This game has some of the best parallax effects i've ever seen in a 2d game! Just check out that tower below the level two boss! That and this game just looks absolutely gorgeous, all those hand drawn sprites are so crisp and sexy.
+KitFireburn Yeah, it's really impressive how much detail is packed into the sprites. Looks like it could be distracting during gameplay, as there is not a strong divide in saturation or value. between foreground and background, but it looks really cool.
Not distracting at all, really. At least as long as you don't count marvelling at the beautiful handdrawn pixelart as distraction. My favourites are the window reflections in stage 2 (trains, and even some enemies), of course Tokyo Tower, and the explosion of the building right before the 2nd boss is excellent as well. Also the enemies and bosses are extraordinarily well animated, with all the bullets coming out of tiny turrets that open/close, complete with light effect etc. Brilliant!
Yes.... this kinda blowed my socks off. Looks amazing :3 Also those wondering requires "Cave MK 1 hardware" also known as cave first generation hardware. This runs on MAME.
Im collecting and playing shmups since over 25 years.... The launch of the spaceshuttle is so unique and till today i dont know any other shmup with that kind of great scenery
In the game Air Gallet more of enemies is based of real models of combat airplanes of the 80 and 90s, (Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, Northop B2 Spirit, Sukhoi SU-27 Flanker, AV8 Harrier, Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II, Dassault Rafale, Boeing E3 Sentry AWACS, North American Rockwell B1B Lancer and others) , and the first Boss is a Parody of Space Shuttle of NASA and Soviet Shuttle Buran 5:07, the airplane of the player is a parody of the Boeing Lockheed F-22 Raptor
The graphic designer for this game seems to have a hard on for Shoji Kawamori's designs from Patlabor. That Eagle and the attack helicopter are almost direct copies
The devs that created this game were ex-Toaplan. The team actually didn't like this end result. I recall they felt rushed to get Air Gallet out and it's the only shooter they made then everyone once again broke off and mainly joined Cave which they were just getting started during this time. Donpachi was already done, and Dodonpachi was in the oven. The time frame would make since this came out in 96..
close enough to a bullet hell. I might be actually able to beat this LOL This game soundtrack is awesome. the parallax effects! This game uses a 2 diffent CPUs, an 68000 & a Z80. It a shame, this might of been able to be ported to a Sharp X68k or a PowerPC. Hell those chips were state of the art in 1979!
I think this was the only game made by Gazelle! Anyway, here are the stages: 2:50 Stage 1 5:30 Stage 2 8:41 Stage 3 12:47 Stage 4 16:54 Stage 5 20:35 Final Stage 26:17 Ending
Actually, Raiden is a Twin Cobra clone. Air Gallet was made by former members of Toaplan, the company that developed Twin Cobra. I think Raiden's the best game of the bunch, but it's no doubt Toaplan originated this style of shmup.
"Why am I being reminded of Toaplan shooters?" Gazelle, the developer of this game, was made up of former Toaplan employees. There seriously needs to be a Toaplan compilation released someday... and the Gazelle games should be included!
I feel sorry for anyone who had to work in the change booth of any arcade that had this. You'd be hearing that woman say "Air Garret blows your socks off" and "presented by Banpresto" in bed at night as you close your eyes to sleep. We know who presented it, we can read.
I really liked this longplay, this game was pretty well done, but I have to say the final boss was not good. A giant of metal with bald "humans" being tormented by some kind of Valkyrie and then the head detaching and fighting us. The deterioration in the fight was good, but it ruins the atmosphere built throught the game that the enemy is humans terrorists. Even if they wanted to make it was aliens we don't need a genius to say a alien ship emerging from the enemy last stronghold or shedding a earthling machine facade would have been better, the giant statue was them trying too hard. I've read that this game had problems with the budget and was a bit rushed to the end, that could be why it came out liek that, even if normally the last boss should be the best of the whole game. The game director wasn't happy with the result when he looked back some time later. The scene with the allied aircraft kamikazing the pre-boss was great, the only fix it needed was the boss changing orientaion after getting hit off center and then a explosion on the moment of the impact itself.
Interestingly enough, the first boss is a *Russian* space shuttle design. I always thought the game's backstory (not that we're ever likely to find it) involved a new Russo-Japanese war, with the war having been manipulated into effect by a doomsday cult trying to kickstart WW3.
2:46 lol when the 2P jet leaves you behind like "Oops! Only 1 player game? Sorry, bro! You are on your own!"

