You can also reduce antialiasing/Moire in Premiere and AE by applying the Mosaic effect to the layer or an adjustment layer and setting the horizontal and vertical resolutions to more than your footages resolution. If you're working in a 32bpc project in AE, you can fix this by applying Levels and setting the Clip to Output White to On.
what do you mean? I think I did not understand you because I tried both solutions in AE and don't see any difference. My clip is 1920x1080 so I configured the mosaic effect to 1922 horizontal blocks and 1082 vertical blocks. I also made the composition 32bpc and changed the levels effect setting of "clip to output white" from off to on. I don't see any of that fixing the moiré issue on my shot.
This was a LIFESAVER. I'm a new videographer and am working on a massive project for Goodwill. I had hours of footage where I didn't realize I was getting a moire effect and I have successfully edited it out! Thank you!
Thank you SOOOO much! I've been trying to get the moire out of some of my aerial videos for quite a few years. Your examples were perfect and make my videos so much better!
Alternative technique to easily apply the Gaussian blur to just the shirt with no annoying manual masking/tracking: copy the clip onto the video track above and temporarily disable the original clip > use a keying effect like Ultrakey on the duplicate clip to key out the color of the shirt > make adjustments as necessary to get the key covering the shirt as cleanly as possible > invert the key (now you theoretically have just the shirt appearing in the shot) > apply the Gaussian blur to the keyed clip > enable the original clip below. This obviously doesn’t work perfectly in every situation, like if the shirt is the same color as the background. But it can do the trick the majority of the time.
Thanks, I'm new to Premiere. This is really useful. As a photographer, when I have this problem, in photoshop we would add blur to the colour channel only. Thus retaining detail. Is there a way of doing this in Premiere?
Nice sweater, Alli!!! One of our favorite RUclipsrs Jeremy Jahns is constantly wearing things that create this effect. That's cool that you can reduce it a bit. Another great tutorial.
Actually, you can get a diffusion filter with a low intensity that you put on your lens, which will help with the issue too. For instance, the Pro Mist 1/8 (or 1/4) from Tiffen does a good job at it.
Awesome video. Thanks for the help with moire. Would you use this effect for a 20 minute long video? Also, what is the name of the song you used for this video?
Thanks! This effects will work for any length of video, but it will require more work to make sure the mask follows the issue the entire time. I would say it depends on the footage and the video, as well as what the video will be used for. The song is from the Epidemic Sound collection I believe; link is in the description, but I don't remember the exact song though, sorry. Have a great day!
That sounds like a complex project, and might require a program like After Effects with some advanced techniques to solve. However, it's also possible that it's too complicated to address and therefore not worth the time.
Hey what about a screen window for example? I seem to not be able to get the blur to do much with that. I am also using different software also, but I think this is a more difficult example of this problem.
A camera with that filter will definitely do a great job at dealing with it, and in most cases will work perfectly, but when it doesn’t, you can use this technique 😃
You can’t. It’s literally impossible unless you superimposed another shot over it. The point of this tutorial is to reduce the weird jittery look that comes with moire, so a blurred shirt is the compromise.
Same like Vic, didn’t know or heard about Moire until now we watch this tutorial 😄 Glad to know there is a way to remove / reduce it in Premiere Pro. Luckily we nerver wear any funny pattern clothes in the video that could create Moire (or maybe we don’t remember or realise it haha) As always great tutorial guys 👍🏻
Hi, i filmed a computer screen and can't seem to make it look sharp on premier pro. I've been researching deinterlace/flicker/moire, it still doesn't give me the effect i want. Could you do a video on that?
If you filmed your screen with a camera/lens , the result won’t look very good - a better approach is to use software and screen capture that way. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s much you can do in your situation. The effect we share in this video isn’t for screen flicker, interlacing, or frequency issues. Sorry!
@@AlliandWill Yes I guess so, but for now my level of skills is far away from corporate projects, so I've never been confronted to this kind of issues lol 😅
I didn't even know about the Moire effect. Luckily yen n I both don't wear clothes with these kinda fine lines. But very good to know how to remove it in case we're shooting with someone that rocks the lines in the future 👍
Ya we found out the hard way and eventually figured out how to deal with it! Not fun reviewing the footage the first time and seeing it and knowing you have to provide the final video to a client looking that way! Haha
100% try to avoid that! We’ve been on far too many shoots where we warn the people about it, but someone always shows up with a shirt like this, and the result doesn’t look good at all!! At least with this technique you can at least reduce it so it’s not so distracting!
I was flying to Florida and was cold so I picked it up at the airport in Chicago and didn’t even realize it was a sports team until someone pointed it out hahaha but go Bears! 🐻 😂
Thanks! This is fantastic. I started shooting drone footage of the skyline of Chicago and some buildings from far away are exhibiting the MOIRE effect. I searched for how to ger rid of it and this video came up on top. Great job on SEO and thank you for the spot on tip!

