Thank you so much mate. I kept this set in the loft for about 8 years and just spent the holidays building it with my 6 year old cousin. He was disheartened when it didnt work. Just ripped out the speed controller and rewired it he was so happy. Thanks again mate im leaving for home tomorrow and wouldnt have had time to sit there and fault find otherwise.
from the reading I have done the airfix ICE is a excellent kit, I only grabbed the jet engine because it looks so cool and hey it was fun to blow up, I love watching blade off tests and engines exploding
The 555 chip is usually used as a timing chip - producing a clock tick effectively. Not sure what it would be required for on this model without looking in greater detail at the components and wiring diagram... Quite surprising that the turbine spins the wrong way too!
Excellent work. Age and experience suggests back yard jet engines are dangerous (in my case home brew rocket engine, which exploded), but I would suggest that a refusal to grow up is healthy. In my case, I take such experiments away from the burbs to a mates place where noise (and the occasional explosion) is of no consequence. But of course, stay safe, not reckless.
Pretty AWESOME vid! The Me 262 is a worthy choice for favorite jet (on my short list). My favorite, the SR-71, just nudges it out. So many great innovations went into the Blackbird, necessitated by it's incredible engines and Mach 3.2 cruise speed. Fastest air breather all time, the SR-71 holds decades old records that may take many more decades before they are broken, if ever. From movable aerospike inlets, to the first use of stealth tech, to it being 85% titanium, it is sheer genius.
Brilliant, Leo!! I especially liked the footage at the end of the old jet turbine. Very cool. And you're right about the mini pyro. CGI has all but decimated the industry. I have to look at old episodes of Space 1999 to see some great mini pyro in action. I'm looking forward to the new BluRay TNG releases. They literally went back and re-rendered all the scenes with 1080p CGI fx. The two episodes I saw looked fantastic. Love the jet, Leo. I might have to find one locally for my son.
This video is awesome man,i didn't knew that airfix made a model kit such as that! I learned airfix as a model company when i bought a set of a skeleton years back, that had also inside the box glow in the dark paint! I build it and it was really fun have it on my room! I find it really fascinating with how those jet engines work because i work in a ground handling on airport macedonia in greece! I see those huge machines working like that and trying to imagine how they lift so many pounds from the ground to the freaking air.
my gut feeling is the circuit board in this toy is a bad idea, electronics is not my fav subject so I need the viewers to tell me their thoughts, thanks for your input
I was given one of these to build as a present to help with recovery from illness. Surprise is def the issue (manufacturing maintenance is my trade🙂). Airflow is impeded by any elbows/joins in pipework, so the already underpowered fan doesn't deliver enough air at the impeller of the jet going through the two 90 degree elbows and restricted air outlet. I will try and hardwire and may even carry out your finals tests 🤣🤣
Hey Leo, a quick recommendation for you. Try and watch James Mays Toy Stories, I think you can find them somewhere on the tube. You probably will enjoy it as they do supersized challenges with classic toys.
I think it states the jet was developed at the same time, I don;t think it was ever a joint effort. There is always huge arguments who is the father of the gas turbine engine, and who had the first operational aircraft using the technology. But lets not mention the war unless it's the Borg in Star Trek.
I am yet to see a real Ho229, I have seen a real Me262 in the Air and Space museum in the USA, and once I saw the aircraft for real I was hooked. It just looks so right. The Me262 earned it stripes, i'm not sure what ever happened to the Ho229
The controller is a standard NE555 timer chip. I would say they are using it as a variable Mark/Space pulse generator. It probably has a 80/20 ratio at the fastest setting, which would equate to an average of 5v instead of the full 6v from the batteries. This is also why this chip would be getting hot. At the lower setting there would be less average voltage by having a greater off time to on time.
I checked mine and it is definitely an NE555 timer that powers the motor through Q1. This has a voltage drop and the highest M/S ratio does leave to motor with less power to operate. A small boost circuit would be an advantage here.
