Me and my husband just got stationed out in gowen and we’ve been looking for somewhere to fish and how to fish.. needless to say we’ve been binge watching all your boise River videos! So awesome! Thanks for posting!
Hey thanks for the comment! Glad you found the videos helpful! Shoot us a message on Facebook or instagram and let us know how fishing is going! The Boise will be pretty high until mid July probably but after that fishing will be good.
Loved your video. Great fishing in town. I fished that river years ago, but only stockers. We were below a small damn. Somewhere in town. All my family lived around there. I live in Springfield oregon. Good fishing as well. Thanks.
Beautiful fish! Awesome video! I always learn so much watching your videos. I went from catching one fish every few times going out to catching 20-30 every other time, at least. Its been awesome. Thank you guys for the inspiring content!
That is awesome! Glad to hear that! Appreciate the comment!
Matt posted. Sit down and be quiet. Pay attention. This is going to be good.🎣🎣
Hope you enjoyed it! Always appreciate the comment!
I'm stoked to get in the river. I have a fly set up, but have never used it. This is way more my speed! Can't wait to check out some spots around Eagle.
Always enjoy watching you fish the Boise.... and I take mental note of your technique, bait, and all the teaching you provide. Do you only fish Rapala's in the Spring/Summer/Fall?? and is it bait (shrimp/worms/scented yarn balls) all winter long?? I really enjoy watching your Rap SR5 video's.
Hey thank you! I appreciate the comment.
I typically use the Raps when things are a bit warmer. Once the water temp starts to cool like it is now I feel like you can still get a few on Raps but not the 20-30 fish in a couple hours like you can with scent.
Never been really successfully fishing the boise hopefully ill be able to give it a go again!
Get out there! :-)
Awesome video man! I'm the guy you met at the mcdevitt pond earlier this year, I may have been a bit of a show off so I apologize, I was trying for the steelhead with shrimp but I have pretty much given up on them. I will have to try shrimp for the trout because it seems to work great!
Yep I remember that day! You caught some nice ones! Hope all is well!
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS All is well!
Very cool! Beautiful brown 🙌🏻
Thank you!
I’m trying this tomorrow!! Love the video and thanks for sharing!
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
Beautiful brown
Thank you!
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS We ride out scooters along the path all the time need to take a fishing rod one of these times I never fished it because I'm from out of town lol
Those scooters are a great way to hole hop!
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS they absolutely are :)
Your killing them. Wish i was there. Your giving me a reason to get better Soon!!
I hope you’ll be on the river soon!
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS thank you
Nice fishing in the cold
Fellow Idahoan here. Spend a lot of time fishing the Boise for trout. My preferred method has always been split shot to nightcrawler and it’s not failed me yet though I don’t nearly as many big trout as yourself. Would love to hear some suggestions. Thanks!
I'd try other stretches of river and keep working those deeper holes until a big one decides to play. They're in there for sure! Have you tried inflating your worms so they have more float?
@@OLDHATOUTDOORSgood advice man I’ll put it into practice this Sunday. I haven’t tried inflating the worms on the river yet. Thats usually something I’ll do when I bottom fish a pond or lake but I’ll be giving it a shot. I’ll try shrimp too since it seems to do you well. Tight lines man thanks again!
@@gagetaylor769 let me know how you do!
I know this is an older video but I’ve been really enjoying your stuff. Haven’t caught a trout on the raps yet, but a couple Pikeminnow. Crazy how small some are for a SR5! You ever fish around eagle? I’ve been struggling to find fish, so many holes that look promising but not much luck. Looking forward to trying some scent bait
I just fished around Eagle a week ago. The river had just started to go down and the fish were fairly active. That being said I do feel like it’s better Fishing closer to Boise in my opinion.
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS what bait are you using this time of year? Also have you ever offered guided trips??
I use Raps until the leaves in the river make it really hard to cast and then I switch to our winter baits. And unfortunately I cannot guide in Idaho. Check out our Old Hat Fishing RUclips channel though for more fishing content. Thanks for watching!!!!
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS well guess what… caught a 24” rainbow yesterday on the shad rap! Biggest trout of my life! Thanks for the guidance man!
That’s a GIANT!!!!! Wow!
Seems like they're not hitting the rapalas right now. Do you prefer bait this time of year?
As the water temp drops I find the fish to be less aggressive. You can still catch them on Raps but this is so much more productive. 25-30 fish in a couple hours using this method. I have another video that I filmed yesterday with even BETTER results. They're going nuts right now!
what are you using for bait.. would love to hit the Boise River again

Hey Matt, loved the video. What type of shrimp do you use? I’m semi new to fishing and I’m getting a couple more of my high school friends into it and they’d like to catch river rainbows like this. Thank you sm
Any shrimp will work. You may just have to cut it or pinch it into the right size depending on the bite.
@@OLDHATOUTDOORSthank you sm
How do you keep the shrimp on? I live here in Boise, let’s go fish and talk about the gospel!
Ya that's the big challenge! Keeping shrimp on long enough to catch a fish. I've gotten better at it but it still can be difficult. Have you been out fishing?
Hey brother, if you don’t mind. What size did you get those waders and what size shoes are you?
Size medium waders and I wear size 11 in wading boots.
What's the limit on trout in the Boise?
There are different limits in different stretches of the river. Most of the river is 6 (although i rarely keep any) but you just have to know what area you’re fishing.
How excited are you for the new scheels?
Ya Scheels is great!
Where on the river was this about? Eagle?
East Boise.
I've been relatively successful in town lately with nightcrawlers but I have a problem with gut hooking fish that I'd rather release. I either eat them or cut the line and leave the hook inside. How do I get around this?
Hey thanks for the comment. I feel like that happens more with the small stockers then the bigger fish but overall it doesn't happen too much. On certain days when the fish are active I hit them right away when I feel the bite and seem to have better luck that way. But ya, the alternative is to cut the line and most likely they'll be fine.
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS right on. I really dig the videos. Extremely helpful. Thanks a ton!
That’s easy. Answer is anywhere. I fly fishes the Boise river for 3 years and all through winter. I would have to break the ice out of my eyelets every few casts. The whole river has fish year round
Sure, all stretches of river hold fish but there's a lot of places I wouldn't waste my time fishing in the winter if I want to actually catch fish.
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS i caught fish litterly anywhere on that river . good fish. but maybe its different for flyfishing
