  • Why Does Webb Have Gold Mirrors?
    The Webb’s Telescope’s dazzling mirrors have a microscopic layer of gold and it isn’t for aesthetic reasons. Different wavelengths of light are best reflected with certain metals. Reflect on these materials along with host Sophia Roberts to learn why these mirrors are so well suited for infrared observation. #UnfoldTheUniverse

    Will the yellow gold mirror color require NASA to color-correct JWST's images like they have to for images that are taken through our blue atmosphere?

    • @wasd____
      @wasd____ 2 года назад

      No, JWST is an infrared telescope. It doesn't "see" in color as we think of it.

      Just wish they didn’t make it so weird. Like boiled eggs are the reason the jwst used gold not silver. Just tell use the real reason and just let the people google the parts they didn’t understand.

    Why doesn’t the gold mirror affect the image? Doesn’t the gold colour make the image more yellow in colour?

  • @sunshineandflowers2694

    Due to the large surface area of the mirrors, how durable are they from space dust and debris?

    • @NASAWebbTelescope
      @NASAWebbTelescope  2 года назад +16

      We'll be a million miles from Earth and there isn't much debris out there. Tests were done on beryllium mirrors (beryllium is what is under the gold) and micrometeoroids had negligible effects on them.

  • @wasd____
    @wasd____ 2 года назад

    Pretty sure oxidation resistance isn't a big factor in the design criteria for something that's going to be in space.

    Must be a lot more boiled eggs in space then I previously envisioned lol. And beryllium is what came to mind when you mention the jwst primary mirror. But seriously. How is boiled eggs going to be a problem 1 million miles from earth in a vacuum

  • @lidarman2

    Gold is the best reflector for the wavelengths measured, nuff said. This whole thing about gold not oxidizing is just fluff because Webb is going to be in space.

  • @BrentLeVasseur

    So why go to all the trouble to fabricate a Beryllium mirror only to end up coating it in gold?And what about Gallium? A liquid gallium mirror might be just as good.

    About five years ago I had the remarkable experience of seeing the beautiful Mask of Agamemnon, which is displayed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. What was so astonishing to me was that approximately 3500 years after it was created, it looked like it could have just been made. The artistry of it is beautiful and very historically significant, but the gold was spectacular! Photographs cannot do it justice. Gold has inspired the term "The Gold Standard" for good reason! It should serve JWST well.
