The most basic problem was that the kingdoms in Indonesia at that time cooperated with the Dutch to make profits without thinking about the fate of their people. If the kingdoms did not cooperate, of course the Dutch would not easily dominate the archipelago. That is why the kings, regents and officials at that time were employees of the Dutch kingdom. Indeed, the kingdoms in the archipelago were under the domination of western nations but not with their people. There have been rebellions everywhere led by various people who were later raised as heroes.
divide et impera. It's an old game. The romans played it, the spanish in South America, the British in India, the Dutch in Indonesia, and the Americans and Sovjets in Afghanistan. Nothing new under the sun.
@@martijnb5887 agree, the kings has force to coordinate together. For their ppl and their fate, ofc they will accept it. Netherlands use rivalry along the kingdoms including political opposition to get more influence and strengthen the position. The key is communication along the kingdoms, there's no person have enough caliber to unite the kingdoms to fight Netherlands.

The reason why the Dutch easily conquered the Southeast Asian kingdom was because the impact of mini World War in the Indian Ocean called "War of the League of Indies" prior to the Dutch arrival into the region. Its basically a War between Islamic Nation along the Indian Ocean as well as Ottoman Empire vs Spanish Empire as well as Portuguese. The war was so big, it made some indonesian sultanates became exhausted due to war financing etc. The war claimed many resources throughout Islamic World. League Of Indies : - Sultanate of Bijapur - Sultanate of Ahmadnagar - Sultanate of Aceh - Sultanate of Bantam (Banten) - Sultanate of Kalinyamat (Demak) - Sultanate of Ternate - Sultanate of Tidore - Zamorin of Calicut - Sultanate of Golkonda - Ottoman Empire Vs Spanish Empire and its Allies: - Portugal - Sultanate of Johor - Sunda Pajajaran Kingdom Ps: This war resulted the Fall of Malacca, Portuguese Annexation of Calicut as well as Goa, Weakened the Sultanate of Banten and Tidore due to war, Rise of Johor Riau Empire, Civil war in Java, Mughal Invasion of Southern Indian Muslim Sultanates, Lost of Portuguese influence in the Western part of Java and Sumatra, Christianization of Islands of Lesser Sunda and Southern Moluccas, Islamization of Former Hindu Sunda Pajajaran Kingdom in West Java as well as the lost of Ottoman influence in the region. Apparently there is a saying in Bahasa: Bagai Belanda minta tanah. Direct translate: Like the Dutch asking for lands. The metaphor is that when you give someone little they want more, when you gave more they want everything.
Never heard of that saying before (I learned bahasa Indonesia for years). However, there is another saying with similar meaning: Diberi hati minta jantung (Literally: asking for heart when being given liver)
@@sr3821 Nah, Malacca was controlled by the Dutch before it was being swapped with Bencoolen(Bengkulu) thus the Brits started controlling the Straits Settlements then slowly into Malaya. Plus the Malays are people from Johor, some parts of Sumatra and Riau Islands. So the sayings spawned out from there. I am technically also not Malay as my ancestors were from Java.
A well-made video. Do notice that it wasn't the Dutch Republic that ruled all Indonesians. Most of what is now Indonesia came under Dutch control after the colonial wars the Dutch fought over the course of the 19th century.
Indeed, in fact the United East India Company largely only controlled Java, Southern Sumatra and some islands in the East. Most of its "territory" were vassal states that still managed day to day operations.
Exactly. By the time Indonesia became a dutch colony, the Netherlands were not a republic anymore. Some parts, like southern Bali, only became Dutch colonies in the early 20th century.
@a b It's mainly because the British had many more colonies compare to Dutch. Many of these countries where develop during colonial period and thanks massive British colonial empire their economy can be expanded. Every countries have its own role. Singapore is the good example. British develop Singapore from small fishing village to International trading hub, because the need to transport products from China. Modern Singapore just continue the tradition. Same goes to Malaya. The massive primary resources exporter. Tin and Rubber. Now the palm oil and petroleum. But also thanks to British colonialism, every ex colonies have a very good relationship with each other. Becoming the preferential economic partners. Compare to Dutch, they only have Indonesia. The only source of labour, resources and economy. When they rebel, Indonesia were on their own.
The story in missing an important thing. The Portugese were bringing the spices to Europe from around the world and the Dutch were redistributing the spices to the rest of Europe. After the personal union of Spain and Portugal, Spain did not allow the Dutch to buy spices in Portugal. So they started to get the spices themselves. As many Dutch captains had worked for the Portugese it wasnt hard to find the lucrative Portugese colonies.
