What cabs can you plug into what heads? What happens when you run an 8 ohm and 4 ohm cab in parallel? Will plugging this cab up set my head on fire?

Piece of cake. For the SVT, if using two 8-ohm cabs, set the amp impedance to 4 ohms. If using two 4-ohm cabs, set the amp impedance to 2 ohms. If using three cabs where two cabs are 8 ohms each and the third cab is 4 ohms, set the amp impedance to 2 ohms. If using four 8-ohm cabs, set the amp impedance to 2 ohms.

I like the amp a lot I am running it with a 4x10 and a 2x10, sometimes 2x10 and a 1x15, both ways it sounds great.
Just recently bought that second cab i was talking about. I asked the guys at my local music store for some more information as well, and indeed, there's definitely 200 watts going through both cabs (and a shitload of bass coming from the 1x15)
As for volume, it does get louder, but not that much (3 dbs is probably about right).
If you have a 4ohm only head, i'd go for a nice 8 ohm cab, they're much more common + it's easy to add another 8 ohm cab later on

My Ampeg B25B head was designed to play through a 2X15 cab in series at 16 Ohms. I run it with two 15" ~ 8 ohm cabinets, so that would be a 4 ohm load. My tech obtained a schematic of the head, and he told me that if I plugged an 8 ohm cab in one speaker outlet and another 8 ohm in the other speaker jack, that there is a switching jack (or something, I forget) that shows a 16 ohm load.

For calculating the impedance when 2 cabs are in parallel its a lot easier to just calculate it with this method:
(Z1^-1 + Z2^-1)^-1 = Ztotal
Z1 being the impedance of cab 1 and Z2 being the impedance of cab 2.

thanks for the video I have a better understanding..my question is if I have a 1000 watt amp and two cabs at 850 watts how much power would I get out of the cabs? I'm thinking about getting an ampeg full stack I have a carvin stack 4x10 1x18 now and bought it as advertised and for some reason don't feel I have the power I should and have trouble hearing myself over my guitarist Mesa half stack and I'm at full volume and clipping like crazy

I have a marshall mg100dfx turned in a head.. and this amp has 100w. At the loudspeaker output it only says (use minimum 4ohms) so my question is: I own a marshall 1936 2x12 running in parallel so each speaker has 8ohms and 75w each (celestions g12-75)... Can I plug my mg100dfx in stereo (in only one speaker) with my joyo bluejay bantamp on another?
The higher resistence (8ohms) of the cabinet will low the voltage of 100w and I won't blow my 75w celestion? Thank you very much!!
from what I know is you will get your full head wattage because 2x8ohms=4ohms. I am new at this to but i did learn that. I have a 4ohm head but i am having a hard time finding a nice 4ohm 4x10 cab. I was also told that using a 4ohm head to an 8ohm single cab you only lose about 3db's which isn't much. I just asked a question myself here so i'll see what Dino say's

The manual of my Engl Invader also says:"An 8-ohm cabinet connected to one of the 4-ohm jacks -in combination- with a 16-ohm cabinet connected to one of the 8-ohm jacks. Summary: 8Z + 16Z -> connected to 4-ohm + 8-ohm output".
P.S. Yellow Circuit Board Unit is in EXCEPTIONAL Condition.

Is it OK to hook up ampeg 4x10 hlf to yamaha p7000 pa amp?
or is it bad for both amp &speakers?
Also, I didn't know that the yellow circuit board unit was never opened. therefore, I broke the factory seal. Removing the originial tubes was very difficult as well and re-installing them and the new ones took about a half-hour each - the slots were that new!
Thanks for the lesson on Ohms, but I would like to understand how the interplay between amp and cabinet wattage should be managed. For instance, I'm looking at the SVT-CL rated at 300 watts (2 or 4 ohms) and two SVT-15E Cabinets, rated at 200 watts RMS and 400 watts peak, at 8 ohms. Will this work? I'm lost over the wattage issue.
go by RMS , ROUND MEAN SQUARED, peak is for a surge or such.... divide peak in half and you get PROGRAM, most folks font hear about program, now.... divide program in half & you get RMS ... thats the watts your amp will be running at during operation....and if a speaker is rated at 100 watts peak then your gonna want an amp that is 200 watts RMS ... ok... ohms ? lets say your amp is 4 ohms ... you can daisy chain two (2) -eight ohm speakers. or 4 - sixteen (16) ohm speakers.. now. lets say your amp is 2 ohm , then you can daisy chain (2)two- 4 ohm speakers or (4)four- 8 ohm speakers or (8) eight- sixteen ohm speakers.. see the pattern ? two eight ohm speakers daisy'd will produce a 4ohm impeadance load.. i hope this helps.
ok Ive got a 2x12 cabinet loaded with 2 16 ohm speakers and it's wired in series. I have an amp that say "8 ohm minimum". am I good or should i make changes?

