- There are many ways to finish edges of leather, such as several styles of lacing that actually cover the edge of the leather. But what if the edge is not covered? In this video we will show you how to finish those exposed edges.

Great video! God bless!
Super useful 👍
How to you slick tandy pre cut belts?
He says you can use gum tracaganth OR water. Which one is better?
Not complicated for me but a easy one to use.
yoooooii Mr Hurst is the goat .I made the sickest belt .You would be proud .someday I will smoke a blunt with you.
Does this edge kote go for any color of leather, or are there color variations for the edge kote? I want to finish a purple colored leather.
They come in many colors, some stores can prepare custom colors even

Thank you Mr Hurst, this is such a clear video, so easy to follow. You are a great teacher.
You are a great teacher. Thank you Mr Hurst!
Just got a new IWB holster with rough finished edges and your video provided me with more than enough knowledge to finish it properly - Thank you sir.
This is a really good video. I took an interest in this after seeing a lot of simple leather pieces at a festival booth that had no edge finish at all, and saw how shabby they looked. After I started working with leather a bit myself, I knew I didn't want my finished pieces to look like the ones from that booth.
Great video! Straight to the point and thorough!
Thank you so much for this informative video, the edge is definitely the first thing to go for leather items...
George you videos are very good.. You explain everything very well...Thank you
very informative, just what i was looking for. thank you and great music. keep her country

