It's a very interesting thought, which I've wondered about as well. I tend to watch a lot of videos from SEALS and other Special Ops. It seems to me that the driving focus is shear grit and never-give-up determination, where it comes from is probably deep within, they just will not quit. Some world class athletes have failed BUDS, some not particularly note-worthy (at 1st glance) average guys that weren't stand out athletes or with grades, made it through and excelled. What breaks my heart is the stories of the BUDS candidates that are dropped due to some freak accident/injury that is just so severe they cannot continue. These folks all have that 'extra' that most of us don't.
You hit the nail on the head. I currently work for the Army on a couple different fronts. Spend a lot of time around elite level warriors. It’s not something you can necessarily train for, but it is a mindset you can develop over time….if you’re born with the capacity to exponentially continue to push yourself and care more about your buddies’ live than your own.
I think there are probably two types of ‘never quit’ guys. There are the tough, rugged guys who in absolutely anything they do they just won’t quit, like a pit bull. But then there are guys who have made a decision, a decision that that is absolutely, no question what they want to do with their life, they know with every fibre that they want to be in special operations. Special Operations selections in the military are definitely a weeding out process. It has to do with if someone is right for and to be in the Special Operations, they'll make it. People all have different opinions. Genetics play a part. So do choices. It makes sense to me how John Jocko Willink explains things about Special Operations.
Speaking personally, my life is comfortable enough but if I am looking for challenges there are plenty of areas of my life where I could be a lot more disciplined than I am. Perhaps this applies to many of us. Might it not be better to start there?
There is an aspect that draws young men, and increasingly young women, to the armed forces, not often talked about: "Rights of passage." They want to take part in something that they feel made them into a real "Man" or a real "Woman." And becoming a warrior fills that need for them.

There are a lot of examples of “BUDS” type men in other real life situations. Some examples: The mountain men in the early west; the first men who went ashore on D-day into the teeth of German machine guns; the men who fought at the Chosin reservoir in Korea in 40 below temperatures; tunnel rats in Vietnam who went into VC tunnels armed with a pistol and a flashlight; and the SEALS, Marines and Army who fought the insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
I would guess that people that make it through can accept their current reality and do only that. They don't fantasize about it being over or anything like that. I guess they are masters of being "in the moment". Also they are total chads.
The only thing they cannot study or figure out is DRIVE! All the think tanks in the wold can apply all the mathematical statistics to BUD/S or the Q course or any kind of special ops training they want...Unless you figure out a way to assess each and every particular individuals motivation, who shows up to training......you cannot predict who will make it and who will not. BUD/S is a particularly good example of this...as is the training for the FFL (French Foreign Legion)....no differemce at all...
It all comes down to how bad you want it and caring for the guy next to you. That's why psychatrist can't define the typical person that will make it trough BUDS because whatever shape you're in, it's mind over matter.

What if I told you that to eat this delicious chocolate cake, you had to eat 10 slugs and everyone had to do it even if you didn't want to? People who have had a lot of cake would quit beacuse they don't want the chocolate cake bad enough. But I bet almost every severely poor homeless person would eat the slugs to have some of that delicious cake. Why? Beacuse they WANT IT bad enough. Buds is like the chocolate cake. Hard disagree. For one, lack of emotion also means inability to form social bonds and genuine friendships. Time and time again retired spec op guys talk about the camaraderie and brotherhood in their teams. Hell, a lot of PTSD and trauma that comes for veterans comes from the sudden disconnect from a community where they truly feel like they belong in (the definition of depression). BUDS doesn't test for fear of combat or death, as it's essentially PT on steroids. Again, a big part of it is that "individuals don't make it, teams do", referring to being able to maintain composure and focus on the overall team mission during times of stress, not on your own safety (or in the case of psychopaths, ego and desire to just kill for the sake of killing). SEALs that I've heard of here on youtube in particular talk about how the best part of the teams and what drives them to want to do the job and be the best at it isn't combat or patriotism, it's about not letting teams down

For one, lack of emotion also means inability to form social bonds and genuine friendships. Time and time again retired spec op guys talk about the camaraderie and brotherhood in their teams. Hell, a lot of PTSD and trauma that comes for veterans comes from the sudden disconnect from a community where they truly feel like they belong in (the definition of depression).
BUDS doesn't test for fear of combat or death, as it's essentially PT on steroids. Again, a big part of it is that "individuals don't make it, teams do", referring to being able to maintain composure and focus on the overall team mission during times of stress, not on your own safety (or in the case of psychopaths, ego and desire to just kill for the sake of killing). SEALs that I've heard of here on youtube in particular talk about how the best part of the teams and what drives them to want to do the job and be the best at it isn't combat or patriotism, it's about not letting teams down

Disagree as well. I think it involves tons of emotion. If you didn’t want it then why in the hell do it? That emotion and drive is what will get you through it. Any of us physically able could pass buds…. And any of us physically able could fail buds. Key really is how bad do you want it. Why do you think so many New Year’s resolutions fail?? Half hearted attempt that sounded cool at the time won’t last. Wanna pass buds? Get the tunnel vision and make it the only priority in your life. It’s not rocket science and applies to other things in life as well.
@@fwhitey7686Fact is most sociopaths are in the military, CEOs or in prison. Also a fact that they don't respond to fear. They have so little feeling that they report not feeling broken bones. So yeah that would make buds a lot easier. I have a ton of emotion. Glad you do too