Hi. Dino. Good interesting video. Hope you don't mind me asking. I know the more you drop the ohms the more power you get from your amp. Of cause if it's compatible. My question is: Is it true that the lower the ohms the less quality the play back? For example: My amp is 2 ohms compatible, but it is 4 ohms too. Would staying at 4 ohms give me a more cleaner and more refined bass. Compared to 2 ohms?

instert94 In theory the lower resistance (ohms), increases the rate of power flow from the amp. So the sound coming from the speakers will be very loud and cranking, but the amp will not cope with the excess power returning back to it and will overheat and shut off (hopefully!!) . The other end of the spectrum is a high ohms cabinet ie 8 or 16 ohms. A 4ohm rated amplifier trying to drive power into higher resistance cab is like putting a kink in a garden hose; flow is reduced so the amp will have to work harder to drive the speakers, which in turn could also damage the circuitry but most noticeably it will be quieter and not reach a high volume. Your amp must have some good thermal and circuitry protection to run a 2 ohm cabinet if it's intended use is 4 ohms. My amp can happily run 500watts through a single 4 ohm 600watt cabinet, or 2x 8 ohm cabinets at 250/300watts each; total resistance is always 4ohms so it will will deliver 500 watts. Keeping your amp at 4 ohms will deliver the best sound and longevity. Hope this helps!
Please help if you can. Okay O purchased a Peavey Vypyr 60 watt tube amp. The cab has 1 16 ohm speaker. However, I took the guts of the tube amp and placed the in my old Marshall head.
Then I remembered I have a cab with 2 speakers in it both are 8 ohm. Is it safe to connect my peavey head to this cabinet?
The other question I have is now if you say yes to the first question does this mean now because I'm going through a cabinet with 2 8 ohm speakers that I've now divided the power of the amp from 60 to 30 watts?

Ok I understand the impedance part, but what's the deal with the power rating?
For example the SVT-7 pro head, what cabinet would be a better fit (other than taste) for this head: the PF 410 HLF or SVT 410 HLF? With that I mean in terms of power handling.

I'm thinking I would like a stack of two 410 cabinets. I've been looking at the SVT-7PRO head. That leaves me to choose either two SVT-410HLFs or two PN-401HLFs. Based on this video, it sounds like two SVT-410HLFs (4 ohms) won't work. And two PN-410HLFs seem like overkill for the 1000 watt SVT-7PRO. Do I need another head? Please advise, I've got no help at all from Ampeg or Guitar Center. I don't have unlimited money, but I'd like to get something really nice.

But I was wondering; I'm using a 200 watt head, rated for 4 ohms, into an 8 ohm cab (also 200 watts), so I guess I'm getting something like 150 watts out of this setup?
Now, if I were to add another cab (a 115 cab) at 8 ohms, what happens with the wattage?
Will I get the full 200 watts from my head, or will each cab put out just 100 watts, losing power and loudness?
Watts are based on impedance, so you should get all 200 Watts.

This brings up a question, your Ampeg BA-210v2 is advertised as 450w RMS. But in the user manual says it has two 16 OHM, 10" speakers which is a 8 ohm load. The amp puts out 450 watts @ 4 OHMS and 283 watts @ 8 OHMS. So really the Ampeg BA-210v2 is a 283 watt 2x10 combo. Please clarify this for me if I am off.
You are correct Michael. To achieve the full 450 watts, you need to connect another 8 ohm cabinet. This will bring the overall impedance between the combo and the 8 ohm cabinet to 4 ohms total

I take exceptionally Great Care of my Gear and did not damage anything other than leaving evidence on the screw heads that the cover has been removed. So, by how much did I decrease the value of this yellow circuit board unit?
I emailed Marshall with this situation/question: "I have a Marshall Origin 212 cabinet that I want to pair my DSL1H with. The potential problem is the Origin 212 cabinet has two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel making it 8 Ohms. I wired it in series making it a 32-Ohm unit. Will this be an issue for the 16-Ohm DSL1 head? Can I use a 32-Ohm cabinet with the 16-Ohm DSL1H?"