the important thing is the dutch being colonized indonesia for almost 3 century and until 2020 we still pay for our freedom to dutch goverment because i dunno the dutch think this land is their..while their gathering spices and fortune from this land make our own people a slave in our own land NAD WE NEVER FORGET..rhe way you eat today and ALL THE DUTCH GLOMORIUS JEWEL KINGDOM IS OUR ANCESTOR BLOOD..we never forget for the blood ..never
@@nurulyunifar8912 "because i dunno" Well at least you're honest on this one... "until 2020 we still pay for our freedom to dutch goverment because i dunno the dutch think this land is their.." Yeah, I'm not sure if you know what you're talking about. No, the average Dutchperson today doesn't think any part of Indonesia is still theirs. "while their gathering spices and fortune from this land make our own people a slave in our own land" This was, like, a few decades ago. @@bismajoyosumarto1237 Actually, a lot of what's said here is true. It's not very well documented, but it is very prevalent in the way our people are still treated; both in Indonesia itself and the ones living in the Netherlands. @@DitisEmile Hello, thank you for your response. I wonder, who is this "our" you speak of? Indonesia's? Out of curiosity, I checked out your channel to find out that you are from the Netherlands. Quite interesting that it's not well-documented. Thanks!
Both on my fathers side and my mothers side my family is connected to the Dutch East Indies. A great-grandfather from mothers side served in the Dutch colonial army before and during World War 2. My Fathers family was originally German but had moved to the Dutch East Indies centuries ago. They had mixed with the Indonesian population. However my great grandfather and his family were kicked out after Independence. To me his son, my grandfather, looks Indonesian but i guess they weren't Indonesian enough. Probably didn't help they were catholic and had kept their German surname. Although i am somewhat sad technically the nation or institution that my family was so connected to doesn't exist any more, we are prabably better of. Now we are just Dutch people again, and my looks are Dutch enough only people with Indonesian roots themselves can still spot the difference.
No doubt your great grandpa kicked out, because anti dutch and anti west sentiment were high back then. It shouldn't have happened. But if you want to have Indonesian nationality today, nobody here will object to it.
In between the Indonesian declaration of independence in 1945 and Dutch recognition of that independence in 1949, a bloody colonial war was fought, the biggest untill the Vietnam War but with much less aircraft.
I'm a tad dissappointed that its very rare to find anyone shedding light on just how bad the lives of the colonized Indonesians under the Dutch were in many Indonesian history videos.... I was kinda hoping this would but oh well.... great job as always though, very thorough.👍
Funny how anglos paint Iberians as bad colonizers and how they paint Iberians as genocidal, when anglos either killed, treated natives as sh*t or as slaves all the time. Funny eh, how history is shaped by the ones who are richer.
@@castronator29 not that this isn't true about the Anglos, but you know the Dutch are not Anglos, right? Also all colonisers were bad colonisers. There is no such thing as a good coloniser.
Thanks for the video!!! just want to give some corrections to the spellings (& pronounciations) of Indonesian locations (in Indonesian) though : 3:58 Bantam is really old so most Indonesians probably don't even know what Bantam is nowadays it's called banten and it refers to west-most province in the island of Java 4:30 actually my first time hearing that name, we just call it the Ambon Island though 6:40 I know it's spelled Aceh but Indonesian pronounce C as 'Ch' instead of a 'K' like english does so it's pronounced 'Acheh' if you are an english native 6:42 this isn't about spelling but you put Makassar wayyyyyy up north mate, it's at the southern tip of the celebes island And some other wrong pronounciations that I'm too lazy to point out and make corrections, but anyway this is a really informative video! thank you very much!

Technically speaking the Dutch RE-created (re-established though unintentionally) Indonesia. At the time of their arrival "Indonesia" was a battleground between various muslim sultanates and hindu kingdoms in Bali, fighting for the legacy of at the time desintegrated Java-based hindu-buddhist Majapahit Empire that ruled almost all of the archipelago in 13th to 16th century.
A lot of the spices Indonesian cuisine uses are originally from South America and brought to Asia by the Europeans. Spices grow in the tropics. There are many other ways to get stronger tastes.
This said, we Dutch still have ties to Indonesia to this day, of course. From words, to food and maybe even more. And it's not just that we eat satay overhere, but I know bitterballen are sold in Indonesia as well. So there you go. Indonesia and Netherlands share a bond which I'm proud of.

