Warren: I realize that a large percentage of your RUclips viewers may be more interested in the latest monitors or plugins. However, thank you so much for doing this series of interviews with the innovators of music technology. While many may think of these people as techno-centric, what repeatedly emerges from these interviews is their common drive to find new ways of capturing the human emotional component of creating music. You are doing a great service to the musical world by conducting these interviews. Best wishes.
That was absolutely amazing. When Mr. Thompson was going through his demo I felt like I was listening to a Mission Impossible movie. Just epic! If a movie was ever made about Mr. Thompson they should use Zach Galifianakis to play him. Excellent video and great interview.
Never thought i'd see you guys together, Absolutly a treat. One Spitfire guy met another Spitfire guy of a different kind....this interview really is spitting fire!
Abbey Road is without the doubt the greatest studio in the world and Spitfire Audio have done an amazing job of preserving that with these incredible strings
Thank you Warren for making this video and thank you Spitfire Audio for all of your free LABS samples that allow hobbyist newbies like me to enjoy experimenting with sound in my favourite DAW. Great work 🥰👍👍👍
Paul Thompson is wonderful. I loved his studio building he built from the ground up...he made a mini series out of it. He has made many studios, this one was his Cotswold building.
This was absolutely fascinating, it went by so fast. I'm just a basement hack and I have dabbled with some of the LABS stuff but to watch someone who really knows how to score and use these kinds of samples explain the rationale behind it all was very enlightening. Thank you Warren and Paul! Thank you to Spitfire Audio for their generosity in continuing to make LABS available to us all.
Always a fan of their libraries, but confused as well when I would follow along over the years as these were developed. Some things were free, but then again a lot of things weren’t. Reading your comment sections helps me understand the reason. Always thankful for your contributions to our community Warren. You are really the one guy I really trust. You have helped me more than any single person. Couldn’t thank you enough!! THANK YOU!
Listening/watching this as I go through the process of writing a grant for a documentary video on the art exhibition I recently put on. Ill be producing the video and scoring it as well. Watching this makes the process more bearable. Excellent and encouraging.
Abbey Road should really sell Impulse Response packs of their rooms. It’s not like artists who could afford the studio time would ever stop going there.
@TheTiredHorizon I could see a lot of plugin companies more than willing to create this (namely IK Multimedia with their experience from Sunset and Fame). Or allow Altiverb to sample the place.
Hi Warren, thank you ofr a great interview with Paul Thompson, love the spitfire Library Abbey Rd One I got it with the selections which I are wnderful, now I will have to look at Abbey Rd 2, I have spent time over the years in this iconic studio, its truly unforgettable.
Thanks for the lovely interview. Made my first Spitfire purchase as a result, and I'm recording at Abbey Road Studios in 12 days... dream come true... for anyone who might be looking for a new acoustic artist, check me out! All the best Warren!
The thing about theory or any education is to learn it so well that it becomes internalized. Then when you are in the actual act of composing you don’t think, you just create. The same way that an improviser learns the musical language they want to improvise in by slow and careful practice/study. Then when improvising you just create.
Indeed. Here’s an interesting argument that scholars pose, Mozart and Beethoven’s level of theory was a fraction of what is being taught to a modern music student. Who created the better music? Food for thought.
That's true Warren but seeing as tonal music had just been codified towards the end of Bach's life, there wasn't as much theory to learn. We have had 200 years of development since then. That being said, try to write the species counterpoint exercises that Mozart and Beethoven were taught for some brain bending study. @@Producelikeapro
I've worked from the Mozart/Thomas Attwood counterpoint exercises@@PeteCalandra ultimately we are taught a huge amount more and understand a huge amount more, that hasn't increased the quality of the writing. Inspiration first, melody first, learning is wonderful, I love it, however we shouldn't hide behind the cleverness that it provides.
Eh, if you play one note in isolation it sounds okay, but because of the lack of dynamics, round robins, legato transitions, and you know - _stretching one sample all the way across the keyboard_ it sounds pretty terrible for any more realistic arrangements.
To me without a doubt the greatest orchestral song arrangement is Frank Sinatra - it was a very good year Possibly the most emotionally captivating arrangement ever written and performed
Are spitfire instruments compatible with new Apple silicon, in the same way as kontakt is.? Also are previous kontakt spitfire samples working with silicon? I own spitfire stuff that is licenced thru kontakt, like chamber strings etc..interested to know if it all runs in kontakt 7 in silicon. I'm just about to switch to Mac version and would like to know.
In the days before 'equal temperament', they were different notes with differing pitches. I think 19 was the octave total. On a fretless instrument (violin, cello etc) , you can still achieve endless pitch variation between two adjacent notes, but on the piano, there are only 12 steps/octave, and the older C# and Db were subsumed into one labelled pitch for both notes.
Plus as already mentioned in the comment, the sharp or flat actually give you context what is being played. so its also informs musician on what context the note is used to simplfy it.
It's very well covered here in answers!@@gaganbakana Yes, equal temperament approximated the notes between the sharp and flat. Equal temperament enabled all keys to sound the same when transposing from one key to another
Thank you for having me! I really enjoyed this chat - having enjoyed a lot of your videos Warren it was slightly surreal talking to you in real life!
Aw shucks! Thanks ever so much Paul! You're very kind, I love your videos as well, so equally as surreal for me! Haha

What are some of your favourite songs with string arrangements?
Nirvana (UK) - Show must go on
Dimmu Borgir - Perfection or Vanity
FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE - The Violation
Two Steps From Hell - Victory
Anything produced by Phil Ramone and Phil Spector. There is also that Spearhead record with strings...