"The DSL-1 is a valve amplifier and therefor the Impedance must be correctly matched to avoid damage to the output transformer.
I guess the only way you could use the Origin cab safely would be to disconnect one of the speakers.
If you need it to be an 8 Ohm cab for other amps, maybe switch one of the speakers so 8 & 16 can be selected?

Confused and no sites has clear answers on my question ,hoping you or someone here can help..so here's my question : " I want to connect a speaker cab behind my combo amp .There is already 2 speaker output jacks behind my combo. On top of the output #1 ,it's written {4 ohms}. And on top of the output#2, it's written {8 ohms}. But when I plug a speaker in either of the output jacks, it disconnects the internal built in speaker of my combo amp. My internal built in speaker is a "Celestion Vintage 80’s", 8 ohms....It's either the cab or the built in speaker ,Why? . The goal is to sit my combo on top of a cab and have both speakers running as i always did with my previous amps.So these 2 speaker outputs are totaly useless. Has to be a reason or purpose . I'm tempted to ignore those 2 speaker outputs and pull out the internal 2 wires from the amp and try my own connection...But why can't I use them 2 speaker outputs, Does'nt make sens to me. Anybody's help appreciated . If one wants to view my amp and rear panel for more info... My amp is a Randall RG50TC .

I purchased two Ampeg SVP Pro's from Guitar Center Online with one being from 1995 and one fro 1997.
One has a green circuit board and the other a yellow circuit board. Each one sounds great but the yellow circuit board is much more powerful.
I've tried to balance the power between the two, but to no avail. Does this stand to reason because of the time between them?
Id check tubes and tube bias. Im not sure on it but tubes in the head and the bias and even if you have some slightly dirty components can cause this as well.

Ok, I have an Orange Micro Dark which says on the back that it requires a minimum 8 ohm load. It also has a solid state power section. Would going to 4 ohms damage the amp at all?
Don't do it. Minimum means you can go higher but not lower than 8

What happens if I wire two separate 4ohm speakers to the same output terminal of an amplifier?
Example: I’m using 1 amp capable of doing 2ohm or 4ohm. Sometime I only need one speaker and sometimes for more Power I need 2 speakers. So if I take the same amp output and send out 4 wires (or 2 wires to each cabinet. Left and right/ positive and negative) will that be 2ohms final impedance?
Sounds like "dual mode," I believe. For example, the Ampeg 8x10 cab is 4 ohms. But in dual mode, the top 4x10 part of the cab is 8 ohms and the bottom 4x10 part of the cab is 8 ohms. So it’s basically the equivalent of using two 8-ohm cabs, which would still be a 4-ohm load for the amp. But for your case, it looks like a 2-ohm load since you're using two 4-ohm cabs.
I have an SVT CL and I have been using it with 2 8 ohm cabinets. I have them daisy chained.Should I continue diasy chaining them or should I be running from the 2 speaker outlets to the cabs?

I believe they are both the same. You can do either way. But it's still a 4-ohm load regardless. I just use both speaker outlets for each cab. Daisy-chaining is more useful if using a lot of cabs.

Yes and no. It will get about half wattage from the head but gives you the option to add another 8 ohm cab to create a 4 ohm load..
hey buddy, ive got a marshall mg15 fx, that im going to convert into a head. im going to build a cabinet, but im unsure what ohms the speakers need to be? think the one in the marshall is 8 ohms. id like to fit two 50w speakers to the cab. do they both need to be 8 ohms.

Assuming that the original speaker is in fact 8 ohms, you could fit two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel, or two 4 ohm speakers wired in series.
So it really makes no difference if you run 2 cabinets from the back of the amp, or daisy chaining them then? Ohms wise of course. Good to know.
A daisy chain would be a circuit with the cabinets in SERIES. PARALLEL is when you connect more than one cab to the same outputs of the amp. It MAY make the difference between OK or FRIED! There is a difference with solid state and tube amps also... solid state amps can pair with higher ohm cabs causing only less volume potential, while it would be damaging for a tube amp to try to power a cabinet with too high of an ohm rating.
stupid question I am playing an svt -4 with a 1x15 cab- If Im looking for way heavy low end is it a good idea to add another 1x15 classic?