Old school!!! Super helpful and clear video! :)
nice and very relaxing to watch.
Thank you so so much! You have solved one of my questions!:)
Thank you mr hurst you are the best master
Yes
Thank You, again.
So quick simple and to the point. Many thanks Mr Hurst. Answered all my questions on the most proffessional looking but cost effective and simple way of finishing the edge on a leather bucket bag project I am about to undertake. I was considering using an acrylic leather paint after burnishing with gum tragacanth but would the paint stay adhered to the leather edge as much as the 'Edge-Kote'?
thanks for your help
The steadiness of you hand is extraordinary.
Thank you.
Thanks a lot
Great vid,ty
I wonder how many non-native speakers are wondering where they can buy some “elbow grease”...? 😂 Great vid!
thank you
Hello greetings from Berlin Germany, mister Horst the quality that you have for getting the point across is SUPERB! Thank you.
I have a questionI: I been using edge kote for some belts but after a couple of days it's start to peel off almost like thin skin. is it normal? and in which order should i apply the edge kote combined with gum tragacant, because i have the feeling that if i apply the gum first than the leather will not absorb the edge kote properly. please HeLp...
Thank you in advance. ( :
what if you have a thin piece of leather that is not stiff and too soft to use the edge bevel ?
The same thing applies to very thin leather only it is more difficult to slick the edge. I use a buffing wheel in a drill press for most of my edges and it works well on thinner leather. For colors, you can use a dye mix (mix your own) that comes close the color of the project then slick the edge. Use the neutral edge kote, bees wax or gum tragacanth. No beveling is necessary.
Do u have to use the edge note or can u just leave it? I like the natural look without that brown edge.
where can I buy "elbow grease"? Hahah..great videos!
Just curious, but why use Edge Kote rather than just dying the edges and finishing with gum trag or a similar method?
What's the difference between Fiebing's Edge Kote, Edge Enamel and the Edge Dye?
Does this also work If I used faux leather? Thanks.
it is a personal preference if you want a contrasting effect, but you can go with just a natural edge using gum tragacanth, neutral (clear) edge kote or bees wax, You can also 'dye' the edge white then use the neutral edge kotel or gum trag. Also, a neutral shoe polish can be used when you slick the edge.
do you have to use edge kote, or can you use regular leather dye?
Three years ago I was given a nice watch as a present. The edges of the leather strap were sealed with some kind of elastic stuff. After a couple of months that stuff started to get sticky like bubble gum. I could peel it off, just like that.
I need to ask a question that may sound dumb but I’ve only recently gotten into leather crafting, so I’m new & learning. I noticed a slight discoloration after applying my Gum Trag. in the area where it slightly ran a bit. I was antiquing so it didn’t matter. But is there a way to apply it that Mr. Hurst didn’t mention ? I thought about maybe applying a resist like leather sheen beforehand but didn’t know for sure. I’d like to thank you for your answer & help in advance. Thanks sooooooo very very much.
Mark in Ky. 👌😋
There are many different variables to question in a situation like this. Try using less Gum Trag? Burnishing without Gum Trag for that project? Maybe try Beez wax or burnishing naturally and seal with a finish like super sheen? Best advice is to test many different ways before committing.
Can fiebings edge kote be thinned with water ? I have a 1/2 used bottle , & it has become too thick.
hello, what if i am using very thin leather, like 1 mm thickness, especially for bags and purses and the color is pink or blue? what should i do and what should i use? thank you
Random question but if you have for example white leather do you still use the black or brown edge kote ??
Can I use a q-tip for the edge kote?
Hei, I have handbags made of leather and I wonder how the do the finishing with the same colour fo the handbag, because I dont find orange not even green edge kote. thanks
If I want to dye, punch holes, bevel, and slick the edges of my belt, what order should I do that in?
Great question! We'd recommend punching holes and beveling first, followed by dying, and slicking the edges last.
Hi there. I was wondering if these techniques apply to working with fake leathers/vinyls/pvcs etc?
I've been trying to find the equivalent technique to this but I haven't been able to find anything at that applies to fake leathers rather than the real thing.
Does anyone know if 'Edge Kote' can be used for this purpose?
*gasp* There is such a thing as FAKE leather?!?! *faints in horror*
you can use an adjustable edge creaser
Mr. Hurst, what if the edge IS covered and you want to change the color to maybe a deeper color?
I use beeswax and a wood burnisher. Don't like plastic burnishers. They have no grain to them. I find that grain makes all the difference. But not if you get a burnisher that has the grain running the same direction as the groove. Grain has to be apposed to the direction of the groove (at least for a first pass).
Probably very stupid question of me..., but If I want to finish faux leather edges, is technique similar?
on English made holsters, I noticed a fine line that runs parallel to all the edges. How did they get that line there? It's like a small indentation on the leather (no leather was removed).
I know this is a reply to a 5-year old question, but one way I've seen that done is to use something such as a drafting compass.
How do you slick the edge of lighter leather, like
+Grindstone Using something like a horn creaser is ideal for slicking the edges of thin leathers - www.tandyleather.com/en/product/horn-creaser
Tandy Leather Thank you!
Grindstone
I got a (potentially stupid) question, I've seen a lot of (single layer) belts, straps and collars with stitching along the edges around the project, why is that? is just for decorative purposes or as some kind of technique to reinforce or protect the leather or what? Idk, I'm clueless :P
MustangBrother101 Great question! Stitching on a single layer is likely for decoration to give it the appearance of double layered leather.
MustangBrother101 ,
I am trying to use this product from tandy, but it does not seem thick enough as on Coach bags Help
Properly finishing your edges before applying edge coat is important. You can also add multiple layers of this product to get desired thickness.
will try layering, spoke to a clerk at Syracuse they suggested the thicker kote. I will have to drive back hope for some classes
will that edge tool help?
Yes, the edge tool will help the application.
thanks
Can edge kote be used on an edge that has been slicked with gum tragacanth?
Yessir!
+Tandy Leather Ive had bleeding problems with this exact issue. Beveled, sanded and burnished with gum trag. painted edges with edge kote and dried for 24 hours. rubbing a wet finger over it gets the edges to bleed. any thoughts?
Jerseyfirefighter157 Great question! Generally you'll need at least a minimal amount of texture for the edging to adhere to. If it's too well finished prior to Edge Kote, there can be issues with adhesion.
+Tandy Leather Dyed edge on a belt, slicked with gum trag, let it dry and applied Edge Kote. The edges by the buckle cracked and peeled within a week. Client not very happy. Not a good product for a gun belt. I'll never use it again. New process: bevel and sand edge; slick with glycerine saddle soap and canvas; dye; dry; slick with saddle soap and canvas; dry; paraffin the edges; buff with canvas; finish with top coat. No more Edge-Kote on any belt I make. Ever.

It is a plastic pulley wheel.
That edge slicker looks like a plastic pulley wheel
most natural come gum tragancanth and water only, painting not have beauty and natural to edge. only some place but no normal
No, you don't. I don't like dyed edges either. After the edges are slicked and nice and dry, I like to rub bee's wax along the edge and buff it in real good with a scrap of denham. It'll give it a nice look and seal up the pores in the leather.
Denim and canvas both work well for finishing edges.
