  • WATCH CHANNEL VIDO FOR FULL EXPLANATION! If you live in the US, you probably know the highways around you pretty well, but don’t have a clue once you leave your comfort zone. Luckily, there’s actually an order to the highways, and once you know it, it’s much harder to get lost (that’s not a guarantee)...

    Good explanation. I would add that among the even numbers going east-west, if it ends in a 0 then it tends to go a very long way. If it's even but doesn't end in 0, it tends to be short. For the north-south, it's odd. If it ends in 5, it tends to go very long. If it ends in any other odd number, it tends to be short. I live in Phoenix and our I-17 exists only to connect Phoenix to Flagstaff, and the I-10 to the I-40, respectively.

    Interstates are also numbered by their posistion in the US. East-West interstates are numbered highest in the north, lowest in the south. North-South interstates are numbered lowest in the west, highest in the east. These numbers roughly represent the % of country either south of the road, or west of the road. You are referring to US Highway 95. These are not part of the interstate system. However, they also have a method behind their numbering system. Odd US highways run north south while even number ones run east west. Additionally, smaller digit odd number highways start in the East while larger odd number ones start in the west. Example: US HWY 1 travels north south through eastern states while US HWY 101 travels in California, Oregon, and WA, close to the Pacific coast. Lower even US HWY roads traverse the northern part of the US (example US HWY 2) while larger US numbered HWYS travel the southern part of the US (example US HWY 66).

    I learned that when I was younger. Very helpful because I traveled a lot without GPS. Just maps! I wish Mexico was as understandable.

    I did not know this information and I’m very happy to have learned it. I have driven across the country multiple times and never noticed. I’m old (36) so used to rely on maps but now gps but gps can be wrong! Mine recently took me in a circle No where near my destination lol

    3 digit highways that “shoot off main highways” that begin with an even number are either outer belts or re-connect to itself. 3 digit highways that begin with an odd number is simply a highway short-cuts derived from a main highway…!! FYI

    I'm a truck driver so I know damn near all interstates. I've been on all interstate highways in the continental US. It's very easy to understand the US interstate system and the US highway system. State highways and county roads can become problematic in some states. Nothing hard about learning how to navigate without using GPS.

    "Lots of weird exceptions" is correct. I remember learning this info as a young driver, then learning some of the hiway logistics and sharing all this info with friends while driving. Only to be bombarded with questions about why the north & south odd number highways and east west is always even... is not working 🤣🤣

    The 3 digit highways are coded as well. If the first digit is even then it connects to the corresponding 2 digit interstate that follows. If the first digit is odd it only connects on one end to the interstate. For example I495 connects to 95 on both ends. I395 is only connected to 95 on one end.

  • @joeblack007
    @joeblack007 2 года назад

    When I was younger, the two 495s in the northeast threw me off. There is a 495 in Delaware, it spins off of 95 and rejoins later down the road. The other 495 is in Virginia. It is the beltway around Washington DC. Funny thing about the beltway is if you miss your exit, do not panic. Just keep driving, it will come back around because you are driving in a circle.

    I grew up in the 90s where we had to read road maps for road trips and my mom had taught me about the odd numbers going north-south and even numbers going west-east but I had no idea about the last 2 digits in a 3 digit highway lead you to the 2 digit highway

    To add to this, the U.S. highway system that predates the Interstate highway system is numbered similarly but in reverse. Highway 1 runs north-south along the east coast and highway 101 runs north-south along the west coast.

    More information: if it’s at three digit number, then the first digit represents the type of highway it is. If that first digit is even then it is a parallel loop to the main highway, which is the last two digits. If the first digit is odd, then it is a branch that goes away from or to the main highway, which is the last two digits. Thus, I- 295 runs parallel to I-95 and eventually merges back unto I-95. I-395 goes away from I -95 or towards I-95 if you’re driving in the opposite direction.

    The three digit ones have a meaning also. (Even is a loop) 495 the 4 is loop, 695 the 6 is farther from the city center. if it is a 395 the 3 (ODD number) is a spur as in, into or away from the center, 595 would be a longer spur. Larger is longer.