I would say the Dutch is able to colonize Indonesia because it is able to gain a foothold in Java. The island of Java at the time and is still today is the population center and rice supplier in the region, so the Dutch were able to secure manpower and political influence over the region. The javanese sultanate of Mataram is also the biggest local power that are able to threaten the Dutch. During its height, Mataram are able to siege Batavia twice. The Mataram Sultanate is also the most technological advanced around the area. Even during the Mataram intervention in late 17th century, the technological difference between the Dutch and the Mataram is not much. The Dutch ability to control Indonesia is also tied to its ability to control Java, as shown by Java war of 1825 where the rebellion is so costly that the dutch implemented reform to ensure the colonies still profitable, and Indonesian national revolution, which mainly happen in Java and Sumatra, and the Majority of Indonesian guillera militia is from the island of java. The moment the dutch unable to assert control in the island of Java, is the moment they lost control of Indonesia

The act that shook the heart of local kingdoms who planned to oppose the Dutch was Jan Pieterzoon Coen' massacre of the entire population of Banda. It was so brutal that most kingdoms in the archipelago dared not raise their voice to protest Dutch unfair prices. The took over of Batavia was made easy because of it. It was chosen for VOC capital because it was a striking distance from Malacca.
@@oranjeboven6363 It was not a war when women and children were wiped out, only left a few dozen man out of an island of several tens of thousand people. That's a genocide level not even Hitler managed to achieve. History were never a fairy tale, but what Coen did was a record low.

Great video, @Knowledgia !! Just a few clarifications in terms of pronunciation of Indonesian settlements: at 6:40 you mispronounced Aceh (it's not "Ackeh", but rather "Acheh" - CH as "chair"). Also the stressed syllable in Makassar is in the middle (2nd syllable), and not on the ending (3rd syllable). Other than that the video is great! Keep up the good work!!
Also, at 6:46 the British flag that's supposed to indicate Makassar is waaay off. You guys have the flag pinned in the north part of the Sulawesi island, but Makassar is located down south, in the southernmost part of Sulawesi.

@@jme7298 Absolutely not, the identity of walloons and flemings keeps getting simplified as "uuh it's just confused french and dutch people" by people completely unaware of belgian history.. :p Just a century ago the majority of the walloon working class didn't even speak french, but walloon (a related langue d'oïl for sure, but an entirely separate language notwithstanding) which is now critically endangered, whereas french was spoken by the ruling/upper classes not just in wallonia, but in flanders as well (though it was certainly more prevalent in wallonia due to the closeness of the language). This is not a case of french people just finding themselves in belgium, but more similar to Ireland, where people had their own language, but the language of the ruling classes then progressively popularized itself through the rest of society, until we get to today's situation, where only older folks speak walloon. Flemish, on the other hand, used to be a lot more different to standard dutch than it is today, but the two dialects/languages (not getting into which it is) have gradually converged over the past two century, while other flemish/brabantian/limburgish dialects have started dissapearing
Because in the past the Indonesians were not united. They still consisted of royal kingdoms and when the Dutch attacked one they did not help each other. And the Dutch did not control Indonesia at once but slowly, one by one the kingdom was conquered
I’m glad you made this video! It’s crazy how a small country like the Netherlands could conquer a large portion of the archipelago that eventually became Indonesia. because simply, the island of Lombok is bigger than Bali, and if you make a map smaller it will prioritize Lombok because of its size, but the islands of Bali and Lombok are the same unit only separated by a small strait.
At 9:30 the location of 'Johor' on the map was incorrectly shown, occupying the approximate location of Melaka. The correct location of Johor is at the southernmost tip of the Malayan peninsula. Of course, that sultanate referred to was actually that of the Riau-Lingga Johor area, so the islands just south could be shaded as well. 😉
The Dutch returned to the former Dutch East Indies territory by piggybacking their British and Australian allies in order to regain control of their former colonies

Interesting video. One little tidbit for the end: Dutch colonial rule in the archipelago actually lasted after 1949 in the form of Dutch New Guinea. It was eventually ceded to Indonesia in 1962.
I am also a product of this history. My grandmother was Portuguese descendant. My grandfather was Spanish descendant. And two of my great grandpas were Dutch soldiers in East Indies. They were all in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. We are called the Borgos, a term for the European descendants.
Indonesia was first colonised by the Portuguese not Dutch. The Dutch took over from the Portuguese. Batavia was the capital of Dutch East India, now known as Jakarta.
It was a trade war that demonstrated extraordinary Dutch conquest, organization and tenacity. Even arriving late in these islands on the other side of the world, they defeated the three greatest powers that exploited local trade: Spain, Portugal and Great Britain. They subdued diverse native populations and even after the bankruptcy and dissolution of the VOC in 1799, they continued to dominate the current Indonesia only granting its independence in 1949!

