  • I'm starting to realize how complex this radio is and tracking down the cause of the motorboating is going to be difficult. The best I can hope, for at this point, is to learn more about the radio by reading the service manual, studying the schematic and poking around the radio.

I found your channel looking for the SP-600. By the way, the BK Sweep/Function generator same as yours, was part of my first bench after Tech school in 1981. I traded it since I have extensive collection of Hp/Keysight and Tektronix gear new and vintage. Well the BK found its way back 40 years later. I look forward to your videos, regardless of my electronics career. There’s always something to learn from somebody as your experience!

Can you tell us the model of probe antenna you are using? I've tried probe antennas in the past that wouldn't receive anything so it would be interesting to see one that really works.

Hello Jim. The only thing I can suggest at this point is to do a test of all tubes then proceed as needed. I do also have a Hammarlund radio but it is the 170A which is only a double conversion type and without the tuning indicator meter. The problem I found was silver mica disease in the first conversion IF strip!! Hope your 180 does not have that problem!! Yikes!! I am still thinking it's a capacitor somewhere maybe in the AVC line or audio detector and amp line up. I don't know my mind gets a little foggy with this one too! Wishing you luck!
