Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival, celebrated annually in honour of Lord Shiva, the God of destruction. Shivratri is celebrated in every month of the luni-solar calendar, in accordance with the Hindu calendar but once a year, in late winter Maha Shivratri is celebrated to commemorate the oncoming summer. Maha Shivratri, literally translates as ‘the great night of Shiva’ and according to legend, it is on this night that Lord Shiva performs his heavenly dance or ‘tandav’ representing creation, preservation and destruction. As per many, it is also the day when Shiva and Parvati got married, thus the union of Prakriti and Purusha for the well-being of the world.

Lord Shiva carried Mata Sati’s body - for many days !! Different body parts fell at different places. In current day, there are 52 (Shakti pith) or main sites all over Indian Sub-continents where there are temples built at these sites: India has 42, Pakistan has 1, Bangladesh has 4, Sri lanka has 1, Tibet has 1 and Nepal has 2 Shakti Peeth’s.

I think you guys for first time came across story of sati and Parvati, one part it did not include is part played by Bhagwan Vishnu ji so both can meet, and also during marriage, Bhagwan vishnu ji is one who prepare Shiv ji for everyone to see him in groom dress, they way everything is written on shiv and Devi Parvati is so beautiful… and life Of Devi sati is so important. One cannot understand shiv ji with out understanding stati and Parvati story…. You guys should explore on it…❤

hi Roger and Sabine. Story pf Daksha's Yagya Destrction is the grandest event described in all 18 Puranas, Mahabharat and Ramayana also. Daksha wa son of Lord Brahma and great devotee of lord Vishnu, the teaching behind this event is that when shiva is insullted not even vishnu can protect that person as all gods were destryd and And even Lord Vishnu could not save Daksha from wratth of Shiva. Shiva in sanskrit means " the all-blissful or most auspicious. Thus event teaches that even if all gods are worshipped and Shiva is ignored person achieves nothing. As per Shiva Purana and other puranas, Shivaratri is celebrated to commemorate the appearance of Linga. There was a diispute between Lord Vishnu and Brahma as to who is superior, to resolve this diispute Shiva appeared in front of them in form of infinite pillar of fiire (or linga) and celestial voice said that whoever among Vishnu and Brahma can reach the end of that pillar will be supreme. Vishnu went downward Brahma flied upward and both of them faiiled to find its end even after thousands of years. Then both Lord Vishnu and Brahma accepted the supremaccy of Lord Shiva. This night was first celebrated as Maha Shiva Ratri and thus Shiva is worshipped in form of Linga.

When shakti self immolated herself then shiva sent veerbhadra and vadrakali and after all the destruction when shiva found out the burned body of sati ( shakti) he travelled the whole country to restore life as he knew life is the consciousness not the body so there is no impossiblity but another perspective is that shiva became too furious and kept sari body on his shoulder and started tandava dance so the whole existence started shaking so all devas and gods and beings approached narayana( vishnu) in vaikuntha. They requsted him that in this kind of situation only he can find a solution like always so narayan with his sudarshan chakra cut the dead body of sati and it ended shiva's attachment to sati. The pieces of sati which were cut by vishnu they fall into different places and came to be known as the shaktipeeths of today..

Lord Shiva is very difficult to understand because he is Lord of destruction but at the same time he is the reason of creation, he has poison in his neck but he is immortal or unborn, when he is angry he can destruct whatever he want but he is the most peaceful Lord. He is the sound from which the universe was created AUM or Om. He is the Knowledge. He is the greatest Dancer known as Nataraj, He is the greatest singer created the seven ragas (sound). After reading all vedas Adi Sankracharya wrote that all four veda just describes the Shiva itself known as "Vedsaar Shivstav"(summary of veda is to please Lord Shiva).

Shiva Parvathi marriage is in itself an entire universe.
Even Shri Vishnu himself came in line to ask for the hand of Parvathi
He embodied all the beauty nature and cosmos had and everything of value before and after time itself knew.
Parvathi said pass. Her father was super shocked.
Shiva came with all the abominations as mentioned and beyond. He could offer only two things. Water and Gold(sacred necklace 'Talli'). He said both are the only compounds, in existence, that don't get any dosha(imbalance). Parvathi was mighty impressed. Her father too eventually accepted Shiva.
Then during the festivities, there was unlimited food for all, in a sense. But one of Shivas contingent guest was a noble demon with a 1km long stomach. They kept feeding everyone and soon started to run out. Sweets, savouries, side dishes, main courses, trays, al so forth many. The Asuras stomach wasn't yet full. Once over, they reopened the kitchen and planned more and soon that too was getting over. Nothing tasty was there. Only rice. The king said, to forgive him as he fell short in tasty bites. Shiva said, no problem, feed the Asura. Give him all the remaining rice of the kingdom. Make sure his tummy was full and in accordance with that all Shivas followers and Shiva didn't eat rice that day. That's why we Don't eat Rice in Mahashivratri or even fast, so Shiva can ensure that Asura gets his full.