Although at the time the portuguese were a part of Castille, portuguese colonial holdings were administred by the portuguese or Estado de Índia so its sort of incorrect calling it spanish when it wasnt. Good vid nonetheless
Exactly. They never ruled, owned or colonised anything in Asia apart from the Philippines. Spain was never the dominant power in Africa or Asia. Never. An inconvenient truth that the Spanish just simply can't accept. When they tried during the rule of Philip IV, the Portuguese repelled the Spanish. "A lie repeated 1000 times becomes the truth". Spain never had true power in Asia (and Africa). They conquered the Philippines, but that was it. During King Philip II's reign he was bankrupt 5 times. The true power there was always Portugal, and when Portugal's power crumbled there, it was the Dutch, never the Spanish, that took over. And after the English. But these American videos are fed Spanish propaganda and not real history, so what do you expect?
@@Omerath9 well i dont think its spanish propaganda. I think when looking at colonial history, in its different stages, its more easy to fit politics and history being part of empire building, and not smaller players like Portugal. Which was an empire sure, but not one comparable to the british or the mughal. Til the end of the VOC the dutch republic had little saying in the companies policies. VOC operated independently and had its own ideas and goals, which changed as voc leaders changed too. However it is easy to say the Dutch this the Dutch that, instead of saying the Voc pursued this or waged war, or signed treaties that had 2 different versions. The problem with short summary videos is that they tend to overlook the actors of history and gives rise to the BigHistory interpretation. As if the Dutch werent waging their own wars of independece and against the brits as *the VOC was operating in the Indic. For last i'll say that the Dutch didnt wage war on Portugal because of their union with the castillian crown, but because the portuguese had the strategic points and were very weak. It was an easy target. Ultimately portugal won the atlantic war but lost the asian one
@@pinhass97 Mate, the Portuguese empire was the first global empire in History, and the wealthiest and most prestigious empire in the world from 1480 - 1578. It was the empire everyone in Europe wanted to replicate, not the Spanish empire, which was primarily an American empire built in a more classical, medieval form, highly dependent on natural resources found deep inland, unlike the Portuguese empire which was based on a strategic control of the maritime trade between South America, Africa, the Middle East, India and China, and was considered the true Renaissance empire of the world. Portugal at its peak had colonies in 53 countries, Spain, despite being bigger in territory, only had colonies in 28. Even the Spanish Kings admitted so, and King Charles I tried desperately to increase his power where Portugal was the key player. "If I was King of Lisbon, I would be King of the world", he said. And this was coming from the King of Europe with the mightiest army at one point. Portugal also had a more powerful navy for a long time. Calling Portugal a "smaller player", when in many ways Portugal was the BIGGEST player up til the Iberian Union, is reflective of the kind of ignorance that these videos have of Portuguese history. Spain never had an empire in Asia apart from the Philippines, and to call the Portuguese empire in Asia as the "Spanish empire", is reflective of this deep lack of understanding, as it never was. Spain never took control of Portugal's empire. They couldn't even if they tried, as they got bankrupt endless times. The reason why Portugal got weaker was due to King Sebastian's demise in Alcácer Quibir. Portugal lost its King, army and nobility overnight, and during the Iberian Union lost its ability to keep sending anual armadas of 15 - 20 ships, as it did during the reign of King Manuel I for instance. That's why Portugal's colonies in the far east became weaker. Also, Portugal did not become part of Castille. The Spanish always exaggerate their power during the Iberian Union. They became the most powerful military in Europe for a brief period of time, sure, but in mainland Africa and Asia they were practically non-existent, unlike Portugal who controlled at one point most of the seas between Morocco to Japan, and continued to do so until the Dutch and the English replaced them there. It was only when King Philip IV tried to annex Portugal's now crumbling Asian empire that Portugal risked losing its imperial independence which led to the revolt of the nobles. The deal with Philip II was that Portugal would have a Union of crowns with Spain in the CONDITION that it would continue to rule its own empire. A condition which its successors wanted to change. This fact is ALWAYS ignored. That's why the revolt broke out, which led to a 28 year long war which the Portuguese were able to defeat the Spanish, and get back control of their colonies in Brazil and Angola from the Dutch.
@@Omerath9 having more colonies in more countries doesnt make you the biggest. Portugal had ton of problems in Estado de India. The crown didnt pay soldiers which lead to desertions, and didnt even had sound military tactics. Up until 1800s the portuguese military tactics in Asia was a shock attack cause " it would scare the infidel". It had no manpower, had a chast system where u were either a casado to be well. It did not support mixing, altough it happened a lot due to the lack of control the empire didnt have. And Portugal was a small player in the asian trade. You had big, more powerful empires than the portuguese. Although some victories were achieved you only prospered during the regional conflicts of india, Japan and the north south china divide. There is no need to embelish portuguese history, a lot was sheer luck. It just came a time the portuguse were there longer than all other european
@@pinhass97 Wow, talk about completely defaming History! Portugal was a small player in the Asian trade, hahaha, it was Portugal that laid the foundations for global commerce! Portugal during the reign of King Manuel I probably had the most powerful navy in the world, and outnumbered in many wars managed to achieve the impossible. Have you ever heard of Afonso de Albuquerque and how he managed to conquer the Indian Ocean and most of its important outposts? Have you ever heard of the war of the league of the Indies? No navy in Asia could match the Portuguese for 100 years, and even in Europe, only the Spanish navy could just barely match it, no-one else. You seriously undermine the power that Portugal had in the 16th century. Portugal was the most powerful naval and commercial empire in the world at one point, let alone in Asia, with some of the most skillful warriors and commanders. I suggest you read more. You seem to be describing Portugal of the 1800's, not the 1500's.