i'm worried this sort of video is against the TOS of youtube, Sure tubers like Kipkay can do these sorts of videos, lasers, playing with fire but it may be more trouble than it's worth. Sadly youtube today is not like the classic youtube from 5 yeas ago where almost anything goes
Airfix, One day I'll make one of their kits. Just one thing Leo, invention of the Jet Engine a joint effort between the UK and Germany? oh and nice idea for a Brog cube.
air-fix recently upgraded the model so it runs on AA batteries and rebuilt the circuit board, from all of the complaints about this model the new version should work 100%.
rjkaxxxas - I just bought this kit in Guernsey (Channel Islands) and it is still on the C cells - I think there are probably a few still on the shelves. I agree with Leo on the instructions - rubbish and contradictory on the wiring, colour would help - not the normal Airfix approach - probably written by someone in Korea (no offence). Great video - helped me sort it and loved the pyrotechnics... I used to do a little bit too in my teens - built a rifle out of hardwood with projectiles powered by firework gunpowder worked a treat - local boys thought I was boss. Lucky I didn't get locked up.
I believe that a lego figurine is hard enough to cause some serious damage to a real jet engine,at least one smaller one from a private jet or something!
like a lot of childhood 1970's toy's I had, this thing will continually persevere in not working no matter how much you tinker with it or what the cost or time you spend doing so, brings back memories, even if this is not a '70's toy-they were even bigger steaming piles of crap. It seems anything dealing with "air" is an enigma for toy makers even now in 2014. What a waste of money for a kid or a hobbyist. but that rhymes with lobbyist the true toy makers. it does not sound like a jet engine, it sounds like what you put between the spokes on your bicycle wheel, a piece of plastic milk carton, lol.
Have you heard that an original Junkers engined Me-262 is almost airworthy? Also that turbocharger you used is likely from a light aircraft. Since it said Continental Motors on it, it’s probably from an TSIO-520 from the ‘60s or ‘70s.
Hi there The Airfix Jet Engine looks pretty cool, its just a shame that unless you modify it, it doesn't work very well or not at all. Tis indeed a cool looking jet engine you have there. It is a shame how everyone behaves now-a-days with stuff like this unless you have your own field in the middle of no where ^^; Be nice to try out pyrotechnics one day as it is interesting to do some effects in real life rather than using a computer. Euan
I had the exact same problem with it not turning but after assembling the turbines and everything I found it said it needs a bit of end float so I pulled the turbines apart a little so it was all free to rotate and it worked fine after this
After a second view. I realize its a toy for children, therefor it must be by design it spins in wrong direction. Reason, it deflects all things tossed at the fan which means it will also deflect little fingers from being sucked in & chopped off. That is probably why it doesn't spin at full optimum power as-well. Keep children from injuring themselves.
I just wired a 7.4v lipo into mine. Motor seems to tolerate the power but my turbine is still too tight. I feel like replacing the motor with an actual EDF motor ive got
Yeah some people might like it when you explode stuff but people don't like it when you explode Lego Ninjago toys and that and what are those people is me
Hey Leo can you put some smoke or steam in front of the turbine engines and make sure it spins the right way like in real life and also put some reafing holes in the back so we can see the air coming out the back of the jet engine well actually the smoke, like this comment if you whant to see this happen, thanks leo if you do this and give a shout out to me Nathan DeBerry
Thank you so much mate. I kept this set in the loft for about 8 years and just spent the holidays building it with my 6 year old cousin. He was disheartened when it didnt work. I am really glad that you gave happiness to your small cousing, there is nothing better than a cnild's smile to show you its happiness!
I wonder what happened to that jet engine.
EDIT: Thanks For the heart Leo!
I still have it.
@@leokimvideo wow, after all these years you still have a burnt model jet engine, will it do a cameo in one of your vids?
from the reading I have done the airfix ICE is a excellent kit, I only grabbed the jet engine because it looks so cool