Not Stupid. The 410HLF has the "heaviest" or darkest / deepest frequency response out of the classic Ampeg cabs. But mixing it with a 15 may not be the sound you want. Mixing cabs gives a different tone in itself. If you can get the tone you are looking for from your 15, just not when it's loud, then buy another 15. If the tone isn't heavy enough on "half" volume you consider a 410HLF. But the HLF will also be more punchy. And I think it's 4 ohm, so it might need rewireing.
At 2:40, you say that the power ratings for cabinets never change. So does this mean that if two identical cabinets rated for 200 watts @ 8 ohms are hooked up parallel, they will still each receive 8 ohms, even though the amp is putting out 4 ohms?
Chad Collier speakers have impedance. They does not receive impedance. If an output transformer was designed to offer a 4 Ohm load output, so the total load for that output transformer have to be 4 Ohm. If you put two 8 Ohm speakers in parallel each 8 Ohm “see” 4 Ohm, but the total speaker impedance is 4 Ohm load and the output transformer “sees” the total 4 ohm speaker load. This way the output transformer load and the parallel wired speaker load are matched.
So is it possible to hook 2 810 cabs to one head?
It depends on the head! If you're talking about an SVT-CL or SVT-VR, yes it is possible as both of those heads are rated at either 2 or 4 ohms.
So... if I have a 500W @ohms amp, I can hook up two cabinets of 600W at 8ohms in parallel, ant its cool right?
and what happens if one of the cabinets is 1000W and both run at 8ohms? is that fine as well?

If @ = 4 then yes. But if you run one 600w cab and one 1000w cab you should only use 1200w total. As in 600w + 600w. If you try a 1600w amp and max out the volume your 600w cab will blow it's speakers.
And make sure you read the RMS watts on the cabs, not the "music watts" or "peak power".
I have a question. Is it bad to use a 8 ohm cabinet on a head that is rated to be ran at 4 and 2 ohm?..I don't want to damage the amp.

I'm new to this I really need help ampeg!... I recently ordered a pf800 head and a pf1/15 cab. I ordered them before watching this video. I was thinking about buying the pf4/10 cab and using both the 1/15 and 4/10 cabs with my pf 800 for gigs. Can I use these two cabs with a pf 800?
+Chris salinas Both the PF-410 and PF-115 are rated at 8 ohms. When you connected those cabs together you get a total load of 4 ohms. The PF-800 head is designed to handle a 4 ohm load. But, it delivers 400 watts when a 4 ohm load is present vs. the 800 watts it delivers when it sees an 8 ohm load.
So, you are sacrificing some power. But you are getting a lot more speaker area with the extra cabs.
So, it can certainly depend on how "loud" you need it to get.
It won't harm the amp at all though. Of course, if you can get that 115 first and then TRY the 410 to see for yourself how it affects volume, that would be the best bet. It's something not easily described.

+Chris salinas It does have a lot of power, so if you crank it something like that could happen. You have to use your ears and will get to know the point when your speakers are over exerting. The PF-410HLF would be a nice match if you are concerned about this.,
So here is a question: if I have a 500 watt head at 4 ohms, and I want to use two cabinets, what is the ideal wattage for each cabinet assuming they both have an 8 ohm impedance? Would it be 500 for each?

250 RMS watts each. Or 500 "music watts" / "peak power" each. Assuming it's not a tube powered amp. Then you would need a lot more to max it out.

Have SVT-400T and 2pc 8 ohms Ashdown cabinets. Owners manual says output power is in slave mode 2 x 200w to 4 ohms or in bridged mode 400w to 8 ohms. How do I get out total 400w using both my 8 ohms cabs?

You have to rewire the speakers inside the cabinets so the cabs become 4 ohm (for stereo / dual mono outputs) or 16ohm (for single bridged output and daisy chaining) cabs. Definitively go for 4 ohm. Then you can use only one cab if you want. You can use the stereo function. And you can use them with other amps. And if you ever buy an SVT tube amp you can chain them together for the 2 ohm output.

