This song was actually written about the lead singer's depression issues but then when he realized people could construe it was about runaways he went in full on it and thought of the good that could come from highlighting the homeless and missing kids in the country. As someone else mentioned, countries across the world were allowed to change the faces in the video to their own missing children. It was really cool. A lot of kids were actually saved/ or if they were true runaways they saw the video and at least contacted their families. Great reaction. I agree there are a lot of songs I heard "back in the day" and either didn't appreciate or just didn't understand the meaning behind them. Time certainly does help that.
My dad was abandoned from his mom (who was a prostitute) at 4 when his baby sister was 1. He went from foster care to foster care. Every time I hear or see this video I think of him and his childhood and it makes me cry. Every time
I didn’t know about what this was really about until recently. I was overseas at that time, 92-93. I listened to a woman who was a run away at this time. She hitched a ride with a guy who turned out to be a serial rapier/killer that she escaped from
It was my mother’s biggest fear, to have her child missing. She would rather have visited her child’s grave then to have her missing. She always said that at least then she would have some closure and a place to mourn and remember. Today I am a mother, and I finally understand it now
Watching your face as you figured out what this was about was sobering, in the best possible way. Remember it bit take hearts, the entire rest of that album (Grave Dancers Union) is full of esgy rock and roll, humor, anger, and more. One of mu favorite albums, start to finish, of that era. MTV was at or near its peak at the time. I owned a music store selling CDs. This song and the entire album were immensly popular. Thank you, Stan.
There is a video of the outcomes of the missing kids in this video. There is also a remake of the song, featuring a new batch of missing kids. Both worth a check out.
