That 1969 Washington team under Vince Lombardi had three gay players (an NFL record as far as I know) and Lombardi wouldn't allow them to be harassed, abused or discriminated against in any way because of it. Hell of a guy.

Mercein played an even bigger role in the Ice Bowl, bringing the ball from the Dallas 30 to the 3 with a 19 yard reception and a 8 yard run on successive plays on the deciding drive. If he doesn't bump into Forrest Gregg on that run, he may have scored the go ahead TD instead of the famous Starr sneak and even then, threw up his hands as he plunged forward to show he wasn't assisting Starr (the play was 31 wedge but Starr decided to sneak it in due to the ice, prompting the famous "run it and let's get the hell out of here" quote from Lombardi).

    1. 10 championship games in 10 years, that's something.
    2. In Browns lore, the QB's in my opinion who are a very distant 2nd and 3rd behind Otto are Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar.
    3. Ah yes, the Lolcow era of the Redskins (46-70) where they cycled through several coaches and starting QB's; though not to the degree of the Snyder years.
And no playoffs and just two years with winning records (1955 and 1969).
    4. Getting worse every coaching year, that happened with Rich Kotite during his Eagles and Jets run and when Chuck Knox returned to the Rams 92-94.

Some of the footage near the beginning of the video is from the 1951 NFL Championship game vs. the Rams, which was televised on the DuMont network, and was the first championship game to be televised live from coast to coast.
David Maraniss makes brief mention of the Mercein episode in his biography of Lombardi, "When Pride Still Mattered" (1999).
By the way, our host seems to have a politically correct phobia about mentioning the Washington team's name (and it's not a word automatically censored by RUclips); the name was "Redskins."

Fascinating to learn of a Hall of Fame QB who was worse than Norm Van Brocklin. At least Bart Starr wasn't hated by his players going 52-75-1.

One stat I often bring up about Otto Graham is that two quarterbacks in pro football history made it to their league championship game 10 times and won seven of them. But only one of them never failed to make it to the championship game.
But yeah, he was a terrible coach. And if he wanted Mercein that badly, and he really did speak with Lombardi, he should have been smart enough to immediately promote him and get him under contract after Vince called. And he should have been up on the rules enough to know that you don't control the rights of a taxi squad player!

While it is dumb that Otto Graham didn’t know the rule, you have missed the point and so did and does the NFL. A player on a teams practice squad is paid by said team, which means he is under contract. That’s why it’s the rule that’s bad. No team should be allowed to do this not then not now. At least without compensation to the team the player is being taken from. And yes a system like that can work. Baseball does it. Although they call it MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

Kinda torn on this issue....I grew up in DC during the Gibbs Hogs glory years. Great memories of watching my hometown team & having bragging rights in college for those super bowl wins. However if the team was called the Darkies or the Inkspots or something else like that, I would have a different view of it all. Yes there are native Americans that embraced the team but there were many native Americans that didn't and were offended (understandably so). Makes absolute sense to change the name to something not offensive to a group of people....