KitFireburn Then you should play Space Megaforce some time. Strap the hell in when you do.
Trivia: Most of the sprites were drawn over pre-rendered graphics for reference.
A lot of those effects weren't actually possible. They had to use quantum coding techniques to get them in the game

This game needs to be released either on Arcade Archives or part of M2 Shot Triggers.
You know he’s a good pilot because he’s wearing a headband. Good pilots wear headbands.

The bit at the beginning where the jets launch from the aircraft carrier is fucking cool! 😲😀🧦🦶🦶
Hah-hah! I was not wearing any s- AAARGH, MY FEET!!!
OH NO MY SOCKS BLEW OFF
This game blew my Socks off! :D
me it was donpachi & doDonpachi & Blade Soldier & Gate of thunder (oohh my god!)
I read that as the voice proclaims that AirGallet blows your socks off!
This game feels like a mix of Raiden and Dodonpachi.
I love the parallax sprite scaling in this game.
I like how the planes are just modded up version of the f-15 eagle and the f-18 hornet
The 1st' level intro looks awesome today... imagine this at the '96.
This game may have blown no one's socks off, but the music sure did!
BUT I'M NOT WEARIN........
(feet gets blown up)
OH GOD NO, MY FEET

Min 2:00 inspired in the original model North American Rockwell B1B Lancer strategic nuclear bomber
7:38 This is incredible... Its the same BUILDING AT THE END OF 1ST MISSION OF AERO FIGHTERS 3!!!
I think that's the National Diet Building in Chiyoda.
This game is difficult. It took me 15 credits to finish it. I usually finish these games with 9.
It was 15 credits per stage for me. It's big time quarter muncher.
The laser power up sounds like phasers from Star Trek.
*At **2:05** there's more 9/11 twin tower predictive programming*
Kind of difficult, since this is apparently about a new Russo-Japanese War.
And they stolen American technology and aircraft design
Great sound track, amazing graphics, solid game play but this game is HARD. I can only play with cheats on if I want to actually enjoy it.

And then the final phase of the final boss hits.
One of the best SHMUP yet after this game's release the developer was in bankrupt
...Air Garret?

U sure??? :/
+Luke Farebrother Wait, they did make one other game: a licensed game for Sailor Moon. But you know what licensed games are like...
that one is a ok beat em up other then a port of batsugun for sega saturn that was it
They also did Toaplan Shooting Battle on PS1 (Twin Cobra, Kyukyoku Tiger, Tiger Heli) & some Sailor Moon quiz game.
Looks like a pretty good Raiden clone.

This game is insanity, even for me who loves challenging games. Still beat it though using a lot of credits XD
Lady, don't talk about my socks - you don't know me.
A inspiration from Sky Target (1995) SEGA & 19XX : The War Against Destiny (1995, 1996)(Capcom)
Well done.
The final boss is the strangest boss ever
Alien bio-mechanical lifeform.
I’m pretty sure the true villain is not the Russian military, but a doomsday cult manipulating them.
To date, no one has ever beaten this game with their socks still on.
Must have been hard to work in an arcade while the attract mode was going on and sleep at night...
Im pretty sure you can turn oiff sound on the attract mode

Interesting that this game has voice lines.
A great "Toaplan" shoot-em-up
More like Eighting/Raizing.
@@luisreyes1963 More like Seibu Kaihatsu
This game is HARD!
God these graphics... love them so much. T__T
Ha! The final boss is the goddess tower statue from Final Fantasy 6!
"I'm gonna take a nice hot shower" HAHAHA
Man, I hated coin-ops that talked during the "insert coins" demo loop.

wait....I had socks when I started my game.
Why don't you use your special attacks ? I noticed that, in every vertical shooter you just use the regular weapons.
How incredibly underwhelming for '96!
As an aside, I detect some sounds lifted from Gallaga

Too bad the company behind this masterpiece went bankrupt.

But i kinda wanna see a romhack where this game plays with ESP-RADE musics xD