Have bought new Ashdown ABM -cabinet and have sold old ones. This new one is also 8 ohm, but I'm getting enough power and good sound and if ever needed more, I'll use bridged mode.
So can I put a pf-350 at 4 ohms into a Laney 4 x 10 at 8 ohms without any dangers?
I believe so, but that the amp won't give you all 350 watts.
Does "never running a tube amp without a speaker load" mean dont run your amp head without a cab? sorry im new with understanding heads and cabs.
+NmG VapoR Yes, that's right. Running most tube heads without a cabinet can severely damage the head. There's a few exceptions like our PF-20T and PF-50T heads. But there are VERY FEW exceptions.
I have a question. What do you do if you have a 150 watt amp and a 150 watt amp head?

I found your explanation to be confusing. at about 3 minutes you began putting your hand on, or pointing at, different boxes. One that you earlier called an amplifier you now call a cabinet. you know which you mean, but I am left trying to reconcile which is which.

I just bought a used Ampeg B2R bass head that says it will do 200 watts at 8 ohm's or 300 watts at 4 ohm's. NOW, I have two Carvin cabs one 8 ohm 410 cab with a tweeter and a 4 ohm 18 inch speaker cab. From watching your video here I'm I right in guessing that what I have here is not a good combo?
It's not a good combo because your impedance will be 2.67 when combining these cabs and that will destroy your amp. (Your amp isnt able to handle a lower impedance then 4 ohm) Use the 18 inch and you will have the full 300 watts of power. Or buy another 8 ohm speaker cab to combine it with your 410 8 ohm cab. Then the impedance will also be 4 ohm. 8x8=64, 8+8=16, 64\6 =4 ohm. Hope you understand ;)
I understand it's just a bit of a bummer. I'll start looking around for one or maybe I can find an 8 x 10 Ampeg cab in any case I can't afford either one new right now so this will take sometime. Thanks for your help sir.
Maybe you can try just that single 8 ohm cab. Then your amp produces 200 watts and maybe thats enough for you. I play in a pretty loud rockband with an pf350 and just a svt210 av cab (the pf350 produces 250 watts at 8ohm) and that works for me!

Oh snap! Don't ever run without a cab?!!! I was tracking direct. If no cab is 2ohms, then why is the VST Classic rated at 2 & 4 ohms? If 2 x 4 ohms equals 2.67 ohms and you advise to avoid that situation, then... well.... is that a cab on the planet earth that matches the SVT classic?
The 2.67 was achieved from hooking up mismatched cabinets (8ohm and 4ohm cabs) of you hook up two 4 ohm cabinets to the back of your amp, that'll give you the 2ohm load its rated for

Does Ampeg have a cab that can help me? I play bass through a Sovtek 45 Watt tube amp. It has 3 outs: a 4 Ohm, an 8 Ohm, and a 16 Ohm. One of each. I'm running the 8 Ohm out to a 4x10 8 Ohm cabinet. Sounds incredible, but I need some bottom end and would like to run another cabinet, like a 1x12. Any ideas from Ampeg? Can I safely just add a 4 Ohm 1x12 or 1x15 from the 4 Ohm out?

I’ve always heard that it was ok to plug a head into a cabinet with a higher impedance than the amp is rated for, but NOT okay to plug a amp into a cabinet with a lower impedance than the head is rated for. Is that accurate?
Although it seems like there are so many output options on modern amps that there’s no real reason to not match it exactly anyway.
The Lowmein Pretty much true. A higher impedance on the cab than the amp will reduce the volume, and can apparently do damage in the long term, but if you’re in a pinch you can easily get away with it. On the flipside, running an amp with a minimum load of, say 4 ohms, into two 4 ohm cabs (which would give a total load of 2 ohms), will completely fuck the amp’s power section up, which could cost a hell of a lot to fix. Also, never under any circumstances turn on an amp without a speaker attached to the power section; this will fry your power tubes and transformers, which could easily be a complete write-off for your amp. Be careful out there dude

I used to suffer from impedance, but my doctor fixed me up with some Viagra and now I'm good to go.
Just recently bought that second cab i was talking about. I asked the guys at my local music store for some more information as well, and indeed, there's definitely 200 watts going through both cabs (and a shitload of bass coming from the 1x15)
As for volume, it does get louder, but not that much (3 dbs is probably about right).
If you have a 4ohm only head, i'd go for a nice 8 ohm cab, they're much more common + it's easy to add another 8 ohm cab later on