it's history for me as I am in my 20's and that's a very long time ago now
4:29 its a good thing that you covered up duracell. Now nobody can see the word and sue you

Best model building sets ever

Great video, the testing was hilarious.I work for RR and they do these tests as well, yours are far more entertaining
Just another reason not to buy cameras off you second-hand, Leo! Your videos are very interesting to watch! Don't let the n00bs hold you back!

That hail ingestion test cracked me up the most.
Well if you are not allowed to play with bikes, knifes or guns then there aren't many other things for you to do ^_^
I love the hail ingestion.... lolzzz ..
well done, now watch the video
Model kits are so fun... ; )
Thats something I did not know but now I do..!!
The little plastic bits can be and is used to make "greebles", the sticky-outy bits on ships to give them texture.

I REALLY want to put something in the jet engine just to se it explode in peace’s soooooooo satisfying

Sadly youtube today is not like the classic youtube from 5 yeas ago where almost anything goes
since its made by hornby id laugh if it came with a free train
gr8 vid as always
this seems to be a very common complaint, I wonder if Airfix will address the problems
Airfix, One day I'll make one of their kits. Just one thing Leo, invention of the Jet Engine a joint effort between the UK and Germany? oh and nice idea for a Brog cube.
wow love the pyro-work :P Does the same problem occur in the AirFix Internal Combustion Engine? As that is in the same range as this product?
Yes. That is exactly what they used to make the Borg Cube.
A truly Bonkers Video.
I had a Mum Just like yours.
I did just the same things.
Absolutely brilliant ;)
BORG
air-fix recently upgraded the model so it runs on AA batteries and rebuilt the circuit board, from all of the complaints about this model the new version should work 100%.
2:51 Or you could also do some basement pipes with them. It made me think about plumbing.

Interesting video.
great video! 1 question, at high speed does this engine have any thrust?
I believe that a lego figurine is hard enough to cause some serious damage to a real jet engine,at least one smaller one from a private jet or something!

In the explosion part in the test, it reminds me of the Airbus A380 engine explosion test
@leokimvideo Ha, when you put the chicken up to the turbine at 9:13, did you have to pull it out quickly, or let it be digested?
awesome, might just have to develop my own jet!
australian mythbuster leo!
Hi there

Euan
Where can I get a PDF of the instructions, mine were missing!!!
John Smith did you ever find how to build it?
AHPilot2018 not personally, but 5y.o. did
No Real Lego Chickens were harmed in the making of this video. (Not)
JAY IN NINJAGO YAY
Won't tolerate tightness on the shaft? Bow chicka bow wow.
I had the exact same problem with it not turning but after assembling the turbines and everything I found it said it needs a bit of end float so I pulled the turbines apart a little so it was all free to rotate and it worked fine after this
a snake bit him..!!
actually that back funnel doesnt spin in real life though but this toy is great
After a second view. I realize its a toy for children, therefor it must be by design it spins in wrong direction. I had to add a 9 volt battery to get it to work. Still have the throttle control
Also the lights don't light up to bright
I guess Michael Bay is doing the old school! XD
nice where did you get this looks great for engineering
Do a review on the me 262
04:28 The brand-new CENSORED(TM) batteries.
The end was deep.
What plane is it from because the photo on the ground makes it look like a A320 but I doubt it is
good idea
2.16 they are called compressor blades and the rest are called fan blades.
Well Hornby did buy out Airfix in the early 2000s
dose it blow out cool or hot air?
JET JET GO BOOM BOOM YAAAA
How did it turn the right way
yes we do
When the Germans came out with a completely new plane during WWII my great grandfather despite the disadvantages shot it down
The battery box dosnt give out power even though the battery's is it are new
8:21 what is this the Concorde
Cool
can I blow up hero factory stuff..??
its clever how you hide copywrite claims :3
It would seem the magic of jets died with him :(
hi, does this generates any thrust please guys?
As there are plastic "walls" inside the engine the air blows out the front not the back.
THEY SELL THAT AS A TOY FOR 60.00$?!?!?!???! great now i can make my mini plane
History for me I saw that Video like 3 years ago
Yes, yes you can.
It's crazy that with 60dollars you can actually buy a real working 1/6scale chevy engine
SamZarifYT WHAT!?
It would be interesting if it came with reverse thrust
well it would be owned by Hornby as Hornby own airfix
I just wired a 7.4v lipo into mine. Motor seems to tolerate the power but my turbine is still too tight. I feel like replacing the motor with an actual EDF motor ive got
So... Should I get it or not?? Please reply until 2 8 2014
And maybe you shouldn't of left it on for a long time...
If You Have A Few Thousand Dollars To Spend, Then You Can Get A Jet-Cat Jet Engine!
It's Real!
YOU GOT IT FOR $60 I HAD TO GET IT FOR $100
No, Hornby OWNS Airfix Not The Other Way Around.
Yeah some people might like it when you explode stuff but people don't like it when you explode Lego Ninjago toys and that and what are those people is me
Are you the NMADirect guy?
@leokimvideo you made a awesome video.
Hidden secret: The Furze effect lol.
DID HE JJUST PUT JAY FROM LEGO NINJAGO
Out one of ur reback spiders in there.. have it go thru the main fan, in to the intake, into the combustion, and out the turbine
hey I live in Perth where do you live?
xXMrsupremeXx smith Me too...G'day from WA 👍
wy tho you put charges
4:29 is duracell
Wen it is hot the serket then put a cooling fan on it
Hey Leo can you put some smoke or steam in front of the turbine engines and make sure it spins the right way like in real life and also put some reafing holes in the back so we can see the air coming out the back of the jet engine well actually the smoke, like this comment if you whant to see this happen, thanks leo if you do this and give a shout out to me Nathan DeBerry
