stuff. Some was thrown out. Some was given away. The rest is in storage. And I keep going through my mind about what else I could get rid of.
I've been seeing alot of people on RUclips who moved out of a house, and onto a sailboat. This is some of what has been driving me about what else I can get rid of. But I think it is the Lord telling me to uncluttered some more
i am very attached to my rosary beads. and i lost them 2 weeks ago. i felt like they were part of me. they were a beautiful color blue and i bought them at Saint Patrick's cathedral in NYC. i even had my favorite priest bless them. i feel naked without them. i prayed to everyone you can think of to help me find them. i even went of Saint Anthony for help. i think of them constantly. i am hoping they will reappear in the future. it is not a money issue. i can certainly afford to buy another rosary. but i still feel like i lost my best friend...
This really resonates with me. I went to Medjugorje in 2018, and carried with me every day since the rosary that was blessed by Our Lady at an apparition, as well as by holy priests. It was also touched to numerous relics. Now, because I liked it so much that I took it with me everywhere I - and then lost it. I have other rosaries but I’ve really missed that one. My sister, who is a better person than I am, reminds me that perhaps someone found it who needs it more than I did. This helps. But, I admit I still would love that rosary back.

I have a rosary I got for my Confirmation that I take everywhere with me in a pouch. It’s missing a bead and the ends are rubbing a bit, but parting with it would probably cause me sadness as well. I’ve bought and received other rosaries, but here is something about your first rosary or one with a story that resonates with you.
Hopefully you find your rosary but if not, then I say pray that whoever finds it draws closer to God as you have.

Mine is about memories. I lost my grandparents within 4 weeks of one another, and I ended up with multiple items of their belongings. I still, over 15 years later, feel guilt if I think of getting rid of something. I have, but struggle.

maybe give up one day a week for lent...always start with small steps, not everything t once. It is hard. I used to speed alt he time. I gave up speeding for lent. BUT, I started a few weeks ahead of time by giving it up for a day a week. It worked. I slipped up a few times, but best sacrifice ever. I speed much less and when I get too fast, I apologize to God. Thank you for this, I grew up with family that kept everything because they lived through the depression and we had to clean it all out when they passed. I decided to break that chain so when I moved across state a couple of years ago I purged big time but still have stuff watching this that I really want to clear out. About 10 years ago I got schizophrenia and nearly became homeless, now I'm trying to invest money in assets so that if I ever lose my job or fall on hard times I can live off and even retire one day on my assets, that event 10 years ago made me realise life is hard and you should prepare for it and that's the truth, I'm sorry to say I believe if I detach myself from all my money and think God will take care of me i will be wrong because look at the starving kids in Yemen, I now believe God gave us a brain to use money correctly and invest a lot in many different types of investments and yes give a small percentage of that to the poor cause the reality is if you give all your money away the reality is that you could starve just like those kids in Yemen.
