  • Let's compare cooking in a Roadpro 12 Volt Stove and a Hot Logic Mini. The Roadpro Stove cooks at 300 degrees while the Hot Logic Mini cooks at 165 degrees. The Roadpro uses 180 watts of DC power while the Hot Logic uses 45 watts of AC power. I'll cook a fried egg in each one and let's see how they come out. These small appliances are great for cooking in small spaces. They are great for RV cooking, van cooking, car cooking, dorm cooking, hotel room cooking, office cooking, etc. They are small, portable, and light weight so they are easy to travel with. They are also excellent prepping gear. Since they use very low wattage, they can be easily run off of a generator or solar power station.

    It would be interesting to see an egg cooked within one of those silicone rings (like McDonald’s). Also, as someone else mentioned, there are silicone egg cups - you could put several in the original pan (no loaf pan) and put a little water in to poach them. ??? Lots of fun to experiment. 😁

    To carolgTX comment: you can use it while you're driving on a flat surface, countertop in camper or floor in semi, i do it all the time no issues. I also use heavy duty aluminum foil in my cooker because it doesn't restrict any space inside like the loaf foil insert does. I plug mine in and cook my dinner while im driving so that when i stop driving several hours later it'll be done cooking. I cook chicken in mine, 2 drums and 2 thighs, takes 1h10m. If you use it indoors you'll need the wall adapter because the roadpro is only a 12vdc plug

    My HLM has a 12v plug because I use it traveling in a vehicle. I think it does a better job of cooking raw veggies like broccoli florets. I’ve reheated a leftover pork chop & cooked a raw chicken thigh (you are talking a minimum cooking time of 1:45 hours minimum to be sure it gets up to safe temperature, I go over 2hr to be sure). And that broccoli 🥦 is completely cooked with the perfect crisp whether 45 min or 3 hours. It’s wonderful to have a hot meal at an interstate rest area along the way or at your destination whether motel or campground. 😎

    I really wanna get the hot logic mini I just had a few questions. Maybe u can help with. Can I cook a steak in a bowl made from tin foil in it? If so is there anyway to get that nice delicious, browning, maillard effect on it? Since there's no buttons or anything. Lastly, once again without buttions, temp control, etc... How will it know when my steak is a nice medium-rare? Without ME checking and temping it over and over?(especially if I'm starting from a frozen piece of meat. Thank u for the video by the way. I really enjoyed it!

    • @CounterCooking
      @CounterCooking  2 года назад +1

      Yes you can cook a steak in a bowl made from tin foil. No, there is no way to brown it because it only reaches 165 degrees which is not hot enough. You would have to brown it before putting it in the Hot Logic to finish cooking it. It works great for low and slow cooking. How long it will cook until it is medium rare depends upon the thickness of the steak and the cut of the meat. You would have to monitor it. It would be trial and error until you learned the timing. Hope that helps.

    When I go the HL website-they have the HL mini that draws 45watts, AND they also have their larger PRO models that draw I think 90watts. So my question is-does the PRO model that draws 90watts cook/warm at a higher temp than the 45 watt version? The 45watt version warms up to 165 degrees. So does the 90 watt version heat to twice as much as the 45 watt versin? Or is this wishful thinking?

    Another way you can cook while living on 12 volts, is with a personal rice cooker, I have a "Perfect Cooker" model that takes 200 watts while it comes up to temperature, then goes down to a lower wattage. I've made dump cakes, and cassaroles, mac & cheese etc in it. I have a small 300 watt sine wave inverter under the passenger seat, that powers the cooker with no trouble. Where it brings food up to temperature and then holds it, it doesn't need any fussing while you are driving.

      Yes. If you use it while driving it does not affect your battery. An inverter is necessary if you want to convert 9v to AC power. This appliance is 9v so it plugs into a cigarette lighter. Make sure it’s on a stable surface because when tilted, it can leak.

    Thanks for this informative video! A couple of points. 1) the Road Pro should not be used while you are driving because it has a higher center of gravity. It could very easily tip over when a vehicle is in motion. 2) When you sprayed the pan with the cooking spray, it didn't cover the entire bottom of the glass dish. That is why the Hot Logic egg stuck a bit more. All in all, this was a great side by side compare and contast, and I agree with you - the Hot Logic is much mire versatile.

    I've had both hotlogic and roadpro. Roadpro will blow a fuse in your car. Most 12 volt outlets are 120 watt and roadpro is 144. I used it about a month before my 12 volt stopped working and the roadpro cord gets hot. Just read Amazon reviews of the roadpro or anything similar. It ruins your 12 volt outlet or it melts. I even seen one picture where the metal pan warped. Hotlogic if you plan ahead and thawl out your frozen dinners it can heat pretty quickly and your food won't burn

    • @CounterCooking
      @CounterCooking  2 года назад +2

      Roadpro is actually higher than 144 watts. I’ve emailed the company about this. I specifically bought a 12v 12a (144 watts) power station to use with my Roadpro and it would not work. They reason why is because when you first plug it in, it surges to around 180. Within a few minutes, the power it draws settles down to around 100 watts. I’ve tested this with a wattage meter. It then cooks at around 100 watts.

      You are exactly right. Im just so surprised that nobdy-until you , actually made this very astute observation. All these idiots using the RP in their cars cig lighter that say 12V 120MAX will blow up their cig lighter or fuse. The RP actually needs up to 188 watts for it to work. So in my 2014 Honda Pilot the RP wont work because my cig lighter says 12V 120max. This is why Im going to buy the HL, because it only draws 45watts.

      I had two of my sockets in my older truck go out. I went and got a heavy duty truck multi port socket (pretty cheap) and had it wired to my battery directly (you can also do it to the fuse box which doesn't require drilling). I had someone do this for $40 and I have 3 more sockets that can run all kinds of things no problem in my new truck. It's great for running my dashcam and other things as well and it has the "always on" function that many newer vehicles don't have accessible by default. It's an easy solution in case anyone is interested.
      I like both of them as one heats much faster, and the other keeps the food warm and fits in smaller areas. The RoadPro can cook a large variety of foods and has good capacity as well.

    Hot Logic Mini for the win. My oldest one is 4 years old and still going, and still being used a few times a week. It's been in many countries, used in countless hotel rooms, cars, and even in airplanes. I liked it so much that I bought the 9x13 and also bought the 4-bay commercial one when I found it deeply discounted one time.
    We've cooked multiple, proper Thanksgiving Dinners in regular hotel rooms using 2x Hot Logic minis and the 9x13. I did discover that they don't work all that well if directly in the airflow of a hotel AC, but tossing a bath towel over them fixes that when the hotel desk is right in front of the wall AC.

    Something people gotta be aware of, for eggs you'd want the egg whites to cook sooner before the yolk, so that you have a solid egg white to a soft/runny yolk.
    Due to the nature of a set temperature and how large the volume of the heated area is making contact with the surface, the yolk ends up cooking a bit too fast which ends up being equal to the egg white.
    Using smaller individual containers, to store the egg itself and keeping it away from direct contact surfaces, could help, or even submerging the entire egg in a sealed container of water (with air gaps of course), you could 'sous vide' the egg.
    The Roadpro essentially gets hotter, which helps cook egg whites quicker and possibly be able to get you runny eggs, but if you truly want to keep it for longer, you'd lose that advantage of runny eggs.
    You could do lifehacks by using a 'timer' which turns on and off the roadpro, and customize it so it cooks something, but turns off after a fixed time and may repeatingly turn on and off on a schedule to maintain heat (maybe using a remote thermometer can help program it), but otherwise for these old types of appliances, making them 'smarter' would make them more relevant to today's usage.