Ahem. Malacca is the first place to be colonize and had changed hand multiple times.

Hello, thank you for your response. I wonder, who is this "our" you speak of? Indonesia's? Out of curiosity, I checked out your channel to find out that you are from the Netherlands. Do you happen to personally know anyone in the Netherlands who specifically sees Indonesia that way? To what extent, and how far do they think so? If you don't mind, I'd like to know more about this.
In between the Indonesian declaration of independence in 1945 and Dutch recognition of that independence in 1949, a bloody colonial war was fought, the biggest untill the Vietnam War but with much less aircraft.

They don't know anything about human civilization before 74,000 years ago the massive eruption of supervolcano Toba on Sumatra shaped today world's largest crater lake on earth. Toba is bigger than Yellowstone USA.

3:09 Is nobody talk about how he said the island of Bali, but it was pointed at Lombok Island?
because simply, the island of Lombok is bigger than Bali, and if you make a map smaller it will prioritize Lombok because of its size, but the islands of Bali and Lombok are the same unit only separated by a small strait.

Adding up the Y haplogroup R to 30 percents of Indonesian population also debts of East Netherlands ( Dutch East Indies government, now Indonesia, Since Republic Indonesia is literally a continuation of Dutch East Indies ) 130 billions US dollars. Indonesia literally paid it until 2004. Many people in the Netherlands thought it greedy of the Netherlands to ask for money after what they had done. This was not related to that damage however, but to the possessions of private people.

Right before night-night time.... thanks
This is what is missing from my history class in school. The teacher leave out the important bit. VOC is a company, a very succesfull company and if I'm not mistaken, the first one that offers its shares to the public. Blueprint of modern corporation.
Now corporation can only send an army of $$$, as an 'investment/debt/foreign aid'.
There's a small error right at the start in between the map and what is said: Westpapua was released into independence separately in 1961, then was invaded and occupied a year later by Indonesia. There's still some fighting for independence happening in the region together with Indonesian occupational retaliation sometimes.

it's actually pretty simple, Nusantara on that time is not based on one nation instead many small kingdoms and union, and that time many of them ate in the war of religion and believe, after the kingdom weaken the dutch get closer to some noble and some prince and make them want to take over the kingdoms, after they became puppet of the VOC(because voc help them on the war and coup d'etat) they begine to bring each kingdom to conflict on each other, if you still confused it's same like what china make in africa and us in the middle East, pretend to help one side but actually destroy both for their own gain...
There was no strongest kingdom after majapahit fallen to defend nusantara from western expedition