"When there's squiggly lines that appear because of lines, that's a Moire"
Haha 😂

Great technique to rid the Moire, thank you, but how would you eliminate the Color Aberration in the shirt?
I didn't know you had a RUclips page... The first every tutorial I watched on editing was by you so crazy!!! Thank you for everything.
Thank you for sharing that with me! Appreciate it! Lots of other tutorials on our channel too 😃👊🙌

I followed your video and successfully removed all the moire that my shirt caused! The Gaussian blur is amazing mathematics! Thank you!
That’s awesome to hear!
I have a jpg for print, but the gaussian blur in Photoshop did the trick! Thanks!
Hello, My mask doesn't show those buttons next to it, what did I do wrong?
Nice sweater, Alli!!! One of our favorite RUclipsrs Jeremy Jahns is constantly wearing things that create this effect. That's cool that you can reduce it a bit. Another great tutorial.
Thanks guys!!
what if you actually want the shirt in focus?
Then you’ll need to shoot with a different camera that has an internal filter, or have the subject wear a different shirt!
@@AlliandWill Of course! Thanks for your cordial "help" :)

This works too! But tends to slightly soften the whole shot which may not be what you’re going for. Pro mists are typically used for beauty shots.

I am currently editing and there are lines, kind of pixilated on their spectacles, glasses. How do I fix that?
That sounds like a complex project, and might require a program like After Effects with some advanced techniques to solve. However, it's also possible that it's too complicated to address and therefore not worth the time.

I think you’re right, that would seem to be harder to remove.
So if you just shoot with a camera that has an OLPF, do you not have this problem?
A camera with that filter will definitely do a great job at dealing with it, and in most cases will work perfectly, but when it doesn’t, you can use this technique 😃
But now the shirt is out of focus. How do you resolve that?
You can’t. It’s literally impossible unless you superimposed another shot over it. The point of this tutorial is to reduce the weird jittery look that comes with moire, so a blurred shirt is the compromise.

It can be very annoying when you see it in the editing room after filming a long interview or something like that haha Thanks!
saved me...thanks
Great! Thanks for sharing this!
You’re welcome!
Does this work the same with aliasing?
It should help; essentially all you’re doing is slightly blurring the area to reduce it

Never had this issue on cam, but always great to know !

Corporate projects tend to have it a lot because everyone is wearing business suits 😆
@@AlliandWill Yes I guess so, but for now my level of skills is far away from corporate projects, so I've never been confronted to this kind of issues lol 😅
Here's another question for you. What else do you tell your clients about what to wear before you shoot? Or what else do you consider?
Great question! Our production company made a PDF guide that we send to clients before shoots; DM us on Instagram and we’ll send it!
@@AlliandWill Thank you that would be very helpful to know what to think about other than equipment, and settings. 😀

Hi Alli & Will, Thank You for this séquence very useful ! Successfully removed the moire on my clip. Best regards
I had no idea what "Moire" even meant until now... Wow.. This is even moveable on premiere? Had no clue!!
Yep! You can track the subject to keep locked on :)
Who knew! Gausian blur. Thanks, solved my problem!
very informative thank you for sharing info
